First film poster auction, being held by Paddle8, and ending this Tues (Nov 24th), at 1PM, EST.

Nice selection of material, including Bond, US and foreign posters etc.

https://paddle8.com/auction/filmposters/

Fella, many thanks for this heads up.

I have never heard of Paddle8.  Has anyone here had any experiences through them?  Would love to hear.

Many thanks.

The Reservoir Dogs pictured is the reproduction.   note the cropping at the top border

Hope images of the poster they show are images of the poster being sold, else.... that is a major red flag

Looks like they (hopefully) used a cropped, stock image?  dontknow.gif

And even that isnt good, if some random stock image was used, vs. the copy they have for auction.

If they did... tisk tisk.   nono

I emailed these folks yesterday, and got a response, re the Reservoir Dogs poster, just this morning. Seems the poster is being withdrawn as there is some question about it:

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your kind message in bringing this to my attention - I actually received a similar email from someone else over the weekend so have already been looking into it.

It was consigned by a well respected dealer who confirmed they purchased the poster when the film came out. Nevertheless, it does seem to be cropped and I don't like to sell anything where doubt has been cast over it so I am withdrawing the poster from the sale.

Thanks again,
Caitlin

Posted to MOPO this morning by Morrie Everett:

"December 7-9 part 2 of the best lobby card collection ever offered at auction. Extremely low reserves. A dealer or collector's dream at profiles in History. If it was not my collection I would be bidding on more than half."

ditto   I would be shocked if it received an opening bid of $500 anyways.

They are well known amongst fine art collector. I haven't hear bad things about them... but then always TOS.

Anyone registered with them willing to share auctions results ?

If this site is primarily for fine art sales, I'm not sure I understand this logic for an industry so heavily invested in establishing clear and complete provenance.

Our Auctions

Our auctions showcase a dynamic range of collectible works — from museum-quality contemporary art and design to fine jewelry and design objects with cult followings — all vetted by experienced specialists.

We invite individual collectors to consign their works to sell at auction or via private sales to our global network of buyers. Because we value your comfort and discretion, we never disclose results or publish sales in price databases.

In addition, we partner with celebrated cultural institutions and international tastemakers on special auctions to help collectors access the extraordinary, discover new passions, and make a difference through philanthropy.

Yes, bummer.  Here is a message I just got from the film poster organizer:

Unfortunately it is Paddle8's standard policy not to publish sale results - this is one of the key reasons consignors are drawn to selling with us. It makes more sense for Fine Art - not so much with posters, but it's our policy across the board I'm afraid.

I was wracking my brain trying to figure out the angle on this odd disclosure policy.... then I put my cynic hat on and read over their statement again:

We invite individual collectors to consign their works to sell at auction or via private sales to our global network of buyers. Because we value your comfort and discretion [when preparing your income taxes], we never [leave a paper trail,] disclose results or publish sales in price databases [-- however little you choose to claim from the sale is between you and the IRS].

Something for everyone in that first part - wow.  Just a reminder that you all have a lot of Christmas shopping to do still so don't go blowing the bank on this auction ok?

(i.e. don't bid against me! ;))

Paddle 8

Well - they are crap.

I was interested in the French Dr No petite which had a starting price of $1800.  It was based in the UK.  Their 'model' has the works based at the sellers' sites and only the photos and a bit of blurb are posted up about the item.

After I decided not to bother about the poster, there was an ensuing conversation asking after the details that were just NOT forthcoming during the auction, and only really available after much pressing for information.

In their advert, they said, tape marks to all four corners, surface paper loss in the bottom right corner, linen backed with no restoration.

My questions, and their answers today, are below.

- Has it been de-acidified and bleached prior to linen-backing?
We purchased it in this state from a person who had bought it as is himself from Christies a while ago. So we cannot confirm its treatment prior to linen-backing. However the paper looks stable, with no foxing, etc and the colours are strong.

- Is it definitely backed on linen rather than paper?
It is backed on paper and then linen (as is standard).

- Is there a linen border around the poster, and if so, what size?

No - the linen has been trimmed to the poster

- Is there any actual tape residue remaining on the poster or only staining?
No, we cannot see any tape residue, just staining

- Please confirm location and dimensions of paper loss
There is paper-loss in the following margin areas:
Top left approx. 1 x 1/2 an inch
Top right approx. 1 1/2 x 1/2 an inch
Middle left approx. 2 x 1/3 inch
Middle right approx. 2 x 1/3 inch
Bottom right approx. 3 x 1/2 inch

None of this was in their blurb.  And none of it was forthcoming prior to auction, even subsequent to questioning.

I am quite frankly disgusted.  Thank God there is a Bruce in the world...

Question, is paper backing and then linen backing 'standard'?  For my part, I have never heard of this.

I feel compelled to put this in the Bad experiences column.

Cheers.

I'm thinking they mean that it was the "standard" backing practice to have a sheet of Japanese Masa paper between the poster and linen.

Coys are up to their tricks on the 1st December with a mostly Bond and a slighter Star Wars set.

They also have the Thunderball teaser quad, making two currently up for grabs in the same two week period.  HA being the other house.

Went there yesterday. Got in to see the posters (and those Gorgeous cars). Anyway. Not sure if there's much point in what they do with the posters as these are left in a corner, hardly visible. And they have just a handful. That said, i guess that it was neatly done given the limitations.

All posters were for you Sir (Bond) and Mike (Undead)  all Star Wars and James Bond.
