Hmmmm.... Isn't Luke already the last Jedi?  And wouldn't that imply Luke would have to die if Rey is to become a Jedi?

Good questions. I feel there's more to the name than the obvious.

Rey could turn bad and join Kylo (unlikely but not impossible)

Luke could bite it and Rey is the last Jedi.

Technically Rey's no Jedi yet. She's not trained in the Jedi ways.  Therefore Luke is the last Jedi until Rey is fully trained.

Jedi is plural people, come on!!!  You've never heard the term Siths or Jedis used when talking about a group of them.

True, but people don't usually use the term "last" unless there's only one.

It could go either way...

interesting read -

http://screenrant.com/star-wars-8-last-jedi-title-meaning/

Interesting if a bit long-winded and seemingly written to reach a target word count.

I feel like he's overthinking the name. Look back at the previous six films and there's little debate what each name implies.

A New Hope only took on a strong dual meaning following Rogue One. To the Jedi the new hope is Luke and they're being drawn to Tatooine before Rogue One (see Star Wars Rebels).

To the Rebels that hope is the Death Star plans as spoken by Leia in the closing scene.
