Title: May 2015
Post by: paul waines on May 01, 2015, 12:52:29 PM
Can't believe I've started 3 months in a row....

Anyway, I've just rescued these 2, they are from the 40's, they turned up today, and are currently getting a gentile flattening...

Three's a charm, as they say, Paul!

And what a great way to start the month! Those are both just beautiful!

And they look to be getting the patented Waines Flattening Treatment™, too!

It's 8 foot Jeff, maybe just over. It's actually 3d-ish, but difficult to see in the pic.

Sweet baby Xenu, that Chappie is magnificent.  Divorce fodder, but magnificent!

Finally got around to uploading a few of my own.  Swedish poster for the 'Swedish Mary Pickford,' Sie Holmquist in '24's Just Around the Corner:

Strictly speaking, these aren't new acquisitions.  But today I did finally open up and photograph some EMP bulk lots from a while ago.  I have such a love/hate relationship with Bruce's bulk lots.  I've found a few diamonds in the rough, but now I also have a huge batch of offensively ugly posters that I couldn't hope to sell, but don't have the heart to discard.  First world problems  eyeroll

Anyway, here are some of the good ones.

Algo Flota Sobre el Agua, by Jose Espert (1948).  I earlier posted a Mexican window card I have with the same artwork.

Exactly! It's so frustrating wanting a specific poster and it hardly ever appears for sale (or on the rare occasion it does it just happens to be the month when you have no money) This beaut popped up on a website and I was straight in. Had just been paid three months wages from a client who was overdue so it was fate.

Now if only I can find a Paris Je T'aime Japanese, An Italian 4 foglio of Vivre sa Vie and a decent looking Bedazzled Quad (Peter Cook/Dudley Moore version) I'll be happy for life!

First off, congrats to all for the awesome pickups so far this month! Keep 'em coming!

Was going to post my latest acquisitions since Oct 2014, but that didn't seem right. Instead I'll shamelessly plug my thread (Mike's Little World (http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,5661.msg178026.html#msg178026)) and you can see all my latest goodies there. thumbsup.gif

Now this one just arrived in the mail today and I'm super excited to get it. Kind of a unicorn for me. Didn't see any on HA and only 2 copies on EMP, 1 of them linen (blech! j/k).

Beautiful flat file!  Shit is indeed real  :)

My flat file is very similar, except mine has six drawers instead of ten.  I remember when I got it thinking how I would be able to store a lifetime's worth of posters in it.  Of course now it's nearing capacity...

All that to say, your flat file looks great and cherish your ten drawers.  Great Neverending Story poster too!

Here it is with sticker Paul. I guess it's to add the writing without ruining any walls. The flash of the camera is highlighting the sheen and there are a few major wrinkles with the application, but you get the idea.

Title: Re: May 2015

I'm very jealous of that plan chest and the treasures that it will no doubt hold. I haven't posted anything in awhile so here are a few new recruits:

(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c102/skyjackers/ST_zpseu6wkx9k.jpg) (http://s26.photobucket.com/user/skyjackers/media/ST_zpseu6wkx9k.jpg.html)

Been looking for this version of ST with the frame for ages. Finally found this although I'm not 100% sure it's authentic so I have mixed feelings about it.

(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c102/skyjackers/DARK_SHADOWS_DK_TRANSIT_POSTER_zpsylp4rcsz.jpg) (http://s26.photobucket.com/user/skyjackers/media/DARK_SHADOWS_DK_TRANSIT_POSTER_zpsylp4rcsz.jpg.html)

This is a huge transit poster (in 2 pieces) from Denmark. Cost me a fortune, way more than the poster could ever be worth but, you know...

(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c102/skyjackers/NBC%20FR_zpsxbagnjap.jpg) (http://s26.photobucket.com/user/skyjackers/media/NBC%20FR_zpsxbagnjap.jpg.html)

Really happy with this one though. It's a big Frenchie which I've been looking for one for ages, sans folds, so I was very happy when I spotted this. I don't really do folds.

Thanks Rosa! It's in outstanding condition. I don't even know if it was ever used. The drawer interiors aren't scratched or anything. Needs a few screws tightened and a little wipe down for shine, but other than that it's ready to go.  thumbsup.gif
I'm really excited because I can now use the top for flattening the posters before they go in the drawers. There's more than enough room for a quad and even two 24x36 prints side-by-side.

I'm very jealous of that plan chest and the treasures that it will no doubt hold.

