Excited for the film, but the poster is odd...why is his right leg so long? I’ve heard a rumour that Struzan is working on a one sheet for it, so I’ll wait for that I think.

Great video interview of author Ernest Cline:
- took 6-7 years to write book
- can't believe Spielberg is making movie
- made 100s of references to particular pop culture intellectual property things (Atari, movie characters, Tv shows) in his book and was surprised everybody wanted their IP in the movie bc of Spielberg
- Spielberg was the king of 80s movies and did not want to focus on his own movies in RP1 but the writers convinced him otherwise
- Is writing a sequel book

Video is balky but eventually works.

I enjoyed the book, but I don't know how well this will play outside people who didn't grow up in the Eighties.

I guess the timing is right with the popularity of Stranger Things, It and the Twin Peaks revival.

Read the book while stuck in hospital.  My kids saw the film on Sunday.
I thought the book was a reasonably good SciFi action book with good character development and a nice 80s nostalgia vibe.  The kids tell me the movie drifts significantly away from the book, but is good in its own right.  I'll give it a shot when it becomes downloadable.

Saw it today! In Imax 3D! A+ all the way, insane special effects, non-stop rollercoaster fun, great real-life acting and life lessons (enjoy "real life" vs. online).

It really reminds me of the early 1980s, when I'd play "intense non-violent" arcade games for 2-3 hours. I "aced" Galaga, could play for 30+ minutes for a quarter.

http://arcadegamesclassic.net/galaga/

And I also found the secret room in Adventure, as in RP1:

Also got an A- Cinescore, very good.

Too bad 'bout hospital sojourn :(

BTW Ernest Kline co-wrote the screenplay so obviously OK with "drift."

Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One improves immensely on the book

Ernest Cline’s fast-moving novel was a treasure trove for pop-culture junkies, but the endless references work better on the screen

The book covered in detail that Wade spent FIVE YEARS obsessively researching/reviewing 80s culture, ex. watching EVERY episode of every major 80s TV series - bleh! Movie skipped all that jive.

+1 Saw it this afternoon in IMAX. The Shining made the movie for me - pieces of the score made me smile. I'm watching the Blu-ray again tonight.

Great news ... but must hit $500 to be profitable:

Good news - RP1 is profitable and will likely spawn a sequel, almost certainly with a new director. No official word yet, author Ernest Cline has been busy writing RP2. China has been the major box office generator which is good and bad - China only allows foreign studios to garner 25% of box office receipts (much less than in US) and strictly limits the number of foreign films:
