Facebook, Instagram and YouTube - how to embed in a post
« on: May 22, 2020, 10:39:36 AM »
Hi all,

As there is some nice poster content on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, I have installed a mod to make showing this content a bit easier - it's called Simple Audio Video Embedder (SAVE)

To embed an Instagram post (image or video) or a YouTube video, simply copy and paste the URL into your post. When clicking 'Post', the mod should add the code automatically to embed.

To embed a Facebook post, you need to click the timestamp in the post (highlighted in yellow in the screenshot below), then Facebook will refresh and show you the post. You can then copy and paste the URL from that window and the mod should automatically embed. Facebook video URLs should work fine as a direct copy and paste. If the post is from a 'closed' or 'private' group, it won't embed, you'd need to re-post publicly and then embed that post.

Please let me know if you see any weird behaviour or hate it.

Feel free to use this thread to test!

For example:

Rich has started a nice Instagram page...if I want to share this post on Frank, I copy and paste the URL and it should show his post below...

Anyway, give it a try and let me know what you think. If folk hate it, we can remove it.

If anyone can figure out how it works with Facebook, they'll get a gold star...

Awesome tool, Tob, thanks.

I unfortunately do not post my posters anywhere on social media (just on my website), but thank you for making it so convenient.

Thanks Jason and T, glad you think it can be useful.

Steve, gold star to you! Well done.

I'll try again...

Ok, looks like public videos are ok...a shame public photos/posts don't seem to work.

Steve - I went to reply to your message to say "yes, it was a bit nerve wracking adding a mod, but I backed up the site first and the installation process is pretty simple (it does some simple validation tests for you to give you some confidence before you click the install button)", but instead of quote, I hit the 'Remove' post button by accident!

So apologies for deleting your post (image of post above...I don't think there's a way to undelete) and yes, you're certainly correct that you need to be careful, as I demonstrated with a heavy finger just there, hehe!

Regarding the settings - I did have that Facebook Photos tickbox ticked, I'm curious as to why it isn't working now...

Ok, I think I've figured it out - you can't just copy and paste the URL, you need to click the little timestamp on the post first (screenshot below), then when Facebook refreshes and takes you to that post, the format of the URL changes and you can copy and paste that into the post here. I'll update the first post with some instructions

How do we know which thread is private and public?  I don't see any indication.
Crucifixion? Good. Out of the door, line on the left, one cross each.

The threads on here? They're all public to members.

Facebook posts have different privacy levels though - for example, if I try and share a post from a closed Facebook group, I don't think that will work. There is a small globe icon under a post title on Facebook, if you hover over that, it'll tell you who can see it (e.g. public, private, members of group XYZ)

Compare side by side the forum home page in different browsers (eg Chrome and Edge) one logged into APF the other not logged in, to see the difference
