Title: Printer's Test posters
Post by: eatbrie on March 27, 2014, 08:45:12 PM
So now that Bruce has sold his two SW printer's test posters for a grand total of $2,500, I have to ask this question:

Why do people buy them?  They don't fit regular frames, they have ugly bar codes (or whatever you call them) on the left, they are off centered...  I never got it.  I know I would never buy them.  Sure, I like rare, but this is really pushing it, imo.

What's the difference between a printer's proof and a regular untrimmed poster again?

And how are the 2 types (PP vs untrimmed poster) differentiated?

That's hilarious.  I had no idea :)  Give me a break, guys, I only sleep 4 hours a night these days and function on triple expresso shots.  I don't remember shit.

I hear you buddy. My 3 yr old has had croup for a week so in addition to my lack of sleep at night I've been with her 24/7 as she can't go to school. Here's to espresso!  cheers

SW printer's test posters

Why do people buy them?

almost any person on the street would ask the same question about why any of us collect anything.
we see value in an item that has no other value.
Collectibles are abstracts, no matter what the field.

Tell the average person on the street that you spent $500 on a movie poster and they'll call the  white jacket boys.

consider this, if you bought a poster for $500, you just spent as much money on a piece of paper as approximately 40% or more of wage earners take home on a weekly basis. They think spending $ on this useless shit is complete insanity

it doesn't make you an elite collector to them, it makes you an elitist schmuck because you can afford to buy shit like this stuff.
of course, then they go and buy $200 sneakers

but to answer the question: they buy them because they are whacked-out collectors like the rest of us

I know the people you're talking about.  I've had a lot of time to watch afternoon shows on TV.  It freaked me out.

I mostly think it's kind of nuts. Even when I bought nice shoes, I never spent more than $100 or so, though admittedly I did spend $300 once, and wore the shoes one time. They sit in the closet.

but the thing about buying the sneaks, is that once you wear them, they're worth nothing. You can't resell used sneakers.
I would bet that some of you are surprised however that buying and selling sneakers is a huge collector's market.
One of the guys who used to run a desk at my Wells Fargo branch was promoted to VP at another branch, and then left because his side biz selling celebrity sneakers took off. I think his highest price pair was $2000.
on the flip side, he wanted some Power Rangers posters and didn't want to spend $5 on one for his brother. I just gave it to him anyway

Sorry T the 😡 wasn't aimed at you. But at the whole idea of printers proofs or untrimmed posters.  People spend more because they think as a printers proof which people call them they think there's only a few and I guess they think they are lucky to find a printers proof that magically hadn't been proofed by the printer. IMHO of course. Anyway I probably state my stance better in linked thread above.

consider this, if you bought a poster for $500,

If I did this, I would be spending around 50% of what I take home on a monthly basis. Exchange rates...  eyeroll

Indeed that's actually about exactly what I have a month to live on these days. Hence never seeing me in recent acquisitions thread anymore.

I like that mug, Matias... something about it is both very rustic and primal - at the same time.
