A Blast From My Past - King Kong 1976
« on: October 07, 2016, 01:25:32 PM »
Our local theater held a drawing to give away their King Kong theater lobby display, and lucky me ended up with it and had to talk my parents into carting it home!  Needless to say, it would prove difficult to set up in our house.....

Now that is SO cool.

The Million dollar question is: Do you still have it?  prayer.gif

I'm pretty impressed that your parents carted it home! Given the size of the thing, how did they go about doing that?

As a matter of fact, I DO still have it!  It has been stored in my parents' attic for 40 years. Not ideal conditions, but where else do you keep something this size? My dad asked me the other day if I could take it home soon, as they are down-sizing LOL.  I had a quick look at it: the backdrop is folded down properly, and it has been facing a wall so I'm hoping that UV damage has been kept to a minimum.  This may take some time, but when I get it out I'll take some good pics 👍😀

Welcome to APF, Ceesethis.
That is a very cool Kong display you have there.
I look forward to seeing new pics after you get it back out into the open.
 cheers

As far as the original move goes, station wagons were a lot bigger back then! Now, I'm relying on memory here, but I believe that it breaks down as follows: The display is composed of 3 main components. The backdrop is approx 7 x 10  and folds down into 1/4 size. Kong and the Twin Towers are one piece; his arm folds in and he also folds down in half.  The "King Kong" logo has tabs to attach it to the front. There are 3 or 4 posts which hold Kong upright from the back and the backdrop requires anchoring to a wall, which is why my friend Jeff in the picture is holding on to the left side!

My Dad had an office in the WTC while they were filming and one afternoon he called home and asked the strangest question: 'Did we have room in the house for a giant Kong hand?'
Universal had built a lifesize (styrofoam?) Kong to lie dead at the foot of the WTC and now that filming was complete, the giant prop was disappearing piece by piece as fans were helping with the cleanup.

Mom said Dad was 'nuts' and 'no, we didn't have any room for a giant Kong hand unless he wanted to sleep on it in the back yard.'

In hindsight, this coulda been one of the factors that led to their divorce.

Hey Craig,

Have you been able to bring this great piece home yet and take any pics?  prayer.gif

Jeff,

Not yet! Hopefully this spring and then I'll be able to set it up outside and see what I've got. Thanks for asking!  Craig

Yeah, this isnt exactly the best time of year back there, even if you did get hit with a little, off the wall, 60º warm spell. The snow could start flying again, any minute.   ;)

Good luck, when you get it home and setting it up, once again!

Not yet, Jeff! I'm in the middle of a basement remodel project and have a graduation party coming up in a couple weeks at the house for my son, so I am waiting until all of that dust settles-- probably end of June. My parents have moved up their downsizing date, however, so it may show up in my driveway sooner than that!

So cool! I have to imagine, due to the size, that many of those lobby displays were destroyed. It's great to see at least one that survived.

The suspense builds, Craig! Looking forward to the unveiling, once it happens.

Well, this all took a few months longer than expected, but Kong is back in my possession. There are years of attic dust to clean off but I’ll get some pics posted in the coming weeks.

Cant wait, Craig! clap clap clap

Aside from the dust layer, does it look in good shape, as far as you can tell?

Me, too!  Craig, my aunt gave me a pair of King Kong socks advertising this movie when it came out.  I'm looking forward to seeing your huge display way more than seeing those socks again!  Okie

Tang, what poster is this? Or where's it from? The image of KONG (his face) is very different from the version I normally think of, with this poster.

Its way cool, tho, too. Nice addition to your collection.

Here’s a teaser. I wish that my time was my own but unfortunately Kong hasn’t been able to be a priority. As you can see, the colors look great still.
