hmm something to do is to track down Ruth Hayler: It would be crazy if she said that is her handwriting!!  Anyone gone down this road of actually reaching out to Ruth Hayler?

   Landmark Theaters:
In 1974 a young Ruth Hayler decided to get a job at The Grand Illusion cinema, to not only make money but to satisfy her love of film. She started as a ticket taker but eventually worked her
way up to manager. In 1976 she transferred over to The Seven Gables Theater where she continued her work as manager. When the Landmark Corporation took over they made her the
program director of all the Landmark Cinema theaters in Seattle. There are seven total Landmark Theaters in Seattle, The Seven Gables Theater acts as the corporate office to the other six
Landmark Theaters, it specializes in independent and foreign language films. You can find The Seven Gables in the University District on the corner of 50th and Roosevelt

She did run an annual poster sale:

Around town Seven Gables/Landmark Theatres' annual Poster Sale will be held from ... Ruth Hayler, a Seattle film buyer for the Landmark Theatres chain (which ...
--------
Regular features such as the closing-weekend poster auction, the midnight series and the "secret festival" will be repeated. Macdonald is promising "a mind-blowing secret festival," with an
emphasis on new films being screened for an audience for the first time. At press time, the subjects of the festival's annual seminars and career tributes had not been confirmed, nor had a
   number of film titles.

Macdonald began the festival with his partner, Dan Ireland, 15 years ago at the Moore Theater. Ireland, now a film producer who lives in Los Angeles, will again have a hand in the bookings,
along with such veterans as Jon Pray, Nick Vroman, Ruth Hayler, John Teegarden.

FYI, The annual Seven Gables/Landmark Theatres' poster sale is completely different than the SIFF poster sale, which is what is described below.  At different points, different theaters in the chain were revival houses or repertory cinemas or ran midnight movies, so I can see this working its way into their stock later on down the line.  (I used to live two blocks away from that address).

Either that or someone is trying really hard to fake it.  I thought that theaters were charged either 10 or 15 dollars per unreturned copy.

I bought a number of posters from their sales - none were ever stamped or written on.  I have a vague recollection of seeing other versions of Pulp Fiction for sale, but certainly not a Lucky Strike - that I would have noted because I was on the hunt at that time for one.

A longtime Landmark manager used to post on NSFGE and MPF (I think) under the name Hot Dog or Hot Doggie or some such.  I'm sure that he knew Ruth very well.

At the time of the Pulp Fiction recall, I was told by two sources that the local Landmark theaters actual did send the bulk of their posters back, desperately not wanting to be charged for them.

This is all about the Seattle International Film Festival...

I just went to this year's Landmark poster sale at the Seven Gables about three weeks ago, so it's funny I should see it mentioned here.  This year, there seemed to be far fewer titles available than in years past.  Many of the Landmark locations in Seattle have been sold to other operators over the past couple of years, so I assume they are not getting as many posters due to having fewer total screens to show films.

I first went to the annual sale in 2007, I think.  Probably the oldest posters I have bought there were from 2000 or so.  None of the posters I purchased have ever been stamped or marked, but it's possible they did that in the '90s.
Title: Re: January 2015
Post by: archie leach on January 04, 2015, 08:33:22 PM
I have not been in years, although it was always a fun mad scramble to find what you were looking for.  I went several times throughout the 90's, including '94 and '95 when the non-lucky Pulp Fictions were originally for sale.  Whatever doesn't sell gets held over for the sale the next year, so they usually have a 2 year window of titles, except for the big sellers.

I USED to be like that, but they really can be great. In fact thats what I am mainly buying lately.

Cheap(or can be) easy to frame, and either a great scene from the film, or a behind the scenes or publicity still is also nice.

Wait for my next SHOW US YOUR WALL, its gonna be a pip

NOOOOoooooo I can collect anything more!!!!! At least not until after the wedding.  ;D

Actually came close to bidding on a still of Olivia de Havilland from Robin Hood, one of my all time favorites, in the last HA auction but I stopped myself plus it went well above what I wanted to spend.

Tin Tan en la Habana, by Cabral (1953)
Interestingly, "Tin Tan en la Habana" was an alternate title for "El Mariachi Desconocido".  Cabral designed posters for both titles.  I already had "El Mariachi Desconocido", and included the photo at the bottom for comparison.  Both posters show Tin Tan in a festive mood with his arm around a lady (or ladies), but the styles of the caricatures are quite different.

