Very nice, Paul!

Really nice, large portrait on Syn and the look of the woman on the right, on the Daughters of Darkness piece.... an eye grabbing stare she has.   ;)

I like this one a lot.  It's too bad they added the two midgets at the top left.  It would have been striking without them.

Another case of (possible) last minute additions and where to squeeze them in.

Tough to find originals..

My biggest acquisition in quite some time...

This is the original Seven Year Itch French poster.  Not the re-release that has sold 100s of times on Bruce and HA, but the first printing, which could very well be the only copy in existence.

T

Very nice, T.  thumbsup.gif

What leads you to believe this could be an only copy?

And what identifies this as the first issue? The printer's info?

*Edit.. I see that the location of the printer's info is printed vertically, lower left corner, on the later RR versions.  ;)

Title: Re: March 2015

Cool.

The thing is..with Dominique's image.. he could have used either an original or a RR image.. as all of the original, identifying text looks like it was photo shopped out (fold lines too), in order for him to make the cover image his own, unique advert.

Except that all the highlights have a nice crisp whiteness to them like the first printing.  The highlights on the re-release appear more yellow on both figures.
Title: Re: March 2015
Post by: erik1925 on March 10, 2015, 04:54:21 PM
True..but the entire image could also have been color adjusted, sharpened and tweaked with too, for the cover art to look right for his catalog, once all the text, titling and fold lines were "erased."

And T's comment that it made the cover at all, was the main point and certainly noted.  ;)

I finally found some pieces that i have been searching for forever to find...and in an unlikely place...these were found in a storage unit with a bunch of Jackie Coogan material...he was THE KID...and later Uncle Fester on the Adam's Family ...of course these cards fill an important hole in my Chaplin Collection...enjoy!!

Thanks Kids...glad you like them!!....I got so lucky on all of these...I made a low (but fair) offer on the entire 8 card Chaplin set...off of Ebay..which is risky...but the story seemed to be legit..and they are marked from the Strand theatre in Pennsylvania!! The lady who passed owned a lot of personal items from Jackie Coogan and had some sort of close relations to him...UNCLE FESTER!! The condition of these cards is..well  pretty amazing...the last set of these sold at a Heritage Comic Auction in 2005..they were pretty beat up and then Bruce auctioned them one card at a time later..but these are in way better condition..

The 1936 Revolt of the Zombie cards are probably rarer..they came from a little Book store in Texas...it was a sort of follow up to White Zombie...Halperin was a shitty producer but it uses Angkor Wat in Cambodia as a scenic backdrop..it was a failure so the original release material is scarce...

It actually took me some research to find that they were indeed original release...there are plenty of 1947 RR posters....I have never seen any other original release material either...I'm kicking myself that I didn't buy the other cards...oddly enough the other cards were really insignificant...these were far and away the best 3..and I love the female character in the diaphanous nighty...

Wow Tait, what a wonderful haul!
Love the Chaplin cards.

Thank you sir...what is interesting...at least to me...is that The Kid was Chaplin's first feature length film..it was hugely successful and there were tons of great posters created...but all of the other First National Chaplin film ephemera is much more obtainable...there are plenty of Sunnyside, Payday and A Dog's Life cards floating around...but material from The Kid..which is an essential Chaplin film for collectors.....is nearly impossible to find...and especially in this condition... there was presumably a huge amount of posters printed....and I was wrong Heritage sold a set in 2003...and Bruce auctioned the exact same cards in 2004 individually

First rate cards, I'm not a huge fan of Chaplin, but would buy those, the Zombie cards are right up my street, well done for getting those, they are excellent.

Was there a complete set and you broke them up!!!!  :o  Git back there and buy them :)

Please say it isnt so! You had the opp to buy other cards to have the complete set (or close to it) and you passed on them? Insignificant images or not... they are part of that set as a whole!  crying

Quick Tait, get back there and snag those others.... run, run, run!!!  ;D

"Insignificant"...that is my safe word/therapy mechanism for fucking up...I did try and get the others after I realized what they were and they were gone...there were 6 total I think...I wasn't entirely sure they were original at first ...so I waited for them to arrive in Hawaii..when they got here I realized what they were and then the others were already gone...But to put it into context I was negotiating the Chaplin deal at the same time...they were about to be listed individually and I wanted to keep them together and I had to move quick...so I saved one historic set of lobby cards and bastardized the other...I was also selling some cards...and overseeing some epic material for my gallery..I'm the Director of Antique Maps & Prints so I was a busy boy...I was also watching those Metropolis trimmed cards too...and I let them pass....there is something wrong with me faint2.gif nono hitself

It's the original Ohrai poster attached to the magazine that it came in.  As such, it is on the smaller side, but I still think that it is one of the very best Star Wars images.  I like it far more than the pricier Starfall, that is barely a Star Wars poster despite the pretty image.

