Title: Did You See Movies in DRIVE-IN Theatres???
Post by: MoviePosterBid.com on November 21, 2014, 11:10:45 PM
this is one of the changes in the modern era is the loss of drive-in movies

I saw many of them when I was a kid & into my early 20s, but most of these have gone out of business because they just couldn't compete with the multiplex theatres of today

a few drive-ins still exist.. not many

We still have at least 3 in Western Australia. I went often as a kid. Love them. Haven't been for about 5 years though. .

First movie memory as a child is at a drive in (Bambi), best memory at a movie from high school was at a drive in (title not remembered).

Where do kids go nowadays to get away from their parents?  Oh well, I guess as long as it's not on my lawn...

Many...

Exorcist, The Teacher,  and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest being the most memorable .

Daddy loved taking the lil ones to the most appropriate films.  ;D

Not sure I saw a lot of good movies at the drive in when I was in my 20s.  Mostly Hammer Horror stuff on triple features.

I always thought it was home video that killed the drive in, more than the multiplexes.

First film I remember seeing was SASQUATCH , I was four.

Saw the Indiana Jones films.
First one at the time blew me away with the head melting shit.

Hmm, LOOSE SCREWS and PRIVATE SCHOOL FOR GIRLS were favourites as a kid.

Oh I saw Grease, I was in LOVE with Olivia Newton John until the end when she changed her image, NOO!!!!!

Saw one or maybe 2 Star Trek films.

God I cant remember, half the fun was my parents would sneak us in under blankets in the back of the car.

Not something we had in the UK for obvious reasons, I did attend one at Newcastle racecourse. It was a one off showing as part of an event. We had to have the car running as the window kept misting up........Because of the poor weather...

AFTER THAT THEY WILL BE SCARED EVEN OF THE BATHTUB, IT WILL BE WORSE THAN TRYING TO GET A CAT INTO A BATH!!!!!

Well, it could have been the bathtub scene from Nightmare on Elm Street.  I definitely took showers for a bit after that one.

I,also, remember going to drive in. The first movie I ever remember seeing (as fragmented as the memory is) was a re-release of "Goldfinger" (it took me years to learn what the movie was! Ha! Imagine my surprise as a teen to just stumble upon it while catching up on Bond flicks in the vhs era) at the long-gone (but it was very cool) Winchester Drive in (with 6 or 8 screens) in San Jose, California. When we moved to Fresno, there was the Sunnyside (with 2 screens--the main screen, at one time, was billed as the World's Largest Screen and some movie premiere had been held there when the theater first opened in the 50s or whenever),the Starlite (2 screen), Moon-Glo, Sunset, Motor-In (on the outskirts of town--showed a lot of T&A titles. Oh my STARS!!! Ha!). The last built (and the last to close) was the Woodward Park, a 4 screen theater. I saw "The Sixth Sense" there and I think the theater closed the next year.

Last year I was visiting Whidbey Island in Washington and there was the Blue Fox (???) drive in there. That was a hoot. The snack bar was beautiful--and they had great pizza. Ha! They also had a racetrack on the side. The time I was there they had a garage sale. No posters, but I did buy myself an old theater speaker (they had switched from the old-fashioned speakers to having the sound come through car radios several years earlier---and were just cleaning out their old storage shed). The speaker I got though had the name of a different drive-in (also in Washington) printed on it, as if that drive in had closed and the Blue Fox bought its speakers before going with the radio version? I don't know, but it was fun!

Attached are some crappy phone pictures of the place (Whidbey Island's Blue Fox Drive In). The snack bar was much nicer than it looks here. It was a fun night.

Poltergeist in 1982.  First and last.  I was at a summer camp near Colorado Spring.  I had to sneak in with a few friends because it was full.  I didn't know you could see movies outside.  A taste of America.  It was awesome.

Originally from Ohio and there were several Drive-In theatres in the area that we would go to all the time. Great memories! My uncle was a huge horror fan and he would take us to see scary movies all the time. 2 movies that come to mind seeing as a kid were The Evil Dead and Fright Night. People weren't so uptight back then, you would get looked at cross-eyed if you took young kids to movies like that these days. While living in Fort Lauderdale I went to a huge 14 screen Drive-In that doubles as a swap meet during the day. Definitely did not have the old school feel to it though. This wasn't that long ago, as far as I know it's still in business.

I did go to the drive in as a kid with a friend's family. This was back in the late 80s and early 90s. The theater charged by the car, so if you had a big vehicle you could bring a whole gaggle of kids for the same price. On summer nights they would load up their VW van with their three kids and however many children in the neighborhood could come along for the ride.

I remember the theater had some interesting choices in double features. Last time I went was The Flintstones/Jurassic Park. See the friendly dinosaurs in the first movie, then watch them chomp on people in the second.  rofl1

I went to one about a year ago in Blacktown? in Sydney. The gf wanted to see the kids show Frozen. The audio comes in through the car stereo on a frequency broadcast on site.

I grew up in Tulsa Oklahoma. I have seen a few movies at the Admiral Twin drive in. For those who don't know the drive in scene in the movie The Outsiders was filmed at the Admiral Twin. Not too long ago fire completely destroyed it. It has since been rebuilt and is open, but a little movie/drive in history was sadly lost. Here is a link, for anybody interested.

I think the wheel is on the left for Americans as they mostly are right handed and cant do much with the left hand

Yes, my parents would load us three kids into the back of my dad's Ford pickup truck and take us to the drive-in in Wichita, Kansas. My dad would park the truck bed facing the screen so we could lay out our sleeping bags and watch the movie.  While waiting for the first movie to start, we would play on the swing set and slide just in front of the movie screen. The more family oriented movie would show first and when it was over, my dad would turn the truck around for the kids to go to sleep while mom and dad watched the more grown-up movie.  I was the oldest kid and of course, I would peak through the back window at the screen when my parents weren't looking.  One time there was a nude lady riding a horse or was it a motorcycle or was it both?  I'm not sure if that led to my friends and I ringing doorbells and streaking through our neighborhood a couple of years later. When I lived in Florida as a young man, I took a few dates to the drive-in in Sanford, Florida. I remember one lovely lady talking during the whole movie about her boa constrictor snake collection. Another date I took to the drive-in on my motorcycle and we watched the first Robocop movie.  She was smart, petite, and could eat way more popcorn than I could (and, I really like popcorn!). I also have a fond memory of one vacation as a teenager in Colorado and staying at a motel that was also a drive-in movie theatre.  Each motel room had a large picture window to see the screen and the sound for the movie played in your motel room: that was pretty darn cool.  Man, you just can't beat a good drive-in!    Okie
