Title: Looking for Interviews for Movie Poster Book
Post by: Amanda_Sheriff on August 14, 2015, 04:59:07 PM
Hello, my name is Amanda Sheriff. I'm a poster collector and I work for Gemstone Publishing (the folks who write the Comic Book Price Guide). I'm currently writing a book on movie poster collecting. It's a "how to" book with features on genres, franchises, artists, directors, etc., plus suggestions for framing and storage, info on linen backing and size definitions, etc.

We are also running interviews with industry professionals and we'd like to have interviews with actual collectors. I'm looking for collectors who are interested in being interviewed. If you are, please email me at samanda@gemstonepub.com.

Here is a link with more about the book: http://scoop.diamondgalleries.com/Home/4/1/73/1023?articleID=161669

I look forward to hearing from you!

Amanda Sheriff

Greetings, Amanda and  welcome1 to APF.
While you might be interested in interviewing some of us, we are certainly interested in the posters you collect.
Tell us more about yourself through your posters. What do you collect?
How does that sound?
 cheers

 welcome1 Amanda.

Sounds like a great idea with the interviews, as well as touching on the various aspects of collecting.

I haven't been to the other boards to see if Amanda has made the rounds yet, but she sure did come to the right place to find collectors as specialized and as fascinating as the membership here at APF.
While this might sound a bit like BS advertising/self promotion/brown nosing, we have such a truly eclectic roster with a diversity of tastes that spans all genres and all countries.
I hope some of us get on board with this project.
It would be good for the hobby and cool to read.

My copies came from Rochester - should I be worried?

A dude from Rochester randomly bought me a beer and a slice of pizza while waiting in line at the concession during the ball game yesterday... I tried to turn him down but he insisted I pay it forward instead.  A bit awkward in the end... but nice guy.

First, I'd like to thank the folks who have already responded to my request. I will be emailing you tomorrow morning.

As for myself, I've been a movie lover since childhood. Not in the sense that pretty much everyone loves movies, but as a fan of the whole process. I love learning about behind the scenes details, like how directors establish their style, how actors put themselves in the right state of mind for a scene, goofs that made it into the movie, moments of improv, how stunts were performed, etc. I find all of that to be fascinating.

My movie poster collection consists of one-sheets from the the late '70s to now. My criteria is simple: posters from movies I love and posters with cool artwork.

I enjoy going to horror and comics/pop culture conventions, so I've been able to get a bunch of posters autographed by actors and actresses. My boyfriend and I have a Nightmare on Elm Street signed by Robert Englund (with a sketch of Freddy), Breakfast Club signed by Anthony Michael Hall, The Princess Bride signed by Cary Elwes, Boondock Saints signed by Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery, and David Della Rocco, Terminator 2 signed by Linda Hamilton and Robert Patrick, Halloween signed by John Carpenter and 6 actors who played Michael Myers, and Scream signed by Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, and Roger Jackson.

Other favorites of mine are Batman Returns, Beetlejuice, Cabin in the Woods, Clue, The Dark Knight (advance style A), Dirty Dancing, A League of Their Own, Rent, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Star Wars: A New Hope (circus poster), A New Hope (style C), Empire Strikes Back (GWTW version), Return of the Jedi (style B), and Twister (both international versions).

If I had a wealthy disposable income I'd love to have The Bride of Frankenstein (style D), Dracula (style F), pretty much all of the Star Wars posters (specifically the Revenge of the Jedi teaser and the Japanese Millennium Falcon), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Some Like It Hot, How to Marry a Millionaire, Psycho, Vertigo, Grease, and plenty more.

My favorite artist is Drew Struzan. I think he's amazing, so I'd love to add the Back to the Future posters, Hook, Adventures in Babysitting, Masters of the Universe, and a bunch more. I also really like Saul Bass and Robert McGinnis.

As for the book, let me start with an easy question. No, this is not a price guide. That would be a herculean task. Gemstone, the company I work for, has started a line of books we refer to as "How to". We currently have a guide to collecting animation art, guide to collecting comics, and in November we'll release a guide to cosplay.

The goal is to provide info that is interesting and informative for people who have been collecting for years and those who are new to collecting. We'll define U.S. and international sizes, explain what linen backing is and the pros and cons of the process, ways to safely store posters, and provide a market overview that shares what popular posters sell for. We'll have features on Star Wars, James Bond, Universal Monsters, Disney, Tarzan, Blaxploitation, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Alfred Hitchcock, James Cameron, Jack Davis, Saul Bass, and other series, subgenres, directors, and artists. We'll have interviews with people who work in the industry at auction houses and as dealers, as well as interviews with collectors.

This book is truly a labor of love for me and I hope other collectors and movie fans will feel the same way.

Welcome Amanda. This should be interesting. Take a look around the site. You'll find lots of different styles and tastes in movie posters; not just U.S. posters, but posters from around the world. As a former journalist, I do NOT envy you the task at hand. It will be an incredible undertaking. (Thank god I was never assigned such a mammoth project. Ha!) Best of luck to you.

