Breakfast at Tifanny's: Different designs or fake?
« on: February 27, 2019, 09:07:43 AM »
Hi,

Surfing on Ebay, I saw this Breakfast at Tiffany's poster:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vtg-Movie-Poster-Breakfast-at-Tiffanys-1961-Audrey-Hepburn-Framed-Original/352425501618?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3D0a4c97eeeec6498291c0b5ec1c0f0bdb%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D181580691531%26itm%3D352425501618&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3Aa717fb03-3a97-11e9-b075-74dbd180b605%7Cparentrq%3A2f3f2b6b1690ab6b23933b13ffe3d565%7Ciid%3A1

The owner claims it to be original, but you can notice some obvious differences with other originals: The cat's tail is pointing up, the background buildings are gray color, missing text in the yellow box...

Here an original from www.cinemasterpieces.com:

Is it a fake/reproduction or there are different original designs of this poster?

Thank you in advance.

I think the seller means 'original' as in an original piece of art (painted by hand), as oppose to an original movie poster.

In the item description you can read:

Quote
Original on hard poster board. It’s a very rare item. If you’re a collector, this is just for you. One of a kind!
Probably not many originals left out there.
[...]
You can see the raised paint on this original.

Artist proof or prototype for posters to be reproduced for the theaters.

Does it make any sense for you?

The seller is saying this is an original painting. I don't believe it's an Artist Proof or Prototype though. The BaT art is by Robert Mcginnis. If this was a real painting by him, it would be selling for a lot more than $1500.

It also would not have the text on it.

Regardless of that poster on ebay, my question is:

Is there any original poster of Breakfast at Tiffany's with those characteristics?:
- Pointing up cat tail
- Gray background buildings
- No text over the yellow box

Even the title font "painting" looks wobbly and uneven. Something that someone likely painted in their basement or Art 101 poster painting class.

It may be a one of a kind (and if hand painted, then that fact is probably true)... but not a $1500.00 one of a kind.

But my question is still unanswered.

I have seen more of them over there. It is weird for me because those differences are very obvious to be always a fake

As one reference.

Here are 28 US OS copies sold via emp over the years. None have art with the cat's tail in the air:

http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/film_title/BREAKFAST%2520AT%2520TIFFANY%2527S%2520%2528%252761%2529/tag/nation%253AU.S./tag/xtype%253Aone-sheet/tag/extra%253Afirst/archive.html

The "redesign" shown on the ebay ad might have been that artist simply wanting to "change up" the art very slightly, too, to make it more his/her own rendition. (just a guess, of course).

Thank you for the references, Erik.

But it is really strange that design is soooo common (you can buy reprints with that design even in Amazon)... It has to be an original one with it!

Is it possible the design was changed for any other country?
In example, there is a "Muñequita de lujo" from Argentina with a different design:

Take a look to this: This is a website that sells reproductions from vintage movie posters. They call it "Style B"

the seller is trying to say in some way that this is the original painting and insinuating it is by McGinnis. Because he never really says "this is the original painting by robert mcginnis used to print the famous poster" he isn't doing anything wrong that ebay would delete the listing. He wants the buyer to 'think' on his own that this is a real piece.

look at original comic art & other paintings categories and yuo see this over and over. "Peanuts art signed schulz" but doesn't actually say 'it's by Charles Schulz who did the strip for 50 years"

another scammer

Wow the foxing on that “fan art” is sooo bad. At first glance I thought it was part of the composition. 😂

I think the one on ebay isnt even hand painted is the one from moviepostershop.

The eBay poster image also looks very pixilated. But the frame is crisp and sharp.

Yea good spotting, her black dress against her leg looks weirdly pixelated whereas the edge of the black frame near it, not.

I'm not sure that's pixels. It looks more like the texture of the canvas or whatever it's been painted on to me.

This is probably in the top ten of worst posters you could buy on ebay at this current time lol.

I am sure it is the $10 commercial print on paper or canvas and the foxing (black spots) is soo bad it should stay outside now and not the damp basement it came from. Ha ha.
I asked the seller for more pictures the other day and did not get a response. Anyone else inquire?

Anyway, I'm not interested on that ebay item at all. It was just an example to ask you for that "alternative" design with the cat with pointing up tail.
That design is really common on reprints, and I wondered where it came from.
