Long article today in NYTimes:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/08/arts/blade-runner-2049-ryan-gosling-harrison-ford-ridley-scott-denis-villeneuve.html

Ridley Scott, director of the original, says "the whole premise of this new plot is based on the fact that [Deckard]’s a replicant...."

Early reviews look really encouraging. I'm hopefully going to go see it on Thursday.

I'm sure he is... and I quite agree.

They look like they were phoned in from some computer nerd who knows photoshop (and how to oversaturate color and hue with the push of a button or 2).

It's the way of the modern poster, unfortunately. (imho only, of course).

Yes, they're not very inspired to say the least, but they work.  John Alvins style would not sell today, pretty much like Struzans style, while great, is passe and not commercial enough.

For what they are, those two posters are intriguing enough and will bring folks in, which at the end of the day, is their sole purpose.

Saw BR2049 today.

Just a few notes.

First, it is a "pure" very serious sci-fi movie. That will greatly limit its mass appeal.

Second, it is very complex and difficult to follow. I had to read the Wikipedia plot summary and these articles to alleviate my confusion:

https://www.theguardian.com/film/filmblog/2017/oct/05/blade-runner-2049-does-it-live-up-to-the-critical-hype-discuss-with-spoilers

http://ew.com/movies/2017/10/08/blade-runner-2049-ending-explained/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_Runner_2049

Third, the scenes with Joi, K's computer hologram sorta-girlfriend, are by far the best in the movie IMO. Unfortunately, I can't find a pic of the terrific special effects when "she" physically and mentally merges with others. Something totally fresh and new under the sun!

Fourth, it is really BR2049 PART 1. I was very surprised by the abrupt ending!

Saw BR2 again, liked it better bc I understood what was going on. Too bad it was a $$$ dissapointment....

Anyways that's not why I'm posting. The theaters lobby and halls were covered with classic giant repro posters:

Hey, that's not an official MP!

Like the first one.   And 20 years from today, it will be hailed as a masterpiece.

Unlike BR1, it's garnered immediate high praise:

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 88% based on 312 reviews, with an average rating of 8.2/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Visually stunning and narratively satisfying, Blade Runner 2049 deepens and expands its predecessor's story while standing as an impressive filmmaking achievement in its own right." Metacritic, another review aggregator, assigned the film a weighted average score of 81 out of 100, based on 51 critics, indicating "universal acclaim". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A–" on an A+ to F scale.

*****

Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Jeff Goldstein told Reuters that “Blade Runner 2049” in particular underperformed in mid-sized and smaller markets, blaming the films near three-hour running time and competition from the baseball playoffs for keeping people away.

“We did well in the major and high-profile markets,” he also shared. “Alcon [Entertainment] and Denis made an amazing movie. The audience for it was narrower than we anticipated.”

To go back to what I wrote yesterday, as revered as “Blade Runner” is, it was never on the level of “Star Wars” in terms of pop culture currency, so it shouldn’t be all that surprising that the fanbase for ‘2049’ was limited. Again, kudos to Warner Bros., Alcon, and Sony for making the movie but this was never meant to be a four-quadrant hit. From a business perspective, one wonders if the decision to try and make a blockbuster out of a property that was never more than a cult favorite was a bit misguided.

I think Blade Runner has a solid chance at the following Oscar nominations, and could honestly walk away with at least the first three.
Best Cinematography
Best Production Design
Best Visual Effects
Best Sound Editing
Best Sound Mixing
