Backingtothefuture - Bringing Posters Back to Life
« on: March 08, 2017, 04:52:45 PM »
Good Day,

I am truly gratified to be one of the newest members of the All Poster Forum. I am the owner of a Canadian based poster restoration and framing business, Backingtothefuture. However, long before becoming a poster restoration specialist, I was a movie poster buff. My favorite genres are action/adventure/western from the 60's, 70's and 80's. You probably won't be surprised to discover that my favorite actors are Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Paul Newman and Sean Connery/Roger Moore. Movies such as Bullitt, Dirty Harry, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Cowboys and all of the Bond films had a profound impact on me growing up.

Although collecting was fun, I was driven to take it to the next level and that led to poster restoration and shrink wrap framing. I have been restoring posters now since 1999 and the real attraction is the variety of challenges you face with each poster, the fantastic images you get to see, and eventually bringing what seems like a worthless piece of paper back to life. We have clients from around the world who entrust us with their treasures and this is the ultimate complement. We take care to provide the highest quality work we can at a reasonable price. The bottom line is excellent customer service.

I look forward to participating in the conversations that take place on the All Poster Forum website. If you have any questions or would like to check us out, please visit www.backingtothefuture.com.

Sincerely, Dan Miles.

Welcome3.gif, Dan. Glad to have you and please have fun and enjoy the forum.

A number of APF folks have used your services in the past, so you are in good company. And photo examples of some of your fine work are in various threads here, also.

And thanks, too, for offering to answer any restoration or backing questions folks may have.

cheers

Jeff

Hey Dan, this Marked Woman title LC was discussed in another thread.

What steps would you do to help make the card lighter and brighter, overall? (The back is full of tape/repairs as can be seen). And are there processes that would help to keep the colored inks from lightening during that procedure?

Hello Jeff,

your Marked Women card is a prime candidate for paper backing, that way the tape could be removed and the missing paper replaced. It looks like the paper has browned somewhat and could benefit from a cleaning, possibly with a mild bleach solution. Typically, that will lighten the background which will allow the original colours to stand out.

I hope that helps.

Cheers, Dan Miles.

Thanks, Dan, for the info and steps you would take to help bring this card back. Especially how a mild bleach batch would behave with the colored inks on the card.

Sadly it isn't mine, (and I wouldnt mind owning a copy one day).

Hey Dan.

Boy, you really are brand-new to the forum.  I joined three years ago and have mostly lurked.  If it's OK with you, and when I have some time, I'll post some pics of all the great work you've done for me over the years.

Cheers,

Carlos.

Good question and info. there, Jeff and Dan.

I agree that the backing would be wise, if only to remove the tape, and stabilize the piece.

In my experience, and based on what I've heard from others, even a mild bleach will fade the colors.  It's worse for certain colors, especially red, as it's highly volatile.  It's a personal preference whether one would rather have that new, bright white look, or more of the weathered, vintage look.

By the way,  welcome1 aboard, Dan.  It's cool to have another resident, restoration expert on board.

OK...just a test to see if I can successfully post an image on this forum.  This is a pic of one of a Spider (1958) Belgian poster Dan linenbacked and restored for me a couple of years ago.

You just have to be sure to put the img URL inside the image tags  image.gif

And that Spider poster turned out looking swell, too.

Erik...it's the Yugoslavian "Day at the Races" from the 50's.  You're right, it is a fun poster with great cartoon busts of Groucho, Harpo and Chico Marx.  Dan did a great job on it and it really pops now.  I'll post a pic of it soon.

Would love to see some close up pics of Dan's actual restoration work (i.e. paper replacement, colouring, cleaning, airbrushing etc). Most 'restored' posters look fantastic from a safe distance - close up is what truly tells the tale.  Before and after would be perfect  thumbsup.gif

Jeff is going to upload a pic for me. Dan recreated a corner for my Abbott and Costello poster which was hard to find an image of. There was actually no image to locate and no image to base it on. But Take a look at the picture for close up of the work. I highly recommend Dan!
