Title: Travel advertising
Post by: Dread_Pirate_Mel on May 14, 2010, 07:18:27 AM
I tried to get this one on Heritage last week but the price went too high ($135) - the scale of the poster (extremely tall columns, small people) is an unusual take:

also spotted another I liked from the archives (actually a movie poster but looks like travel ad):

Those United posters were very nice, Mel.  I was surprised with how high they went.  I would have enjoyed having them all, but it wasn't in the cards.

Sometimes you forget what is even on your own wall's!

These are not as exotic as some travel posters, and at the moment they are on the wall in one of our toilets. Though I do like pics from places local, or where I have been to.

Yes great poster.
I have the original printing (http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,1587.msg21480.html#msg21480) version showing the constellation (propeller) aircraft (one above shows the jet engined version)

Not sure if I have shown this one (40cm x 56cm)

Damn nice, sorry about the blur. Need to photograph it properly.

Some of the great travel posters sold tonight by Emovie. I took a shot at the Southern Cali but came up short:

And last but not least, the Hawaii poster sold for $680.

Yep, I digitally covered the missing piece to make it prettier. And I would have got away with it except for those meddling kids Canadians!

Were some or all of these TWA Klein pieces distributed on cardstock (like 40x60s, etc)?

I was at this antique show I go to all the time, and this lady had a Ireland one that was on cardstock but was bent to hell. She wanted the moon for it, I wasn't even going to give a star, metaphorically speaking.

Just curious if anyone else has seen these on something other than paper.

Chris, you ever seen the King Tut Treasures...?

Yep - twice.  Saw the REAL treasures in Cairo and then the traveling exhibit in Toronto (which only contained some of the much "lesser" finds).

The sheer volume in the Cairo Museum is staggering...

Wow, the Cairo museum must have been fantastic. I saw the exhibition in 74 I think in london, and at that age was astounded. The Golden Mask was mesmerising, there didn't seem to be a mark on it. Do you know if there was any work done to it, to make it like that. Or is it as they found it?

It's pretty much as they found it.  It certainly has been cleaned and polished.

There is also certainly some damage to it on the back due to the fact it was basically fused to the inside of the coffin and Tut's head with all the unguents poured on the body:

You can see the missing lapis lazuli blue inlay on the back in this pic

As an aside, you were lucky to see the mask in '74 as I highly doubt it will EVER leave Egypt again!

That CU detail of the back of the mask is something I have never seen before.  thumbup

Thanks for posting those Chris, I don't remember the back of it, mind I was only 13 at the time. What I do remember was the Que was right outside the British Museum, and so far along the road. I was all for.. I've had enough, lets go, but my parents kept my brother and me in check until we got in. I'm glad they did, though I wish I was a bit older at the time as I'd have appreciated it more...

Very cool poster, used to own a similar poster from New York 30(!) years ago.  I have vague memories that some of the treasures traveled by train in the US and the train would stop in various cities and that my family saw the train exhibits.

By law the mask cannot leave Egypt now.  Gotta go to Egypt to see it.

Most people think that Howard Carter randomly found King Tut's tomb but he actually was specifically looking for it for five years.  They estimate about 40% of the "treasures" were stolen in antiquity.  A miracle the rest were never pilfered....

We have a wonderful selection of 199 vintage travel posters ending TOMORROW NIGHT, Thursday, October 18th beginning at 7 PM CST.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR INCREDIBLE DEALS ON GREAT TRAVEL POSTERS, THEN LOOK  NO FURTHER! I JUST LOOKED OVER THE 199 OF THEM ENDING TONIGHT, AND I SAW LOTS AND LOTS OF REALLY WILDLY UNDER-PRICED ITEMS (a large number of them are well under what you would expect repros of them to be listed at, so those of you looking for great deals need to take advantage of this, because you likely won't again see an assortment of travel posters like these for quite some time!).

Of course there are also some really wonderful ones that are priced between $100 and $400 (as of right now), but even those are mostly far under what dealers of such posters would ask for them (the ones you can find for sale anywhere!).

We have 800 "special" rolled posters (movie-related & non-movie including many travel & war posters, plus much more) at auction, and they start to end TOMORROW NIGHT, Thursday, October 18th at 7 PM CST.

