Early Foreign Horror Posters from Universal or Any Studio

Hey okie,

in your looking and searching for various UNI horror posters, have you ever come across (or seen) an original release Argentine poster for either the US or Spanish language version of Dracula?

There's a duo tone (blue and white) image from the Spanish language version, but Ive always wondered if it might be from a later RR, as the art and layout are not very detailed/original (let alone its lacking in any color aside from blue).

What do you think?

Hi Jeff, I've only known of the duotone for the Spanish Dracula you pictured.  It has the same "Universal Pictures Corp. of Argentina" (like Matias, I believe, also has discussed some before) that is on the early Universal Horror color posters from Argentina.  I would think the duotone Dracula is either a first release or very early rerelease before the Universal credit line changed. Historically, thank goodness that Spanish Dracula Argentinean poster survived as so little has turned up for that film.  Okie

With the wonderful poster art that came out of Argentina during that time, one would think they would have done a better job with this one (especially if it is a first release).

Now to try and track down a first release Argentinean poster for Lugosi's Dracula

Hi Jeff, I would not expect there would be an original release Lugosi poster from Spanish speaking countries, rather only the Villarias/Tovar version back then. Though, like my momma always used to say, "Anything is possible, but not always probable."  Okie

Yep, that Dracula is most probably a first release. The "Universal pictures corp of Argentina" was not used in Universal 40s posters, and the wording in the tagline "Drama sombrio, siniestro y subyugante" sounds very thirties... It's a great looking poster in person

The Lugosi version was never released down here. They used him for newspaper ads though

Matias, Have you seen records of the early 1930s Universal Horror movies being rereleased in the later 1930s in Argentina?  Okie

No, I haven't. The only Universal Horror rerelease I can recall is one for Frankenstein, in the 60s/70s

You and me, both, okie.

And just like the Arg RR for The Mummy, the Belgians also got the main image wrong on their 1950s RR poster for Frankenstein.  (But the Belgians did a better job on the art, even if they used the wrong Frankie  ).
