Post by: ladeda on July 04, 2015, 04:11:19 PM
a personal favourite genre of mine. - one i'm trying my hardest not to go bat-shit crazy with collecting. Doh.gif

so yes, all paper magick and occult related. including psychics and charlatans. - but please refrain from a flood of HP (pls)

Wow, that Swedish poster of THE CLAIRVOYANT is amazing!  Great subject matter.  I hope I didn't break your rule with this, but here's some favorites.  If you've never seen the Chinese Shaw Brothers film BEWITCHED you must, and I repeat MUST see it at some point.  It's about Thai black magic.  Click on the link below the poster title and watch 10 minutes of some of my favorite cinema.  The video doesn't do it justice but you'll get a sense along with the cool sound track.  This movie stays in my head for days.

Yep they are still on the wall.  I don't have any spotlight frames but I do have the thin spotlight plexi overlays in some of these frames.  Most however are the much thicker UV plexi + frames from Americanframe.com.  This is the best I could do in terms of panoramic pics:

Thanks Rosa.  I am not sure to be honest.  I don't have a Robinson collection specifically he was just in a lot of great noir (and noirish) films!  And of course he is one of my favourite actors so I don't mind that fact at all...

Nick I'm curious if yours come with a slip case to slide the book into for safe keeping?  I noticed for the first printing there was a video of somebody who took that huge monster out of a slip case like the newer smaller edition has.  Others have mentioned it as well.

By the way, I can't believe I spelled "weighs" as "ways".  I don't even drink. Doh.gif

Hi Mike! Mine didn't come with a slipcase but this might have been missing as it was a warehouse deal. The book was supposedly slightly damaged - but it wasn't, it's cardboard box was. Looking online I've seen mention of full editions with and without the slipcase. To be honest I'm just delighted to get the complete number of pages.

Here are a few random snaps for those interested. Photos only I'm afraid as I would have needed a giant scanner made of cast iron to accommodate it otherwise. It is undoubtedly THE historical magic reference book. When opened wide, it's a whopping 17.5 inches by 26 inches!

Thanks so much for the info Nick.  Mine was a used deal as well.  No slip cover or box for me, but I got it for a great $190 including shipping from the UK.  Awesome deal.  1 tiny tear on the dust jacket.  This book is out of this world great photos!
Title: Re: Magick & the Occult

Odd isn't it? It's a very sought after book yet the Amazon UK warehouse deal I found, gave me a totally unused copy still boxed and cellophane wrapped internally for £46 ($73)...and I think that included free delivery! That Amazon page is now showing the cheapest used copy at £167 ($256)  and the cheapest new for £650 ($997). Father Christmas obviously thought I'd been a very good boy...

The problem is establishing which edition you are buying. One French magic site was selling a 'first' through Amazon  which transpired to be the revised edition once I'd sent them a guide to the differences. They seemed genuinely shocked and apologetic and removed it from sale...

This one's on the lighthearted side, but it does involve magic (and dentistry...and bullfighting...):

Ari the Amazing, eh? Very impressive. Now is there any particular forum member or dealer you'd like to make disappear?

That's an excellent monocled magician you've got there Deke!

As for the 'Magic' book, I genuinely think that I'd have any edition rather than none whatsoever. Although a few images might have been left out of the most recent edition there are so many of them to begin with, that you're never going to feel robbed. In fact I don't believe there's a single page - other than the chapter headings - which doesn't have at least one decent image bobbing about in it somewhere. What you will find however is that a lot of the writing is 'duplicated' as it's a trilingual book with captions in English, German and French. But as I said, it's so image heavy that you cannot help but delight in it. As far as magic poster are concerned I don't think there can be a better reference.

My favourite of all films of the genre are ones about charlatans and few are better than Nightmare Alley. A melodramatic sleaze parading as a (really well done) noir. Tyrone Power carries the film wholly. It's a pity he never got another role quite like it. Bonus +++ for the carny (another fav interest) settings.

I'd like to find a copy of that poster, too. The old and new world art elements are just amazing. Looks to be dated 1967.

Lucifer Rising, with  Jagger and Faithfull.   Music wrote in jail by Beausoleil (an associate of the Charles Manson) because Jimmy Page was too high on coc/hero and unable to complete the OST.  The movie itself is average but the music is not bad if you like smooth rock-prog/esoteric Kautrok stuff.

You can get a signed poster (KENNETH ANGER SIGNED LTD PRINT OF THE 1980 LUCIFER RISING PREMIERE POSTER) for 150 USD - http://www.kennethanger.org/new-products/kenneth-anger-signed-ltd-print-of-the-1980-lucifer-rising-poster

Yeah, the poster is from '67. I believe it was just for screenings, it isn't much bigger than 14 x 19 inches.

ladeda, I see the poster is signed on the lower right, by Rick Griffin.

I really like how he incorporated Gustave Dore's killer image of Dante being carried by an Eagle and then created the title, top area and side pillars to create this poster image. It's really powerful.

Curse of the Demon I would say is Tourneur's masterpiece. It's worse for the silly shots of the demon and it can't wholly recover from that, but it holds up incredibly well. There will always be something eerie about the English countryside and Tourneur, a master of atmosphere exploits it well.

The Italian 4-fogli is grand:

The film is also a bit legendary for Kate Bush's use of: "It's in the trees, it's coming!" in Hounds of Love.

A pretty cool looking magic poster from 1910, showing magician, Nordini, and his flaming cauldron escape illusion.

I had the pleasure of going to this exhibition in Montreal with Dave Rosen (Posteropolis) recently! It was stunning. There is a big book published with a lot of the posters.

ILLUSIONS: THE ART OF MAGIC
The exhibition takes on the period of magic shows’ golden age and its advertising and promotional mechanisms that relied on phantasmagoric imagery. Discover a selection of breathtaking posters featured for the first time in Canada, mostly dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, that retraces the social history of this still active phenomenon.
