Ian's collection
« on: January 23, 2021, 12:29:00 AM »
Thought I'd post a couple of 'feel good movie' quads to kick things off, they make quite a pair - kind of like night and day.

Ian

Just caught "The Day The Earth Caught Fire" recently on tv - still entertaining and an interesting idea to use a real newspaper editor for one of the main roles. Always liked Janet Munro (Edward Judd was apparently a pain in the arse in real life - which comes across on film!)

Here are two 1940's Ealing Tommy Trinder movie posters and the classic Brighton Rock with Richard Attenborough as 'Pinkie Brown' from 1947.

Great collection and condition looks very good, especially for those from the 1940s. That "Brighton Rock", in particular, is a beauty.

I love Ealing movies and their posters even more.  Hard to find them in the U.S.  though.

The wartime ones are pretty rare I think?  I don't think I've seen an entire 'Champaign Charlie' before  :)

Looking around the forum recently I see many folks seem to like horror/sci-fi and Brigitte Bardot, not necessarily in the same movie  ;) - so thought I'd post some appropriate UK quads from my collection.

I like Bardot, but I'm nowhere close to being done.  I won't invade your thread with my pictures, you can see my collection on my website.

I like this La Lumière d'En Face quad.  I was going to buy it once but it wasn't in the condition I like my stuff in, so I passed.  One day I hope.

I really love Horror UK Quad !

According to my tastes, Some are really sublime compared to their US counterparts (like your "the day the earth caught fire" Quad and the Thames)...
But some, clearly not (Man with the X-Rays Eyes) but maybe is it dayglo?

Anthony,

Yes the man with the x ray eyes really stands (pops) out, I was thinking it could be backlit but I don't have that kind of display. Maybe others could comment on that, I don't know if it is 'day glow'. I have acquired mainly quads as I used to live in the UK (Ealing) in the late 80's as these kind of posters could be had relatively cheaply back then. The 'horror' quads, especially Hammer, have always been at a premium but nothing like the prices today.

Ian

Yes, your Man with X Ray Eyes quad is day-glo, as that was a common feature on sci-fi/horror posters of that era in the U.K.  I share your love of quads, especially the ones from earlier period.  And of course the Hammer ones with artwork by Tom Chantrell are particularly cool.  I also have that Flesh for Frankenstein quad that you posted, I think that’s a good example of what Anthony was saying re: how they’re often quite different and sometimes better than the US posters.