Thanks! thumbup
Nice pick-ups, btw! Really like the Sweeney Todd. Hope it's authentic. And if only I could find the Eva Green Dark Shadows poster....

Price tag (roughly)?

A couple of bills from this hand, a couple of bills from that hand. :)
Just curious, how much would people expect it to be or pay for it?

First rate plan chest Mike, I don't know how I managed without one all those years back..

Thanks Paul! Likewise. The tubes are getting to be too many and the table with all the posters is starting to buckle (well, not really, but they should have protection).

Very nice acquisitions all!

And thanks for reminding me just how badly I need a flat file.  If only there were easier to acquire in the backwater country I live in...

Yeah, trying to find one of the right size is hard enough, but for there to be a scarce supply... I wish you luck!

Craigslist is your friend. Brand new those things are, like you said, crazy expensive. I found mine on craigslist by searching 'flat file'. I'd seen the one I bought a week or so earlier but it was listed at $699. Too much for me, but I kept watching it. Then the seller dropped the price to $399 and I pounced (maybe prematurely, but whatever). From first message to in my garage took less than 8 hrs (and that was because I was very inefficient in the way I went about it). The guys I bought it from are storage locker auction buyers and this was in one of them. They were about 15 miles away and agreed to meet same day, so one inspection and one rental truck later, it was all mine. I didn't do an exhaustive price search online but from what I was seeing, brand new 24x36 sized 3-5 drawer wood cabinets were starting at ~$649 and easily broke the $1k mark. I saw lots of metal ones on my craigslist, some of which looked nice, but I prefer the wood. Goes nicer with interior decor, imho. But I think people here have been lucky enough to even find free metal cabinets if you look long and hard enough (for some reason I want to say Rich mentioned that once a while ago).

Charlie acquired the metal one, and then needed to get rid of some rust.

Wood is far the best way to go for paper.

Why is wood better for paper?  Yes I know paper is essentially wood pulp.

But is there not a concern about latent acids in the wood fibres or bugs being attracted to the wood?

This should probably also be in the Unicorns thread but today I added (http://www.filmonpaper.com/posters/akira-b0-2001-dvd-release-japan/) an incredibly rare Japanese B0 for a 2001 DVD release of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira to the Film on Paper collection.

Featuring an illustration of Tetsuo by Otomo himself and designed by regular collaborator Toshiaki Uesugi (AKA Mach55Go!) this poster was intended for use only in the largest Tokyo Metro stations and it is thought that less than 100 were printed. Many were stolen from the stations, including this one (it still has the Japanese Rail sticker in the bottom right) and there can only be a few surviving. Uesegi's own site features the below picture of six copies hanging in Shinjuku station in 2001 and the translated text details that Otomo himself kept 5 copies of the poster.

I first saw the poster during a 2014 visit to Japan when I went to an exhibition of posters for Otomo's work and I assumed I'd never get to add it to the collection. A year later one appeared on Yahoo Japan and, with the aid of a Japanese friend, I was lucky enough to win the auction.

This picture featuring Blue, one of my cats, gives you an idea of the size of the poster!

I guess it depends on the surrounding environment keeping cool and dry more than the drawers?
How Charlie got rust in his...maybe he was using it when the posters were still a little too wet.  The solution: stainless steel ...might put you back $5K-6K though.

Re: the wood vs. metal file cabinet debate, one of most important things is that the paint is non off-gassing.  Most average to high end metal file cabinets have that type of paint or powder coating, and of course if it's wood and not painted, that's not an issue.

Mike, that file cabinet is a beast.  With ten drawers that are 40"x52", and fairly thick wood, how much does that weigh, overall?  Do you know much about how old it is, the manufacturer, etc.?

Nice , Mike. Good score!  thumbsup.gif

What year is this from? The 1960s? (emovie sold a 4F, by the same artist, Morini, and with the same title font, that is also described as probably from the 1960s: http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/14302743.html  )

With the amount of tape on the back, do you think you will have it restored at some point? And what kind of tape is it? Paper? Or a clear, celo-type?
Title: Re: May 2015
Post by: 50s on May 16, 2015, 11:32:41 PM
well the Mexicans I'm sure have worse paper as the ones I have are all brown (foxed) where the paper should look white or sorta white. I have plenty of Italians and most paper looks good

Re tape (looks like white tape - conservation?), well its not normal to have lots of tape on the back of italians but for those posters in poor condition yes it is - having tape on the back on all folds, on the edges and corners and everywhere else in between. It'll come off when getting the poster CPR'd or is that CSR'd (previously known as linenbacked)

Don't worry about the tape, writing in ink on the back is much worse (unless the tape is starting to discolor the paper)

Its that brown paper like tape on the back. Hasn't come through or discoloured it. I was going to restore it. But I had a discussion with Bruce. He had recommemded if I were to auction it off. To leave it as is. So as of now I am undecided. Otherwise, that was my main plan. To get it backed and restored.

