Ok, I'll start with the most recent ones. I meant only to buy the Sarli, but the others were so cheap I just went for them too.

Hi there,

Is there anyone here who is an expert in Argentinean posters, or have sources, or maybe even lining in Argentina? I recently saw an Argentinean poster from the '80s, and i really would like to have it in my collection. Nothing fancy, not even a famous movie, but i just like the design. Anybody?

thanks!

Thanks Matt. Sadly colors have faded a bit, probably due to sunlight exposure.
There's 2 different argentinean posters for the film. The first one has the titled translated perfectly from the original. Peter has one:

In mine, the film was re-titled "The devil vampire"...

Matias... that's a very cool Devil Bat poster!  thumbsup.gif

In looking at the copy of Peter's and yours together, (and aside from the title change), the art appears slightly different (or maybe redrawn)?
Just curious as to your thoughts.. Might your copy be a slightly later RR?

Here's a side by side.. Peter's is on the left, your copy on the right:

In looking for other examples where this was done - a later RR using basically the same, but slightly altered, artwork as the first release - I found these, done for Stalag 17. These are not Argentine, but French 1P's, with art by Grinsson.

Same idea, tho.

Matias, do you know a poster. hmm, how to describe.
Argentine of course.
It has art that appears to make it look like its from Bava's BLACK SUNDAY, but it isn't.
Its been a long time since I had it, It had Barbara Steele at least on the art and a mask like the one in Black Sunday.
I sold it many years ago to that Bava fanatic in France, cant remember his name offhand, but poster dealer.
Anyway neither of us could figure what it actually was for.
Anyway probably thats all a little confused and my memory isn't good and it was in the late 90's I sold it or whatever.

Wasn't going to post this but saw the Argentinian poster category and thought why not!

Another 'Hoffman' poster to add to the growing collection. That's 7 altogether now plus a locandina, photobustas and front of house cards. This is the only film I would collect to this extreme because a) it's one of my absolute favourites and b) finding pieces from this film is so rare I grab them without thinking

Anyways... lovely poster

RAF goes for Rafael Angel Faillace.
He used to work with his brother Mario doing posters and marquees for theaters.

Easy Matias.
Go to your profile.
Click 'Modify Profile' on left.
Then click 'Profile Info and Avatar.'
Then insert link into Signature.

I'd do it for you, but mods cannot mess with other member profiles.

Hey Sr Matias (i sent you a PM, last night, too).

Does anyone know or recognize this signature/mark of this Argentine artist? Or know who it is?

I recognize the Greek Omega sign, and what looks like a W within that.

Thanks in advance.  :)

Got the message Jeff, but we were celebrating my older daughter's birthday...

That signature is one of the greatest mysteries in argentinean poster history, for those who care (me and a couple more, apparently  :D)
I have no idea who it represents. I recall seeing it in posters that already have an artist signature, so I always thought it belonged to the litographer.
Can't tell you more than that...

Thanks, Matias. Helpful as always. I appreciate it.

I thought because it was inscribed in the actual plate, rather than on the border, it might be the artist's mark.  dontknow.gif

Hey Matias, Ive always wondered-- Are these posters first releases? The reason I ask, is them both having been done in monochrome. Argentina did such beautifully rendered, multi-colored stone litho posters in the 30s, 40s 50s etc.

If these are 1st releases, have you ever read or learned why each was done in just the the one color and with art that isn't as detailed?

(Just little side observations: It is interesting, too, that the DRAC poster doesn't have the Universal logo or any production credits, aside from the listed actors).

I wonder the same Jeff... The most important reason I believe they're first releases is that full color version are yet to be seen.  :D
One of the reasons the Dracula has a monochrome poster could be that Universal didn't think local audiences would fill up theaters to see a horror film, so they decided to not spend a lot on promotion.
Given it WAS a hit not only here but worldwide, that clearly changed after Dracula. Local posters for 30s Uni-horror films (Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and The Raven to name a few) are full color.
The "Universal Pictures Corp. of Argentina" is the denomination the studio had locally in the early 30s. It was changed to Universal films of Argentina S.A. in the 40s.
The reason the Wolfman was made monochrome, could be also that Universal was not financially strong at the start of the 40s decade...

Hey Matias,

Once again, thank you. I love reading and learning about all of this poster history. It's fascinating.  :D

As you said, The Raven, BOF, and FRANKIE were done in  color, with beautifully rendered artwork, and even going back, a little further, is the classic OS for 1927's London After Midnight, thought that was MGM.

cheers again!

Post by: erik1925 on November 08, 2015, 01:08:52 PM
Matias, is it also possible that Uni-Argentina decided not to spend as much on advertising for the Spanish version of Dracula? Again, just tossing out a thought, here.

