My Consignment Journey at emovieposter.com
« on: January 09, 2019, 08:36:17 PM »
Hi all!

Thought I'd document here my consignment experience w/ EMP as it goes along so you can experience it w/ me.

Last fall, I started to finally tackle the posters I've been accumulating over the years and getting them stored in the flat file cabinets I bought a few years back.  In doing so, I realized I have way too many posters that will never see the walls or light of day.  Most of my posters were still in tubes or packages from EMP or HA or ebay and hadn't even been opened, so I decided once I opened everything it was time to start thinning the herd.

I live in Madison, WI, so none of the major dealers are really close, but my folks live in Little Rock so when we looked at visiting over Christmas I decided I'd load some of my excess stock in the back of the minivan and make a stop in West Plains.

Emailed Bruce and asked if it was OK to just drop stuff off----he replied Yes, people do it all the time, so I said OK, let's do it.  Told him about when I'd arrive and despite having two kids in van on way down, made it approximately on time.

Now the stuff I'm consigning isn't my best stuff (and my best stuff is probably a lot of people's trash), but there's some decent things in there---Scarlett Johanssen Lost in translation probably being the best I included, but some recent posters, and who knows maybe a folded one or two that may bring a decent amount.  Most in pretty nice shape I believe.  Probably 150-200 in total that I expect may take a year or so to fully auction off.

Anyways, Bruce and Clark met me outside and helped me unload the tubes and things from my van.  Got to shake Bruce's hand and shoot the breeze for a bit.  Told him how I'd been bidding with him since his eBay days.  Bruce was dressed in a blue hoodie and bore a remarkable resemblance to Bill Belichik in my eyes (that's not a dis---I like Bill). Super friendly and told me what to expect.

So, my first auctions ends next Tuesday---some of the items that were already flattened, so if they're ready, they go if they're the type for that auction.

Get the email the next day after they're listed:

Your current 5 items are:
3f001 CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND Hungarian 16x23 1981 different Tibor Helenyi art, rare!
3f032 PIRANHA Turkish 1981 Roger Corman, great art of man-eating fish & sexy girl by Over!
3f396 BLUES BROTHERS Polish 27x37 1983 really cool close up different artwork by Leszek & Jadwiga!
3f533 DEPARTED advance Japanese 29x41 2006 Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Martin Scorsese!
3f759 KUNG FU HUSTLE French 16x21 2005 Stephen Chow, kung-fu comedy, Siu-Lung Leung as The Beast!

All but the last one were posters I purchased from Bruce previously, so more than likely gonna lose $ there unless they sell for way more than I paid, but $'s not really the point for me---just need the space and restored sanity.  It was a bit curious to see the Blues Brothers rated as Good to very Good, considering I purchased it in Very Good to Fine condition and honestly didn't remove it from its original shipping tube until a few months ago.  Piranha was also differently graded, as it's now Very Good vs. the Very Good to Fine I purchased in.  I try not to purchase posters at Bruce's in under Very Good condition, but sometimes you have to.

We'll see---I know condition is subjective, but hoping not too many more end up listed in a lesser condition than which I purchased them in.

So that's the story thus far, and we'll see how it goes.  Thanks for the read.
-Brian

Thanks Matt---please bid away!

I should clarify my post---The Piranha is indeed graded the same as I bought it.  I mixed that up w/ the Departed.  Both are indeed the exact same grade as purchased from Bruce.  Apologies for the error on my part.

EMP contacted me about the Blues Brothers in fact----the original condition was misgraded---as graded now, it's accurate.  Bruce has offered to make up the difference if the poster doesn't sell for as much as I purchased it originally.  I think this is top-notch on his end and is much appreciated.

Interesting story, I'm after that Blues Brothers so will probably be bidding on it. Is it in the auctions due to end next week - Tue's work of movie posters. There are quite a few Polish and Czech stuff I will be bidding no but not quite had a proper look yet.

Just a question. Did Bruce say why he is only listing 5 in one auction if you dropped of over 200 posters?  Is that what he does then list them over a year rather than in a few auctions?

I am thinking of dong the same as you. I have a lot of posters I bought from Bruce over the years that I will probably never do anything with and I need to slim down my collection too. I only really forget Polish, Czech, Japanese and UK quad posters these days so really I could probably do with getting rid of all the others bar a few personal favourites that I may like to keep to possibly display one day.

Good luck! I’ve consigned to EMP a few times and it has always worked out well.

To answer the question above, the posters will be slotted in when there are suitable auctions. So if you have a mix of rolled, oversize, flat, international, etc. they will be put in with the same kind of items. Obviously this will take a different amount of time depending on what you consign.

As Rumble stated, they'll be slotted in when they do a suitably-themed auction.  Another reason for taking awhile is that rolled posters need to be flattened for the most part---most of mine weren't.  So a few months of heavy weight before those see the light of day.

Some for the Thursday (1/17) auction as well:
3g664 CASINO ROYALE advance 1sh 2006 Daniel Craig as James Bond & sexy Eva Green!
3g692 DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL Kilian 1sh R1994 classic art of Gort holding Patricia Neal!
3g771 HOT PURSUIT 1sh 1987 art of sexy girl looking at John Cusack through binoculars by Struzan!
3g813 LABYRINTH teaser 1sh 1986 Jim Henson, art of David Bowie & Jennifer Connelly by Chorney!
3g889 SCHINDLER'S LIST int'l DS 1sh 1993 Steven Spielberg World War II classic, Best Picture!
3g940 SWINGING BARMAIDS 1sh 1975 x-rated, The Swinging Barmaids, art by John Solie!
3g980 WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT style C Kilian 1sh 1988 Robert Zemeckis, great art of Roger by Stedry!

Why would rolled posters need to be flattened for "months" before being made available to auction? That makes no sense to me. Heavy magnets in order to hold a poster flat, while being photographed should be all that's needed. And once the pic is taken, the posters can be re-rolled, tubed, (not sealed, in case someone is the winner of more than one from your lot), and ID'd for easy mailing.

Bruce is the best.  I’m not a seller, but I had a few extra wildlings that I decided to send to him instead of trashing them.  I thought I would at least break even with shipping, since the posters didn’t cost me anything.  I was very pleased with the result.  It took a while to put them in the right sale, but I’m in no rush.  I will do it again.

One thing I would say, though, is that sometimes it’s better to do a direct sale with forum members.  No fees and some of us buy a lot of stuff.  I have bought posters from forum members at Emovie for $500 that I would have gladly paid $500 to said forum members.  Something to think about.

Its more than just the one photoshoot Jeff, those posters are rolled/unrolled a couple of times, for example when folks use pay and hold (which is the only way I can afford to buy from EMP) and add more posters to their order.

Its much easier dealing with a poster that's been flattened. Some people send Bruce 50 posters in a single roll, that all want to curl on you from both ends at the same time, its difficult and a huge pain in he ass to manage, and that's how corners and edges get dinged and a customer gets a "good" poster instead of the "very good" one he purchased.  Taking the oomph out of the natural paper fibers by flattening them makes everyone's life a lot easier.   thumbsup.gif

My point was that even a rolled poster only needs to carefully unrolled once, attached to the photographic table and then carefully re-rolled and stored (to prevent those edge dings and crimps).

I cant imagine that emp or any other auction house handles any of their consigned posters any more than is absolutely necessary, especially older posters that can be more delicate or fragile.