I am glad to see so many appreciators of the Cabrals!  Here is another recent acquisition, my first and so far only Mexican window card:

Algo flota sobre el agua (1948), by Jose Espert
This is identical artwork to the one sheet.  I would be curious if anyone else has any Mexican window cards.  I have seen a few floating around for '60s-'70s titles but they seem pretty darn uncommon for the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema.  I have to imagine they were made for only a small minority of the films.  Perhaps this qualifies for the "Rare but not valuable" thread   :)

Title: Re: January 2015
Post by: DekeThornton on January 17, 2015, 01:45:08 AM
It's tangential to my window card purchase, but people might be interested to know that Jose Espert, like the Renau brothers and several other notable artists of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, was originally from Spain.

Jose Espert and Josep Renau both designed propaganda posters for the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War.  With the victory of Franco's forces in 1939, they were among the many leftist intellectuals and artists who fled Spain.

I assembled a small album of Espert's propaganda posters (http://s779.photobucket.com/user/DekeThornton/library/Espert%20-%20Spanish%20Civil%20War) (I don't actually own any of these; Spanish Civil War propaganda tends to go for much more than Mexican movie paper).  Its interesting to compare styles between the propaganda and movie posters though.

I particularly like the "Primero ganar la guerra" with the house of cards.  It's kind of funny to think the war effort would be represented by such a precarious structure, but if you have read about the war (for example in Orwell's Homage to Catalonia), you will recall the Republican side really was rife with bitter infighting among the various factions, so it is an apt metaphor.

That is really cool, Peter.  According to the Chapaev wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapaev_%28film%29): "In a 1978 poll of cinema critics, the film was considered one of the best 100 films in history."  I guess I need to get out more because when it comes to early Soviet cinema I am only familiar with Eisenstein.

I also found the film mentioned in the context of the Spanish Civil War in the Google Books entry for La Guerra Civil Española y las Brigadas Internacionales (https://books.google.com/books?id=6jqEMCiPAhcC&pg=PA89&lpg=PA89&dq=tchapaief+film&source=bl&ots=d5QBxp58tQ&sig=1bfTS_NItfIgsC_SsToTrjddQJU&hl=en&sa=X&ei=8_S9VJndEPC0sAT0m4LgDg&ved=0CDsQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=tchapaief&f=false).  With my middling Spanish skills, I think the gist is that the film was often played at the front for Republican troops.  However, the final reel was omitted because the death of the hero Tchapaief/Chapaev was known to upset the troops.

Well, its like this.
I deliver 8 post offices in a 255-mile loop.
And each day, I get a few pieces of freight for businesses and residentials that fall within my region.
The businesses ain't bad, but the residentials can be a nightmare.

This particular delivery was to a little town named Lorraine in Central NY, on the southern side of Tug Hill.
Needless to say, extremely rural.
It was a 70" smart TV for a dude who lived in a shack (I kid you not).
Quite often I find myself on dirt roads, but this one fooled me and I soon found myself unable to turn around.
I was lucky to get out of that riverbed alive.

Seriously, nothing is undeliverable unless the customer refuses it.
I found his shack and made the delivery without getting bitten by any of his snarling sled dogs.
I carry treats for dogs, but there were so many at his place that I didn't want to start a dog war...so I used a pry bar to calm them down.

Inventory expansion today   :) Gonna take awhile to get through it, folded is going first. LOT of french in the folded. Mainly from the mid80's to late 90's. Rolled is mainly last 20 year. Hopefully something worth the effort in here.

Just hope I dont go backwards on the deal.

Ack! Would have loved to see that section.  Moby Dick is one of my top 5 books. I'm obsessed with sea adventures, tallships, golden age of sail, etc. When we go on vacation, all i do is play in the ocean, fish, snorkel etc.  Drives my wife nuts.  I don't get to do it nearly enough, being in f-cking Canada. Diving off a boat into the ocean, i'm not sure there is a better feeling than that.

heres part of it, I will try and find more pics of other walls (was a 3 sheet pinned up from memory),  the stuff on the cabinet is all sea faring related, rum, ship in a bottle, old compass, old coins, a snow globe from hmm, forget, near nantucket a friend sent me with a lighthouse in it,  the wall on left has three original drawings of whaling scenes from Albany, where I grew up, and the last place in Australia to keep whaling, stopped about 1978/9, and i would hear the sirens every morning and they left port to catch a whale .

I was a bit perplexed by the 27 x 40 issue and i was only aware that they used this image officially in Germany so to have a french one is nice.

I've put it next to one of it's twins and it all matches up. Of course it doesn't have the release date on it but other than that it's near identical.

I also have a banner that's coming from Austria.

This is not French for sure.  If it is authentic, it may be from Quebec, printed in the US for the French province.

Didn't we talk about this at length?  I know this design was printed as a US bus stop (since I got one from WB) and maybe SS wilding?  I can't remember.  So if this poster is authentic, it would be the only DS OS printed in North America.  Right?

That Dark Knight poster seems to have an extra logo which the other French versions don't have. Can't really make it out because it's not a great pic, but the fourth logo from the left seems unique to this version.
