2500 VHS movie posters, now what???
« on: February 01, 2017, 08:14:50 PM »
So I just bought 2500+ VHS movie posters in the cardboard tubes. I've taken them out and wrapped in opposite direction and placed them back in there to get them to lay flat. They date from the late 80's till around 2000. Now what do I do.

Maybe start cataloging the titles? Are there duplicates? Condition?

And  welcome1 to the forum, too, mooreman. Enjoy the people and poster party.

What is the earliest title you came across?

Cataloging..... horror, action, sci-if...etc??
Or by actors?
Have three stacks  layed flat,  about 10" thick each.

IMO, you've got several options.  Do you want to collect, or are you looking to flip them?

If you plan to keep them, you need to first catalog them.  Build a database with each poster.  Title, condition, possibly actors, genre, and most important the tube or drawer it is in.  Look into a flat file, or at least storage boxes.  Catalog and organize.  I would also photograph them. It is going to take a lot of time, but when you are done, you will have something.

If the goal is to flip them, there is a different strategy.  First realize that 90% of what you have is worthless.  I have looked through several lots like this one.  The best stuff has invariably been grabbed by store employees and customers, leaving the stuff of lesser desirability.

Make 3 piles.  One for stuff you want to keep.  One for stuff you think you can sell.  and a big one for kindling.  Take the big pile, divide it into lots of 20 and try to sell it as bulk lots. Start bids at $1 with $15 shipping. There are additional hassles with getting proper tubes for shipping.  If you don't get sturdy tubes, you will have a high rate of return of damaged posters.  Major hassle.  I see this as higher than desirable expenses with little return.  Probably not worth your time and best to simply use them as Christmas wrapping paper.

The ones you want to keep are obvious.  catalog and store properly as above.  The ones you think you can sell need to be photographed and placed on eBay.  Read elsewhere on selling on eBay as it has its own challenges.  Since these are video releases, don't expect to get high prices.  A theatrical poster may go for $100, but you will be lucky to get $10-20 for the video version. There are exceptions, but they are few and far between.

Best of luck.  I hope some of this is helpful.

I'd run ALL the horror/sci-fi posters through the EMP database to see which ones have an unexpected value.  You'd be amazed at the prices realized by things that would be in my kindling pile, but that seems to be limited to obscure sci fi and slasher films.

EMP database????

Be sure to use the "Search Filters" at the left. In this case, under "Posters by Type" you click "Show More" and you scroll down to "video poster" and you click on it, and you are now SOLELY viewing the 2822 video posters we have auctioned.

And then you can order them using the "Sort" dropdown at center, so you can see them by "Date Sold (Newest First)" or "Price (High to Low)" or whatever is needed.

But once you are just seeing video poster results, DON'T use the regular search. Instead use the "Search within" at right, and now you will solely be searching the video posters.

It takes a while to get used to it, but once you do it gets easier and easier!
We (eMoviePoster.com) hold 2,500 to 4,000 auctions every four weeks.
We have auctioned more movie paper for more money (in real sales) than any auction in the world.
We have the longest continuously running auctions of any auction, with over 1,914,280 to date from over 3,192 consignors.
See all of our current auctions in one gallery here: http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/all.html

Are you based in the UK, or US?

If the UK, and have UK video posters, do you have any from the Bond series?  Would be happy to peruse.

Good luck.

I'm from the United States. I remember seeing a bond poster but I think it has Peter Brodnan.

So after going to the EMP and running about 30 posters. All we're worth money, some good money. a
I still have hundreds and  hundreds to go. So how would I list them all and let people just go to eBay and bid on the whole lot at one time

What ever happened with all these video posters?

Did you sell them, in one bulk group? Or are you still deciding what to do with them?

With you wanting $100.00 for them all, I thought you would have had a definite buyer, since you first posted about them. Good luck, whatever happens.

Send me some pics, ddilts399@mchsi.com  if they are in good shape and you want to bring them to me, in IA we can probably work something out.

Quite the cache of posters, and cool Robocop, mooreman.  With a little bit of promotion, I'm sure someone in your area would be happy to swoop in and snag the whole lot, at a bulk lot price, of course.  It would probably be challenging to individually sell 2,500 of anything while running heavy machinery.  I think that if you fish around a little bit, you could get more than $100 for a lot like that.  In any case, good luck.

Even selling them, as a lot for $1.00 each ($2500.00) would certainly be a nice deal, all the way around, as many would likely sell for much more than that.

No one in their right mind would pay $1 a poster for that lot.
