Title: Greetings from Central California!
Post by: Monster_A_GoGo on January 21, 2015, 11:20:45 PM
Hi there!! I am so excited to have FINALLY found this site (and to finally get the green light to be a member. Jeepers! What took so long?). Oh my stars! To imagine that there are OTHER movie poster obsessed individuals out there... Well, I KNEW you were out there (who else has been buying all of the posters I've been trying to buy, after all?) but not WHERE you all were.NO ONE else I know (aside from some guy who lives on the opposite coast who tracked me down on eBay several years ago when I outbid him on a poster he wanted) collects movie posters...nor have I actually met anyone in real life who does. I've been alone with my poster obsession for years---not that I've ever really cared, but it's a super duper thrill-a-rama to FINALLY have a place where I can go-go and talk posters (without anyone rolling their eyes. Ha!).

My name is Shawn. I live in Central California (the not-so-glamorous part of the state. Ho-hum... Well,SOMEONE has to live here, right?). Like many of you,I have been enamored with movie posters since birth...or soon after. Digging movies went with it, of course, but I remember spending hours staring at the movie ads in the newspaper and at the posters of coming attractions in the lobby of the local theaters.

I remember when I was a kid I discovered you could actually (WHAT!?! NO WAY!!!) buy movie posters at a few of the local comic book stores. That's where my first taste of collecting came from. My first poster was for "Logan's Run" (a movie that had great sentimental meaning for me. One day during a matinee, the projectionist invited my friend and I up into the projection booth of this beautiful old movie house--long since gone dark and ruined--and I got to watch part of the film from there.Wow!). Back then, posters were so cheap--but to me, they seemed expensive. I remember seeing the original "Star Wars" for sale for the whopping price of $25. I didn't get that one (ARGH!). I just wasn't that into the film. But I DID get others: "Carrie","Alien","The Rocky Horror Picture Show"...whatever I could get my hands on. Most back then were only $5 or $10. I'd (gasp!) put them on my walls or ceiling with thumb tacks (ouch) and just stare at them lovingly. When the comic book stores disappeared,my poster source dried up. I had to supplement with cut out ads from the newspapers, carefully trimmed and taped to my bedroom walls (junior high school years).

Once I was an adult,I discovered eBay and it's wonders...and I started buying again. It wasn't until the 2000s that I finally started framing/hanging my posters in the house again. They were everywhere--living room, bedrooms, hallway, kitchen, etc...even the bathroom that didn't have a shower in it.

In late 2010, my walls were bare once again as I moved out of my house (with all of my crap) and into a tiny mother-in-law apartment behind the garage of a rental house my mother owns. I went back to school (an accelerated nursing program---career # 3 after being a teacher and a newspaper writer). I'm still in the tiny (yet jam-packed place) with NO posters on the walls---but I still keep BUYING~~~!!!!

I've been a nurse for a year now, but think for financial reasons I'll stay in my shack-a-rama for another year. I anticipate moving back into my home (which has been rented out) around February 2016...so just a little more than a year to go.  I can't wait to get back in there so my posters can return to the walls.

I have THOUSANDS of posters.  I had about 200 framed when I realized the folly of trying to do that---there was NO WHERE to store them all!

Back when I first discovered YouTube (2008) I made a (crappy) video trying to share my framed posters (It's here if you really need to see it: http://youtu.be/TDCf3DYtxOU ).A few years later,I discovered a website called Fanbolt (a website for all things fan-ish about movies/tv). I started a thread there about movie posters--hoping to find someone else who was interested in them like I was/am. I think I was about the only visitor to the thread, but I'd update it with photos of my latest acquisitions, some nothing to write home about and others that were just OMG exciting (to me). In an attempt to re-attract an audience, Fanbolt just tried to relaunch (obliterating all of their old content) and my poster thread is GONE. I did start a new one on the new site, but my enthusiasm is not what it was (why put effort into something that may be wiped clean on a whim?). Here's the link to that if you are curious: http://forums.fanbolt.com/topic/61/movie-poster-collectors-thread/

And,like I said,i have literally THOUSANDS of posters.I mostly collect horror, but I have some of almost all genres. My most valuable poster is probably the original "Night of the Living Dead", but value is secondary to what the poster looks like. The first poster I ever hung on the wall as an adult was for "Revenge of the Shogun Women", a cheesy 3D martial arts film from the 70s (80s?) that no one saw or remembers. The poster is easily available and still cheap today, but I love it. The color and cheesy drawing all trying to convey a 3D movie experience really works for me. Where as something like the one sheet for "The Godfather"--worth probably 10 times as much -- is a boring poster, just black with a crudely drawn hand holding marionette strings.

