.......... When he posts a link to a high profile auction, especially an expensive one, I doubt he raises the take at all. But do you all want a rule against one or the other? If so, either Thierry or Holiday to make one, or else start yet another forum where such posts are not allowed.

I so totally agree with this. especially the last part

Wow, I'm surprised that post is raising such a fuss.

This forum is not a "secret society of poster collectors." The principle of "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" applies here. The "few" of you who apparently hoped to keep that auction secret and not let the rest of us know are just being greedy.

As far as the ridiculous "kickback" allegation, that lady sent me an email about that auction to my administrator email account at moviepostercollectors.com, so I decided to pass it on to my fellow collectors.  I did glance at the listings and was planning on bidding for a few, so to some extent it's against my self-interest to mention the auction publicly, but such is life....

Does anyone think that APF members/readers are the only people who bid on Auctions?

I am attending both the Cameo auction tomorrow and the Mallam's sale on March 17th. These are not top secret events and I knew about them before they were "outed".  I welcome Mel's postings in this thread. I don't want to miss an auction I don't know about which might have something I am looking for.

On this occasion, I may face additional competition from bidders who did not previously know about the Mallam's auction. That's just my bad luck and a price I am willing to pay for being a member of an interesting and open forum. I still maintain an advantage in that I get to handle and check the condition of the posters close up (believe me, you need to do this in these provincial non-specialist UK auction houses) and I sit with maybe as few as half a dozen attendees with a direct physical link to the auctioneer during the sale, hoping that the live internet feed will stutter on the lots I am interested in.

As always, I am happy to check condition and/or bid on posters for established members so long as this does not conflict with my own objectives in the sale.

Mark

In my opinion, Mel at least doubled the likely total take for this obscure auction (I know I never heard of it before, and I might well spend 20K there now that I do know of it). When he posts a link to a high profile auction, especially an expensive one, I doubt he raises the take at all.

That perfectly contextualizes your comments in this thread for me Bruce.  You didn't do the work to find this obscure auction, but now that you know about it you might drop $20k(!), and you fully expect that Mel posting this will double the final value of the posters.  Gotcha.  Check.

Again, I maintain that posting obscure stuff like this mainly benefits people who don't do their own research -- and it disproportionately benefits those with deep pockets directly at the expense of people trying to sniff out deals on posters the might not otherwise be able to afford.  Please think twice next time Mel.  And use PMs if you are truly trying to be helpful.  5:1 guests to members, that's all I'm saying.
