Edge Enhancement Free Or Recommended
« on: September 15, 2010, 03:00:15 PM »
Hey,
Would like to know if any members have came across any DVD`s that have minimal EE or even better none at all ?
Maybe we could get a Master list posted here?

Stew

Ps to kick this off,i loved the DVD of Full Metal Jacket, looked great on my basic setup,

Maybe you could start off by explaining what "Edge Enhancement" is?

I am presuming you are concerned Stew because you are using a projector?

Edge Enhancement is a technique used to artificially "sharpen" a Dvd image.
If your watching on a normal size TV you prob wont notice it but as soon as you start to go big screen it becomes more noticable.
Now that ive mentioned it you might find some of your movies annoying to watch.

For more info read this article..

Unfortunately, I've watched a lot of annoying movies and it had nothing do to with the presence or lack of edge enhancement ;)

I have never noticed it.  I use an upconverting player, so maybe that has something to do with it.  Either way, it sounds like a gimmick to me.

Thanks.  You know what you did.

No, but your DVD player or Receiver might have it.  I am pretty sure both of mine do.

Thanks i will look out for one, none of mine have this option, it sounds like it is just another software tweek as the EE is embedded on the disc.

I've never had this problem either, is it just Front projection t.v.'s as I have never had one of those, as the picture is rubbish anyway. I have been useing a Panasonic plasma t.v. with a blu-ray player. And a full H.D. Infocus Projector with a blu-ray player for quite some time. The picture on both set ups is first rate, with no problems at all.

Edge Enhancement is present on most DVD`s,however it isnt really noticable until you use a projector and have a large image,
If your using a TV its not so much of an issue although it is present.
Blue-Ray transfers dont need EE.

Well I project on to 10 foot screen, and play standard dvd's as well as Blu-ray and have no problems. Even my old non H.D. projector never give this problem, and I'm very fussy about picture quality?

A two second search on Google will provide all the info you need on EE.
Im trying to start a list of DVD`s that dont have excessive EE

Well we can safely begin with James Camerons Titanic, zero EE and excellent transfer. So thats us started,i`d like to recommend Full Metal Jacket from the Kubrick collection, barely noticable, great transfer , yet The Shining DVD was awful i thought.

No i didn`t.. i will have to look about for some info on the image quality of those releases, Hopefully one will be better than the release i have, its amazing that the film still warrants 3 different versions.
