Belgian Authentication
« on: February 05, 2019, 02:20:40 PM »
Hi...new member here, thanks to Jeff for adding me.  I have been collecting (lightly) for years, usually pieces from movies I love rather than for value.  I have recently been gathering all of my Belgian posters in one place and had read the AFP article on a fake Belgian Forbidden Planet.  This got me wondering about the  Belgian I Was A Teenage Frankenstein I picked up for next to nothing.  Are there ways to tell if Belgians are reprints other than the "Printed in Belgium" type?  I understand they reprinted some of these in the 70's...is there a list of common reprints to watch out for?

Also on the subject of Belgian posters...I understand the true size to be 14 x 22 inches...but I see these get slightly smaller on occasion.  Does this mean they have been trimmed for certain, or are there actual slight size variances?  Is a trimmed poster worth significantly less than an untrimmed poster?  What about the theater name at the top or residue from the name being pasted on or removed...I'm sure not having this would be the way to go, but does it totally devalue the poster?

I'm very glad I came across APF and I can't believe how much I've already learned...thanks for the help!

emp has auctioned 14 never folded copies of the same Belgian IWATF, and all look to be identical to yours in size, and printed border info. I'd be willing to wager yours is also 100% legit.

Hi there

Read my answer here, it summarize elements discussed in few places online -https://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,11839.msg239069.html#msg239069
Still waiting an answer so that people can share their thoughts.

To cut it short, conclusion is that some people know very well who is behind this - Georges Coune is the guy it seems; he used to sell plenty in the 70s/80s.   They are reprint  in my opinion but traders who bought them hoping to resell them as first printing did everything they could to have them "officialised"...  I think the correct term should something like "original vintage reprint"?  The usual applies, "If deal is too good, then it's a fake"

Mind sharing link of AFP article on a fake Belgian Forbidden Planet.
