Once upon a time in the west uncut quad poster
« on: February 09, 2018, 03:52:09 PM »
Hi
Has anybody seen this one before
I tried to search for quite a while no results
It came out of small Irish cinema and was supposed to be used around 1970 or 1971?

Nice looking poster, Bernd.

Have you had this poster a while? Was this a flea market find? Ebay? Other?

Hi Jeff
I took over a whole collection from cinema here in west of Ireland about 6 months ago
But this one among other ones from 70s I found only 4 weeks ago when doing some little job at back room...had to pay a bit extra but turned out to be a good deal for me nevertheless...

According to imdb, OUATITW opened in Ireland on February 6, 1970, but doesnt show any later re-release year in the '70s, if there was one.

Very strange that nobody else seems to own this poster ...cannot believe it was only printed for Irish market...
But than again who knows...
Some other questions I have about 2 other posters I found

I suppose I will do another thread about those tomorrow...

Bernd, in looking closely at the full image you uploaded, I dont seem to find any printer's info along any of the borders. Is anything there in very fine print that I'm not seeing?

If there's none, that seems a bit interesting, too.

You are right Jeff
There isn’t anything about printer...
That would help yes but is that not often the case?
That printer is not mentioned I mean....

Might just have been a little more info to know where it was printed. Is the UK size quad a standard size used in Ireland, too?

Yes they are identical...in size.  30 by 40 inches and motif
But interestingly I have a quad poster of Ireland’s Neill Jordan’s first movie Angel that differs completely from very common British quad similar scenario....
I have quite a few Irish censored ones that have black marker covering flesh in various places ...
Impossible to remove unfortunately funny but sad...

Nothing like a little "indelible censoring" to make sure what was covered stays covered.

It seems the only way to get more info is to contact somebody in the Irish film institute
Apparently they have an archive with all posters ever used in Ireland .But does all mean all?
I will have to try to find out...
If poster is very valuable I will have to sell it ...any idea where I should try
Should I get it restored and linen backed I wonder...?!

Hello,

Did you find any Gene Tierney posters in that collection? I know of a couple of Gene posters in a cinema collection that came from Ireland. It might be the one you have.

Thanks
Marc

I think this Once Upon a Time in the West is a re-release. There is a first time showing the original uncut version in the top right. The film was rated A on its UK release, now what we'd call a PG, mainly due to the BBFC editing a bed scene.

This uncut version must be a later date although I cannot put a confirmed date on it. Definitely has the look of a 70s poster though IMO.

Sorry no tierney posters...
Again I just find it odd that nobody else has another one...usually it is the re-release ones of big titles that are much more common
I cannot think of a single case where it is not the case??,
Maybe I am wrong
The likelihood of this one being a version just for Irish market I considered very slim!
There must be at least one more somewhere...

There’s definitely more about. I did a quick search on the net and found the same poster on a poster
website.

I contacted Mr Grey from heritage
He just said it is most likely a re-issue quad from eighties with little value
The poster I was stored in shelf together with other ones all from early 70s,the condition points to that too.In Ireland nearly all posters were used several times in different cinemas until 1979 roughly
The majority ones from 1980 are therefore in much better condition.
I have been told in some cases the poster travelled with the reel and some movies only between 1 and 5 copies were produced because of the immense cost of 35mm
I have worked part time in the local cinema for more than thirty years doing technical assistance ,maintenance work repairs etc so know a bit about that side but interest in posters came only a few years ago....

This poster is a re-release from the late 70's, the original was full colour, and had an A cert. This one was put out as a AA, uncut. Yes it will 0f had a much smaller release, but was across the UK, not just Ireland. and depending on where it was used in Ireland, it would of had the cert blacked out, so the poster was a general one. there are a few about, but mostly people want the full colour version..

 Hi PAUL
Thanks for your reply
I am a bit confused ...
A local (Irish) cinema owner has told me that this poster was used in Ireland for first showing here 1970 and 1971 he says he remembers  it???
Where did you get your information?
I contacted several poster sellers in U.K.
Nobody has ever seen it?
Didn’t UK posters from late 70s not have a reference to printer in most cases?
This one has none!

Where did you see one in UK?
Only one I know of is in Dublin(Adelphiposters)

I personally find the coloured version much more boring
But who cares....

There's usually (as a rule of thumb), only printers credits on first release posters, A re-release wouldn't on a lot of occasions have it. The projectionist may be misremembering when it was shown, they do show a lot of films..

we know due to the cert it was a later release, when certain scenes were reinstated, and was awarded a higher cert.

There has been a few about, but I could give you any number of posters, and you won't find any now, people are hanging on to them. This don't mean they were printed in any less numbers..

If you want to sell it, at it's true value, either send it to Bruce, and let him auction it, or put it on the Bay with a stating bid of £1, and see where it goes...
It's more than a Hobby...

Thanks for info about printers ,didn’t realise that
Fortunately I don’t have to sell it ...I have set up my own website but have to list posters still
Website is active but only has sons samples for trial
I have chosen about 450 from the ones I own (app 5000 a lot of them 1990s to now and old damaged ones...)
That will take me some time...
I have sold a good few posters on the bay (bought a lot more....)but my most expensive ones I sold straight to dealers and individuals all in U.K...
It is still only a hobby for me...no pressure..thank God
Some of my favourite posters are ones I bought for less than 10 Euro (Claude Chabrol titles...,a lot of Italian 2p ones )