And blah, blah, blah, blah! I know I'm rambling on. I'm just excited to finally be here and to finally find others interested in movie posters. Yahoo! Thanks for letting me come aboard.

Cha-cha-cha!

I like your youtube video, cool posters there!  It is interesting to see what other people collects and put on display on their walls. I agree with you that value is relative, it is all about that strange mix of taste and emotional value too, not just market driven prices - I do actually like the ''boring'' black and white Godfather poster but i totally see your point that it is not all about market price, but other things do come into play too.

Anyway... good to have you. Welcome hola.gif

Thanks for sharing.  Are you a member of the lifetime frame-a-month club...i've never seen so many framed posters before!  Wish we could've seen pics of your house with all those bad boys up there.

Anyways, welcome! I imagine you'll be in la-la land reading pages and pages of APF awesomeness.  May I recommend Crazy Vick's Crazy April thread?

I'm in the southern part of CA (west LA), and it too has its "un-glamorous" parts..lol

Hello EatBrie, Paul, Ari, CSM, and Harry. Thank you for the welcome.

MoviePosterBid/Richard, I am looking forward to your next auction (starting the 28th? Right?).

Crazy Vick, I did look at your thread and tried to view your posters...but all I saw was a boy in a chicken costume (or maybe it was a chicken that had eaten a boy? EEK!). I'll explore the threads later and jump in when i have a bit more time. But thank you for starting me off.

Mirosae, I am so glad you understand what I was trying to say about hanging a poster you LIKE as opposed to one that is pricey. I shouldn't have bad mouthed "The Godfather", but you see what I mean about the poster. It lacks something other, lesser known posters might have. I don't have a "Godfather" poster, but I'd love to have one.It IS a great movie and the poster is worth a lot. However, if I was going to spend $100 or whatever a "Godfather"might cost, I'd probably rather spend it on a poster that interested me more or that represented a film I particularly was enchanted with more. So glad you get it.

Jeff/Erik1925, I'm heading to LA this weekend and again the first week of February. I've been to some of the less-than-glamorous parts of LA,believe me... Although I am down that way a few times a year, I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting things to do/see/experience/eat/drink. This trip I hope to stop at something called the Purple Orchid Exotic Tiki Bar (I'm a little freaky for all things tiki. I'm sooooo upset I never made it to Bahooka in Rosemead before it closed. But, earlier this year, I did make it to Don the Beachcomber's and a place called The Warehouse.) and, maybe to the original Bigfoot Lodge (Loved the one in San Francisco--now closed--and also enjoyed Bigfoot West down in Culver City a few years back). I'll have a friend with me and will probably drag him around to do the Hollywood stuff this weekend. I think he wants to see the Bronsan Canyon cave---used in sooooo many movies! Blah Blah Blah! Anyway,in addition to poster info, if you have ANY SUGGESTIONS about places to eat/drink/see/experience/etc (oooo...perhaps even locations for poster hunting?), PLEASE let me know, Daddy-O! Thank you soooo very much!

And,if I didn't say it earlier, I am so super glad to be here! Yahoo!

was just looking at your posters, nice,

I guess its common for whatever reason but we have some similar taste.
By the way, is ALICE SWEET ALICE/COMMUNION (etc) really forgotten by those darn whipper snappers?
I love the film.
Has a certain grubby feel to it. And I love religious themes in Horror.

Anyway welcome again and keep on getting the good stuff.

PS- isn't it great having relatively CHEAP taste?

 welcome1 aboard, MAGG.

When you said you had a video of your 200 framed posters, I pictured a warehouse style home with 200 framed posters on 20 foot walls or whatever.  :P  However, that is certainly an impressive number of frames, and it sounds like you've amassed quite a collection.

Have fun, and good luck on your trip to LA.  Bronson Canyon Griffith Park sounds really cool.

 cheers

Ari, Ha! I LOVE that you say we have such CHEAP taste. Ha! And yes, sad but true, about the ONLY horror movies anyone from today knows are the Halloween/F13/Nightmare on Elm Street/Texas Chainsaw/etc type movies. Anything that is more than 20 years old and wasn't franchised to death is simply old trash not worth bothering with (yet look at all of the direct to video dreck and god-awful remakes out there they DO watch). If you saw my "Alice,Sweet Alice" poster you must have seen the new version of the old (and long lost) movie poster thread on Fanbolt. Those are just the posters I've picked up since the new year started (and Fanbolt redid itself...). But really,I DO have much nicer ones than those. But, ahhh...yes, sad to say,i find I must stay more towards the CHEAP end of the poster pool most of the time. Ha!