The usual going rate 'round here is $150-200 per used 5 drawers for metal, with a $50-150 or so premium for wood.  So it's a nice pickup from that perspective - although the whole having to rent a truck and all can certainly bump up the costs... In my case it was an $80 last minute rental for a $50 five drawer (wood, but not as snazzily presentable).  I still need another 5-10 drawers, but have lost a lot interest in trying to get them...

At this point, the 'free' thing for these is almost a relic of another time, when the market was flooded with them due to the conversion to online workplaces and before the screen print freaks found a need.

BTW, if anyone uses Craigslist for regular searches and are not using IFTTT then you are wasting time...

Not quite true, Jeff.  I bought 3 flat files last year from Laguna Beach for $100 each.  I drive a Sequoia, so I did 2 round trips over two weekends to pick them up.  Brand new.  The larger size.  Like everything else, it's all about looking and waiting for the right ones to come along.  If you're in a rush, you pay.  If you're patient, you get a deal.

I already need 3 or 4 more so I'm looking again.

True only in the fact of the prices that i had seen the various (not a lot of times searching), for them. I didnt see prices that low on the listings I happened to come across.  ;)

And waiting is key.. no doubt.. and why i have yet to snag one for the right price.  ;D

So was anyone taking bets on how long until I bought one of these? Now just need someone in England to find me the quad.

Before anyone asks no I don't own any 27x40 frames, I think this actually make only the third 27x40 poster I have bought to keep.

That poster is better than most modern horror posters, but that movie was bloody awful. It was more of a horror spoof than anything that could be taken seriously.

+1.  It's a cool poster and a classic movie.  Even the folks at Rotten Tomatoes agree with the latter, as it's currently at 96%.

Akiko Stehrenberger has done some very cool works.  She has limited editions for a lot of stuff on her website:  http://akikomatic.com/group/movie-posters/ (http://akikomatic.com/group/movie-posters/)

It Follows is a strange one.  Chop,  like my friend didn't seem to like it. And he is not the only one. My friend thought it was boring. ..!!

I did like it. I think it is an instant classic. The film reminds me of the old (and not so old) Japanese horror films. And great poster too.

Congrats, Rich.

Thanks, it was a decent price so could not say no.

For rarity, is that a word that can be used with any modern poster? I really do not know what the print run on these is but I am sure though not huge by modern standards, it is an advance of course, it is not tiny either I would imagine. I also do not think there is or will be a public print run but the sheer number of theaters that will get at least one copy would put it at least into the thousands then add in the different vendors, etc. and it keeps going up. I was very surprised to see that our local theaters that we go to only had one copy up.

Mike, that file cabinet is a beast.  With ten drawers that are 40"x52", and fairly thick wood, how much does that weigh, overall?  Do you know much about how old it is, the manufacturer, etc.?

I was able to take it off the truck by myself after removing all the drawers. Not by lifting, of course, but by scooting and angling and rotating it off the truck. No idea on actual weight, though. I don't have much info, but it doesn't appear that old and is in really good shape (only a few nicks and scrapes, needs a replaced screw or two). Haven't checked for any manufacturer info yet.

Great May pickups everyone! Some really awesome paper posted. Gotta pick me up a few that I've seen, so thanks for that (the wallet lightening, that is). thumbup

thanks brother. Yes it is in su-weet condition and I am very happy to have it. It is my favorite film of the lot and the best Marlowe.

no I did not win the Falcon cards.. price was double my bid+
he was selling cards he replaced as I'm sure he got the tc+3 that sold BIN last month
I keep missing that title.. kind of aggravating

I was very surprised at the final price for those 2 Falcon cards...and I mistakenly wrote Falcon strikes back...but I meant the falcon Takes Over.. marlowe adaptation of course...I really like the insert poster format of that title... But the only ones i have seen have had major restoration...incidentally there were quite a few nice card sets that the seller you mentioned sold in lots for cheap the past few months....tons of noir and pulp titles....I was a little bummed I missed those... now and again I torture myself and look through the sold listings on eBay...