I've never tried to get the Starfall because I don't consider it a Star Wars poster.  Like you said, it's just a commercial poster with a pretty image.  I could change my mind if I saw it for a good price, but I never looked for it.  The one above is great.  It was just in a magazine, never printed as a stand alone poster?

The is a slightly larger poster print/reprint/commercial, but I've heard that the printing quality suffers.

Something you might appreciate is that the back side of the magazine version is a poster for Close Encounters...

Hello everyone. I just signed up today. Back about 20 years ago I both bought and sold vintage movie paper as a way to help pay the bills while in college. Family life (and related expenses) have not allowed me to get back into it until now, but I hope to be back to stay. For myself, I collect Ernie Kovacs items of all kinds. For resale I will buy whatever I think is too cheap! My first acquisitions in nearly 20 years fall into the latter category.

Alice In Wonderland Six Sheet (original release)

Actually a pic of another one...I will post one of the actual one when it arrives.

Bambi 1956 re-issue six sheet

And a pair of Ronald Reagan linen backed one sheets:

Hell's Kitchen

Accidents Will Happen

Hope to join the fun. I have been collecting vintage sports memorabilia for the past 5 years or so, and am a long time member of the net54baseball board. Also have an Ebay account with over 1,500 feedback rating.

Please be kind and patient with the noob!

Nice ones, Archie. The Empire looks big...B1 size?

I had been holding out for the B1, but then I realized that, since the '82 Star Wars only comes in a B2, it would look odd to display all three posters at different sizes, whereas, with both being B2's, it would provide balance.

Also, my default size is B2's unless there is a really, really good reason to step up to the B1 (if available).

I have just mentioned in the Bond thread upon release of the new teaser poster, that maybe this is all we are supposed to accept in terms of design brilliance for the current poster output.

But then something like this comes along and I KNOW that the world deserves better.

Thanks Mark.  Yes, it is truly an amazing find.  There is apparently another one in Japan, some big collector of Frenchies, but it was quite damaged and linenbacked.  It is the one Besson used for his book, and it was heavily photoshopped on the cover.  No other French dealers (or elsewhere) have ever had a copy, let along a copy as clean and crisp as mine.

It joins my Laura, Gone With the Wind 2 panels and Rear Window as four true unicorns for movies I consider among the best ever made. :)

Can someone explain to me the obsession with Spring Breakers?  Many I'm getting too old.  The movie was a flop when it came out, it has a 65% fresh tomatoes, hardly a home run, it stars a bunch of starlets no one will ever remember.  What am I missing?

No offense taken, T.

It's a wild, fun movie, it's unique in some ways, and very well done, IMO.

I have also noticed that some folks are really into it.  A little while after the movie was released, and a few weeks after the first few Wish You Were Here one sheets had sold on eBay, a guy offered me $500 for mine.  I didn't sell it.

I thought Spring Breakers was an interesting film - as most H. Korine films are.  Not that I particularly liked it or even have much of a desire to see it again, but it was definitely not your typical Hollywood crapfest.  I think the studio didn't have a clue how to promote it so ended up giving it the "Spring Break 'Wooooo'" treatment for an ad campaign that did it an enormous disservice.

I've got to give it props for having James Franco delivering the performance of a lifetime as the doucheiest of all king douchebags, so there's that.

As for the poster, one word:  bikinis.

I agree with you on the film - I find that when public opinion on a film is divisive, there's usual something interesting there. However I think most of the ad campaign was pretty good - vulgar and neon and exploitative (apart from the main US one sheet which was bland), although whether that was intentional or just happened to fit nicely with the themes of the film is another question I suppose.

I confess to liking this poster campaign as well for its bizarre imagery and have a few different styles. I made the mistake of paying $80 for one of the first ones only to learn from a posting on this forum (by Mel I think) that this and other variations were available for $20 each directly from the distribution company. Coincidentally, Akiko produced some concept art for Springbreakers which was subsequently unused.

Hey don't undersell the posters you have. Show what you have that you like and better still show your passion for them and that will give you heaps of kudos, if that is what you like. If no one comments at all then maybe no one connects with it, still doesn't matter, people have different tastes, none right or wrong. Many don't connect with my Mexican Lobby Cards (except occasionally Ari) and any ribbing is done in jest.

I collect for the art as well and the posters are luckily of a good price/value because the movies usually suck.

Some here collect really bad stuff like Justin Bieber posters, so nothing you likely have could be that bad.

Right on, Steve.

And, to add.. dont ever think that what you have bought and added to your collection isnt worthy or is "less than." There is no such thing as either. Different posters, different likes, genres, styles, countries.... all have their place.

