Protecting Your Posters (& Other Collectibles)
« on: August 07, 2018, 09:52:02 PM »
A good article from HA's magazine, The Intelligent Collector, discussing technology that makes it easier to protect your collections in the home. And also pointing out a good fact that the better the protection, the better one's insurance company feels, too.

Good article, Erik but I'm not sure how much it would help with movie poster collections. I guess if I had a CASABLANCA 6-sheet framed on the wall, I would certainly want to protect it as best as I could. But then, no security system is 100% foolproof. The vaults shown in the article are not so different from rifle and gun vaults. That would work if one had a lot of valuable folded posters and lobby cards. I know of one collector who keeps nothing stored in his house; he keeps it all in a locked self storage unit several towns away from where he lives.

I live in a house I bought a few years ago from a guy who was quite the gun collector.  On the second floor is a "closet" that is actually a fire-proof gun safe.  It has a steel door and steel thick walls with 45 minutes of fire protection.  And the steel door has a lock so it comes with that security feature as well.  I have thought about putting lobby cards and folded posters in this "closet" but have hesitated due to moisture concerns.  I know with safes you need moisture control, and I assume that this area upstairs would also trap moisture on the inside.  And it would not take much moisture to damage the paper of lobby cards and posters.

Hi Matt,  I recommend not worrying so much about security, and concentrate on insurance, especially if you are like me and consider your collection not only fun, though with prices nowadays also an asset. I have Collectibles Insurance https://collectinsure.com.  With the hurricanes we have, I have to be willing to walk away.  I know with a lifetime of collecting I am not willing to just eat the loss if I don't have to do so.  Just a thought on my strategy.  Okie

Also make sure to have a good detailed inventory of what you actually own! It will be invaluable if you ever have to use the insurance, knock on wood...

Insurance and a well built safe room, with separate ventilation system. I built this for a client one time and it turned out to be amazing.

I will definitely read all the info in those links lol, I’m under insured on the poster and collectibles...ugh.
