Jeff, I bought this at auction.  I'm having an expert on early Flemish art clean up the painting by removing the old varnish which has darkened over the years.  This alone should make a significance difference in bringing up the various details of the composition.  Once the varnish has been removed, I will re-assess the painting before deciding what the next step should be.  I'm open to have some minor restoration work performed on the Infant Christ, which has suffered the most from actual touching and rubbing by devotees, but first I would like to see how much of the original paint is still there.  I'm curious to see how things will look once the restorer has started working on it.

It sounds like it will brighten and clean up nicely, once the age old varnish has been gently removed.

Again, it's a true, beautiful gem there, Benjamin.

Thanks Jeff, I think so too.  I usually tend to collect 17th century paintings (typically Italian and French), but I've been looking for a good example of this type of early Northern Renaissance work for a while, so I'm pretty happy with this purchase.

I'd be very pleased with a purchase of this caliber, too, Benjamin.

I was wondering (if you have a minute and are able).. could you take and post a close up pic of the Christ child's face?

Thanks, Benjamin. I just wanted to see what the centuries of "good luck" touching had done to that area of the painting.

It's somewhat difficult to see it clearly in pics, but the paint around the child's face, as well as Mary's breast, is rather abraded and as a result is a bit thin.

Super sizing your pic shows what you mean about the abraded paint.

I think we almost need a Fine Art thread or section maybe.

Any movement/decision on the map restoration, Benjamin?

Unfortunately not, as I haven't been in NYC for more than a few days at a time lately.  I'm currently in the Amazon until the end of next week.  I tend to get a bit distracted in the summer due to travels.  Will get back to focusing on that map when I get back home in the fall.

Perhaps some Amazon travelog pics might be forthcoming?  ;D

Sure, but in which thread should I post them?

Ben, I'd create a thread here in this board: http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/board,36.0.html
