William Boyd aka Hopalong Cassidy
« on: June 05, 2020, 05:50:41 PM »
William Boyd was born 125 years ago today.  He was wise enough to buy the rights to all of his Hopalong Cassidy movies after his movie career had ended.  Guess what?  Television audiences ate up old Hoppy and cowboy movies! The 2008 book Hopalong Cassidy: An American Legend coauthored by Boyd's wife, Grace, and Russ Cochran's brother, Michael, is very good.  Here's the 1938 one sheet for Heart of Arizona for which I need to get a frame very soon!  Anyone else have William Boyd posters to share?  Okie

Nice poster. I never saw a Hopalong Cassidy movie....I was never a fan of westerns. HOWEVER, Hopalong Cassidy was (still is?) the "mascot" (or whatever) for Producers Dairy,  a local business. I'm not sure if the dairy still uses HC on the cartons (I don't drink milk), but for years (all while I was growing up), the milk was labeled as being "Hoppy's favorite." A quick look at their website reveals that Hopalong/Boyd signed the deal for this back in 1956.

How many Hopalong Cassidy movies were there?

Apparently, Hoppy has been replaced by cows. I just looked it up. Oh well...

Hi Monster!  Just last year I found some unused Hoppy milk cartons like you mentioned at a roadside flea market in Louisiana.  It's listed that there were 66 Hopalong Cassidy movies along with TV and radio shows.   Boyd made a great living on the merchandising rights as well as syndication and rerelease of his movies.  It's "never" too late to enjoy a Hoppy movie, my friend! Okie

Or a glass of milk...with or without Hopalong Cassidy on the carton. Ha!  (I guess he was even on the old glass bottle milk containers, too. Those might be worth tracking down if Hoppy is your favorite...).

Cheers!

When I was a kid, Monster, our milk, cottage cheese etc. were still delivered that way on our front porch by the milkman.  Okie