There was a time when certain (ex) members made people feel just the way you are expressing.. calling the material others got "inferior," "not the best style" etc. Fortunately, those people are 'out the house.' NO member should ever feel like they cant post anything, image-wise, for fear or criticism or being put down.

(Off me soapbox now.. LOL)  ;D

Good stuff there, Monster. Looking good!

I couldn't agree more. While I am way behind on acquisitions, I found there are many different collectors here. Some do not have the same tastes as I do, but they still welcome the stuff I share! Collect what you like.

That to me is so crucial.  Collect what you like, show it to us, don't show it to us, it's entirely up to you, but do not let anyone influence your tastes.  If you like it, you can't go wrong, even if someone tells you you're wrong.  I could even be that someone ;). But you know what, you don't know me and what I think is irrelevant.

Paul---Thank you for your words of encouragement. It's just a little intimidating coming on here as a newbie and seeing some of the amazing pieces others have... I'm actually just glad there are other poster freaks...er, enthusiasts out there!

Steve---I promise not to make fun of your Justin Bieber collection or your Mexican lobby cards (or you could combine the hobby and collect pictures from South of Bieber's border--oh my!) (Forgive my lame attempt at humor. I'm just home from a 12-hour shift, having a glass of wine and a melatonin so I can hopefully conk out quickly and do it all again starting tomorrow morning at 5 a.m. Joy...)

Jeff, people can be kicked outta here? Golly, I had no idea. Not that I'm ever the type to cause a fuss.

Chris:  "It's not his nose that grows"! Think of the children!  Hopefully they were using condoms and there were no children. If you haven't seen it, it's really a BORING flick.  ZZZzzz...

Lynaman---Clever! But snots? Nah. Remember it's NOT his nose that grows...

Gingerman---Thanks for the note. You're the King Kong guy, right? Ooooo... The 50s re-release is on my bucket list (since I'll never be able to get a 1933 original). I do have a 60s international release and one for all of the sequels and remakes since "King Kong Vs Godzilla" (alas, no "Son of Kong" at all...). I am all over the board when it comes to tastes in posters...but Kong is right up there.

T-- What you think may be irrelevant, but I am utterly enchanted by your avatar. So much so that I am humbled by whatever it is you have to say.

Anyway--thank you all for making me feel better about posting my crap...er, the stuff that I dig!

What, you actually know what my avatar is?  That would be a first.  I've had it since Holiday and I created this joint.

I love this movie.  I saw it when it came out in Paris and loved it.  I love Tom Waits and the music is awesome.  But I am clearly a minority.  Coppola spend all of his 70s money on it and yanked it out of the theaters when the reviews were less than appreciative.  He lost his independence and was forced to make studio movies like like The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, The Cotton Club and Peggy Sue Got Married.  Regardless, I though it was a very poetic movie.  Not for everyone, to be sure, but it touched me.  And Nastassja Kinski is in it, so there is that.

T...  I am sorry if I did something wrong. I didn't mean to "out" your avatar. It's a visual stunning movie. I can't blame you a bit for wanting to use a bit of it as your representation on here.

Steve--

I didn't let anything out of any bag. I read it on the super secret (for everyone on here but you) "Let's gossip about Steve and his Justin Bieber poster collection" thread on here. Duh!

Lynaron--OMG!  That is beautiful!  Incredible! And with autographs? AMAZING!  And, with that as an example, I think you can see where my intimidation factor would come from.  All I can do is stare and drool. It's just gorgeous!  Zowie!

NOW THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT!!!!

here is without a doubt my best acquisition of the year.. and it's only an 8x10 still..

what's so great about it? It shows they probably did create at least some post paper for Murder My Sweet with the original title of the book.
I have stills with Farewell My Lovely and we know the film was previewed as Farewell My Lovely and when audience were flummoxed because they expected a singing Dick Powell, the title was changed so audiences would know they were seeing a mystery.

I'd pay a King's ransom for some original paper with the original title. I'd also like to see the UK screened print as it also had the original title.
No question, this still is going to be proudly displayed in my book

oh.. also note that this 24 sheet has different art from the 24 sheet produced

I'll be in tall cotton when that happens

I need to find any other stills showing poster art..

I never thought about the Farewell My Lovely as a musical connection, that's hilarious as it does sound like something that would have Judy Garland (and Dick Powell) in it.  I imagine after the previews there was a real "D'oh!" moment from the studio.

the photo is not concept art, but finished art. whether it got printed I can't be sure.
I do believe they did print some paper however as the film was previewed in 3 cities, including I think Milwaukee and I do have stills with a Farewell My Lovely titling

I think you all know how much I love Thai posters and here's another example why.  I don't know what this movie's title is or what it's about but it's so cool so I bought it.  Tongdee is one of my favorite artists.  His work is very colorful and has so much going on in it.
