Could this be the first million dollar movie poster????
« on: October 11, 2018, 08:20:25 PM »
If any movie poster is going to break records, the original OS for The Mummy is a good contender, as this stone litho is definitely the best of all the classic Universal horror paper.  I especially like that this particular copy is folded and has not been backed.  Curious to see what the results will be.

Todd already tried that with the Bride teaser. Maybe Sotheby’s agreed to a million dollar reserve?

Wow! Beautiful copy! I wonder where it's been hidden for all these years. It will go high for sure but I thought the Frankenstein 6-sheet would be the first movie poster to break the $1 million dollar ceiling?

Always felt the Bride teaser was really just an ad for the overall Auction with no real intention of a sale...

Could be the same thought behind placing this one here, too?

It's been hiding in plain sight (Todd has offered it on ebay several times).
Frankenstein 6-sheet would have to be offered for sale before it could break a million, but there has already been a million dollar private sale.

And he always had GREAT multiple close up shots (in the years before he started using that total, watermark overlay, that is).

It's a single lot auction, so not really promoting any group sale.

Speaking of the Frankenstein 6-sheet, I believe it will be publicly displayed at the Morgan Library museum in their upcoming "It's Alive: Frankenstein at 200" exhibit that opens tomorrow.  I'm planning on going in the coming days and will report back on this.

Not sure how much of a "frenzy" there will be for a poster opening at $950,000 and also having a reserve.

Ben, if the Frankenstein poster isn't on display at the museum you can always call Metropolis directly and go to their offices to see it (should probably do that anyways so you can see a King Kong 6-sheet, Dracula 1-sheet, Invisible Man advance and their other fantastic goodies)

it's hard to imagine that the Mummy poster will actually get much interest from those who could actually afford to buy it.
It's been for sale repeatedly for 10 years, or more privately.

starting at $950k means there will be no bidding war, because anyone who wanted to buy it could have already at that level.

It's a great poster, but the market at that price point is very small, if not downright invisible

Today I stopped by Sotheby's to check out The Mummy OS that's currently up for auction there.  I also went to the Morgan Library Museum to see the Frankenstein 6-sheet that's part of the "Frankenstein at 200" show (a great exhibit by the way).  Both are quite spectacular in person: the Mummy's colors are truly outstanding, while the sheer scale of the Frankenstein poster is really impressive.  Apologies for all the glare on the Mummy pics, the poster was actually no longer on public display when I went there, so I had to ask for it to be taken out of storage.  As a result, the lighting condition in the room were pretty terrible when I took the pics.

Only 8 days left to get your bid in on this poster before it goes back to ebay.

I noticed it was in the same frame at Sothebys as it's always been displayed in, when on ebay, too.

It looks like The Mummy poster is humbly sitting on the floor on some styrofoam pieces.  Couldn't they have at least found an extra copy of the Book of the Dead to set it upon?