Neo: Ha ha ha! I would love to have had a house that could fit 200+ framed posters in it. Sadly I usually ended up rotating them out as the season/holidays/mood hit me...while EVERY closet in the house was jam-packed with framed posters waiting their turn on the walls. Hmm... When I move back in,perhaps I can figure a way to tackle hanging some on the ceiling? Ha! And I expect to have fun in LA. I'm going this trip to a celebrity convention thing (has-beens on parade---but I love my old tv / movie stars), but have the friend along who wants me to show him Hollywood stuff. Okay... The cave is cool--and just a surprisingly quick jaunt from the parking lot. Ha! Thanks for the note.

Hey there!

I'm B-A-C-K from my weekend in LA (although I'm heading BACK down again Monday! Ha!). I had a swell time. Hit a tiki bar, hung out with some friends, saw some sites and... I ran into an iconic old TV star. Here's a photo of us below (thought I'd post it to show you who I really am! EEEK! How SCARY!!!)

No, Rosa. It's the robot from "Lost In Space". Running in to him/it was an unexpected surprise...but a great/fun/FREE photo op! Ha!

You can't see in the photo (because the guy who took the picture cut it off), but the robot is actually waving his arm/pincher/claw hello! Hee hee!

Thanks for saying hello, though.

"Lost in Space" was sort of before my time as well. I didn't see it until it was in reruns. It's 50 years old, but classic 60s TV--cheesy and not nearly as cerebral as Star Trek. It's more kid-friendly, if that makes sense. For its time,it was groovy. Now,well...it does seem dated, but it does have its fans. Heck, even if I didn't know the show,I'd still have posed with the robot as it was passing by---TV icon or not! Ha!

Hi Tob. Thank you for the welcome. Thank you for watching that old video. That was made in 2008, not long after I finally decided to hang my posters on my wall---and went overboard framing what I could. Since then I have acquired many, many more posters--including some nicer ones. But, I still have posters I'm looking for and holes in my collection that need to be filled (don't we all?).

Hi Deke,

Thanks for the note back! I don't have that many Mexican posters (yet) and,as I explained in my introductory note on this link, I and all my stuff are living in storage in a manner of speaking for at least another year. I can not access my posters at this time to take pictures of the actual posters I have. However,I found these samples to show you what my few Mexican posters are like (I usually only collect US one sheets, but...). Strangely, they are all for horror movies and feature Mexican wrestlers! Ha! Here they are:

The last one is my favorite of the four. The colors are much more vivid than what is shown here.I particularly love the weird swirling, whirlpool of eyes! Wild!

I hope you like them.

Hi Chris!

Thanks for venturing over there and taking a peek at least. I know many on here are super collectors with tons of beautiful and rare (and expensive) posters. I have some "nice" ones--but it's taken me a long time to get that far. Those are just the posters I've gotten since the beginning of the year.  Anyway, I don't suppose you'd care to post some of your posters over though so we can "play"together. It's so lonely over there...  Ha!

Anyway, thanks again for stopping by and taking a look.

Hi Steve,

I appreciate the visit and salutations. You are probably right (i.e. ARE right) about posting here instead of the other place. Perhaps I'll try both in the future. I hate to abandon the other one (even though they deleted the entire original thread I had going for several years when they went to their new format) because I'm the only one posting and it's a good way for me to keep track of what I've purchased.  (I was endlessly referring to the old thread for that very reason...)

But I do appreciate your checking it out.

Cheers!

MAGG you don't just need to post your new stuff into the latest acquisitions thread, you can create your own thread like "MAGG's posters" and add your new stuff into that. Quite a number do that (http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/board,4.0.html). Rick here posts into both threads. I think most people search by clicking "Show unread posts" so that shows up any buried threads that get updated bringing it right to their attention. Maybe create your own collection thread here and copy across the posts from that other site

Hey MAGG.

Is that other blog/site you want people to look at that you haev placed your images in, your own created web space?

If so, then it seems to be more like others have done here, who have created photo-based image libraries on photobucket, flickr and the like. If that is the case, then really, that site should only showcase your own posters.

APF is a a melting pot and forum where and and all members can post their collections, so your seems quite a bit different in that regard.

cheers

Jeff

Thank you DarvishJo! I appreciate the note.

Steve, I think I might just do that--start my own collection page. Great idea! Thanks!

Jeff, no--that other site is a pre-existing site that celebrates all things movie/TV/entertainment related. I initially joined to try and win contests they had there, but stayed because there was conversation. Of course, whatever popularity the site had soon waned and it became a ghost town. However, back when I first found it I enjoyed it. There was no discussion about movie posters, so i started one. Not many joined in but I kept posting my latest purchases anyway, making comments etc hoping some other poster enthusiast would eventually show up. When the site gave itself a make over (and erased all of the old threads), I just started over. That's what that is--my new version of an old thread. While I hate to abandon the old site (which, despite the revamping,is still as dead as it was before the revamp),I do think I will do a new version on here. Thanks!