It would certainly seem detrimental to the studio, considering where that poster was being used, tho.  dontknow.gif

LOL. nah.. it's all good!   thumbsup.gif

Plus, I was going off your other comment suggested that because it was a horror film, too, that might have been why the ad/marketing budget wasnt as high:

"One of the reasons the Dracula has a monochrome poster could be that Universal didn't think local audiences would fill up theaters to see a horror film, so they decided to not spend a lot on promotion."

Arg. OS for the Austrian film called Noch Minderjährig (1957) aka Under 18 (in English speaking countries).

Adding it to this thread, too, with closeup pics of the 2 logos on the poster. Europa Films was the Brazilian-based distributor who handled the film in South America and Sascha (Sascha-Film) was the Austrian film production company that produced the film (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sascha-Film), along with producer (and actress/star of the film) Paula Wessely.

Artist possibly ID'd? Im not sure but I thought it worth tossing out there. I have a couple Arg. OS that bear this mark, which could be the artist's mark:

My detail pic. The poster has no artist's signature, just the same, "Omega-W" mark (full image is here: http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,8935.msg191013.html#msg191013)

I recently came across another Arg. poster from the 1940s that bore this same mark AND was also signed by the artist, whose last name was Moraga. Perhaps this is the same artist? I dont know, but perhaps it could be?  dontknow.gif

More sherlocking needed.  sherlockholmes.gif

Here are a couple closeup images:

Other Moraga posters are shown here but I dont know if the small W-Omega looking mark is on any of them:

Title: Re: Argentinean Posters
Post by: erik1925 on May 07, 2017, 01:55:08 AM
It very well could be a lithographer's mark. Dunno.  dontknow.gif

It would be great to figure it out for certain, as the symbol itself is very cool looking.

With it appearing on a good number of posters from various studios (meaning film releases from differing studios), one would think that this mark could be identified. Yet another, potential poster mystery to be solved.

Mondo Hazardo and his lovely wife, E Hazardo, stopped by for a visit today on their music and poster tour of the southern U.S.  Frankenstein's monster showed up as well by way of Argentina!  The super antique mall hunter Kev and his wife the Devine Ms. M joined in the fun. A great time was had by all looking at posters, stills, and eating great homemade mushroom lasagna, apple pie, and drinking local brew.

Hey okie,

I found an image of your same poster online, for BoF.

Are the colors on your copy just as vivid? Or has this image I found been "boosted a bit?"

Yep, this is the exact same poster.  The colors are definitely deep and rich, though looks to me the white on the image you found is "whiter".  The white on the original has a little more cream in it.

Yellowing is common on Argentinean posters. They were printed in shitty paper sadly. Whiteness is due to heritage's photoshop guy... :)

Thanks, okie. Glad to know that the colors are as vibrant and rich as all those years ago. clap clap.

A light tanning of the paper after 83 years would be expected. And I would almost wager that even when new, the paper stock it was printed on was not pure white, anyhow. But more a cream or eggshell color.

Poster images from that era that have be retouched to make the borders look pure, minty white makes them look like modern repros, imho. And when you look at posters that have been restored or had trimmed or missing borders repaired or replaced, the airbrush paint color used always seems to be a light tan/beige/eggshell tint. None are ever sprayed pure white. To me, that would look garish and rather odd.  :o

I'm just so glad this Bride of Frankenstein poster made it through time and into our home!  We'll make the supper, Matias and Jeff.  When are you coming to visit?

In looking at the large image I found, those borders are also a nice tan color, and no where near pure white (so at least we know that it wasnt incorrectly tweaked with, "bleached" & whitened in some software program.  whew.gif   thumbsup.gif

Hey Okie,

When I first go this, I noticed that, too. But then I wondered if maybe what was being shown were the Monster's heavy, or more closed, eyelids?

Here's one more pic:

The pupil-less eyes kind of reminded me a little bit of the eyes on the creature from The Colossus of New York OS

So true, Okie.

I think the Colossus' knuckles have Frankie's beat -- hands down.

For the US flicker, The Soldier and the Lady (RKO 1937)

I think this was mounted on a wall, at one time. On a couple areas of the border were some little pieces of tape and adhesive residue, which came off. And the little spatter of red paint on part of the yellow credits was water-based. I did a little test with some water and a Q-tip, and it dissolved & came right off

Quite a well executed, dramatic poster, Jeff.  Do I see a theme in your avatar and Anton?

Argentinean posters are often very similar in execution to Aussie posters which really draws me to them.

I just wish they were regular one sheet size so I could actually frame them!  :'(

I guess Anton and my avatar (which is not Walbrook), do share an uncanny resemblance there, Okie. Luck of the draw, what are the odds, all that kind of stuff.  cheers