Hey folks, sorry I've been kind of MIA of late, but I've been working like a dog to finish the book. thumbsup.gif Today is my deadline!!!!! Thankfully everything is just about finished and heading for layout. There will be at least three interviews in the book from folks I met via All Poster Forum. I'll let those three tell you themselves, if they are so inclined.

If I sent you the questionnaire and you responded, but did not hear back from me, then I did not receive your answers. But, I can still interview you for our website: http://scoop.diamondgalleries.com. It'd be a great way for me to amp up excitement for the book and you'd have thousands of people reading about your awesome collection/movie and collecting knowledge. Win-win! We are also already considering the second edition of this book (I've already started the list of what I want to cover) so interviews can be done in a few years for that one. If you're interested in being interviewed for the website, send me an email: samanda@gemstonepub.com

And don't worry, All Poster Forum is mentioned more than once in the book.  ;D

If you have any questions, let me know.

No one in particular, just a "posters in action" thing.  It would add more to the person's story, rather than just jpegs or their posters.  Not that there's anything wrong with that!

I'm glad you guys got your copies and are digging the book! I hope everyone who buys it has as much fun reading it as I did writing it. I already have a list of subjects I want to cover in a follow-up a few years down the road.

We have plenty of copies and will go back to print for a second round if the initial print run sells out.

In the meantime, I interviewed Sean Linkenback for Scoop. We talked about Godzilla and comics, in addition to movie posters. I'm hoping to post another poster collector interview in the next 2 or 3 weeks. Here's a link to the current interview:

(I had an issue or two of the Overstreet Comic Price Guide way back in the early 80s or possibly late 70s. This was NOTHING like that.) I like how it was done. There were articles on various poster artists, interviews with collectors, looks at specific film series (Tarzan, James Bond, Star Wars, etc.), storage, etc. Much niced than just a list of titles and prices (which was like that old comic price gfuide i am remembering was like). Nice full color glossy pages throughout. VERY well done.

A bit off topic, but what makes a collection "Legendary"???

Wondering the same thing myself.

Jeff,
Thanks for posing the link to the SFO Museum's CLASSIC MONSTERS exhibit featuring stuff from Kirk Hammett's collection (I had never heard of him until this...d'oh! My bad!). I actually went to the exhibit today---which was a big ordeal because it's in the airport beyond the security areas for ticketed passengers---and I wasn't flying out any where. Ha!  But I did get in with the aid of a super helpful museum curator. Here are some photos below. I'll share more about it in the Kirk Hammett thread (which I also just saw for the first time today. Ha!) later tonight.

Cheers!

(This is the program or catalog for the exhibit, front and back ...the curator gave it to me along with a fold out brochure)

It WAS a cool exhibit Jeff. More about it and photos on the Kirk Hammet thread.

Below is the brochure (looked similar to the cover of the catalog/program on the outside) as it unfolds to the small poster.

Sean Linkenback does have an awesome collection. Honestly, I could probably do a series of interviews with him on his movie posters, Godzilla collectibles, and comics with oodles of pictures. I'll keep that in mind for the future. thumbsup.gif

We (Gemstone Publishing) still write and publish The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, but it's the only price guide we produce. If I tried to create a movie poster price guide I'd be passed out from exhaustion because that would be waaaaay too big of a task.

I'm glad it was NOT a price guide. Prices are so willy nilly. They rise and fall quickly. What you did was very nice. i like the book.

there WAS a poster price guide for years (Poster Price Almanac) by John Kisch.
get an old copy and see the work involved.

I can only imagine the time that went into Kisch's book. It was time consuming finding prices for the posters mentioned in The Overstreet Guide to Collecting Movie Posters, and that was on just a couple dozen examples.

There's a new movie poster interview running in Scoop this week. It's with Monster A GoGo: http://scoop.diamondgalleries.com/Home/4/1/73/1017?ArticleID=171803

Thanks Eric, E, and Rosa. The only thing I wish i could fix in the interview is the apparent removal of the parentheses "()" from the text. I tend to go on and on (and I think that's from my former career as a writer, needing to stretch things out and all). All of the extraneous information in the article, which i had broken up with parentheses (at least I think i did), is now broken up with commas...which can get confusing when you are listing things AND commenting about them within the list. But whatever.

Thanks for reading it and the nice comments.  As i said in the interview, coming here was the BEST THING about my long and (until now) lonely collecting journey.

Hey Ari & Charlie. Thanks for reading it.

You know, despite collecting all of these years, until I was on here, I was very private about my collecting. I don't tell people about my hobby. No one at work knows about it. Sure, I had posters hanging all over my house, but even my mother--who had seen them many times--had NO IDEA of the scope of my collecting until I sent her the interview.

So thank you all for letting me come out of the "poster closet" somewhat (well, my poster closet is so full of posters I couldn't actually get into it if i wanted to)!

Just read your interview, MAGG.  Very nice and thank you for mentioning APF.  Very kind of you.  I don't usually read stuff like that, but I did tonight, and I'm wondering how many people read it.  Anyone knows?