You can go here to see ALL the posters ending tonight, or you can see just the 199 travel posters here: http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/search/travel/sort/1/14.html

Very cool poster and even from my hometown of Salt Lake City. Park City and Alta are two very neat places to go as well if you love to ski or snowboard. (http://i691.photobucket.com/albums/vv275/Forty_Candles/2012/SaltLakeCity-AmericanAirlines1969_zps5d03313e.jpg)

I've been busy busy busy rounding up and digitally repairing exceptional travel and tourism posters.  They are scattered all over the Internet and high quality images are few and far between.  Here's a temporary showcase of some of the best HQs:

http://moviepostercollectors.com/Images/Travel/index.html

Here is my favorite so far:

The above original has 1000+ defects/scratches when viewed at full resolution (7000 pixels).  Here are my finals versions, including a yellow variant:

OK, I've now spent 60+ hours rounding/fixing up 250 HQ (at least 1000 pixels vertical) travel poster images from all over the Internet.  Click on the below image to go to the final gallery.  It should take a couple of minutes to fully load. Place your cursor above any particular image and it will expand to 800 pixels and then a slideshow will start if you hold the cursor there.  The image will change every three seconds in slideshow mode.

(http://www.posternirvana.com/0DNE2/2013-12/Travel-posters.jpg) (http://www.posternirvana.com/moviepostercollectors/Images/Travel/index.html)

The best resources for travel posters are:

Fly Now! The National Air and Space Museum Poster Collection - by far the best source for large images but most of the pics needed a lot of repair work:

http://airandspace.si.edu/collections/group/fly-now

The Digital Poster Collection - by far the most pictures (many small however) and information from many obscure airlines:

http://digitalpostercollection.com/travel/airlines/

The Library of Congress - unfortunately you can't download any large 1923+ images unless you are at LOC:

http://www.loc.gov/pictures/search/?q=travel%20poster&st=gallery

Many dealers sell these but this is the best IMO:

http://www.samuelowengallery.com/home.php?cat=100006

Here are the auction listings on US Ebay for travel posters - typically much cheaper than dealers:

I see this as the future of collecting. "My virtual collection is bigger than yours".

Far less expensive, and no worries about damaged packages!

I think of it as "I've blown 20 times more money on physical posters than I should have and therefore will create a digital collection to stop the financial pain!"

Nice pickups.

Travel posters, especially by David Klein, really stand out. This particular version of his "Egypt" poster is a later re-issue/re-printing with a more sleek, generic, modern plane image flying overhead. I actually saw this poster on Antiques Roadshow a year or so ago, and the appraiser explained this to the owner of that poster, as well.

Still such great imagery, especially for those that love the Egyptian backdrop (like me).  ;D

Here is the original, c. 1960 version of this poster. The plane in the sky is much more detailed, of the period and specific. The text at the bottom also varies slightly:

Thanks for showing that comparison Jeff.  I was aware of both versions and of course believed the second to be older - however, I thought 60s for the top version (with the sleek jet) and 50s for the below version.

Did your searching reveal anything on from when the "sleek jet" version dates if it is not 1960s?
Title: Re: Travel advertising
Post by: Bruce on February 11, 2014, 11:45:32 PM
Actually, there are between three and five different versions of each, with the plane changing, but the rest mostly the same.

All things considered I guess I'd prefer the older propeller plane version but the generic white jet is shown on most TWA posters and is somewhat less distracting from the scenery.

Chris, from what I have read so far, the "sleak jet" version was also done in 1960's-- the mid-60's was suggested. And with that kind of jet logo, it kept the poster looking current, so I can see why TWA would have opted for an image less design-specific.

The Miami Herald

35-year-old Miami tourism poster still too racy for censors

A poster created for the predecessor to the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau 35 years ago is still too risqué for some media outlets — including Facebook.

In 1979, Miami advertising firm Beber Silverstein & Partners created the iconic poster, “Miami. See it like a native,” which depicted the naked back of a female snorkeler. The Dade County Commission censored the poster for its nudity and perceived sexism, and in 1981, paid $100 to shred 18,000 of 22,000 copies. Some posters, mailed before the ruling, have become collectors items on eBay and currently fetch up to $700.

“It helped put us on the map back in the day,” said Christine Bucan, senior vice president at the ad agency, now called Beber Silverstein Group.

As part of its self-promotion efforts, Beber Silverstein posted a photo of the poster Thursday on its Facebook page during the site’s “Throwback Thursday” initiative. The agency planned to pay $30 a day as a “boost post” on Facebook, to advertise the posting to a wider audience beyond its fan base.

“It helps get new fans and get the word out there,” said Joe Perz, the agency’s creative director. “We use it to show older ads and show our history.” Last week, he posted a Leona Helmsley ad, and before that, one from a Sofia Loren cologne campaign.

But this time, Facebook rejected the paid advertising, saying it did not meet its guidelines. “Your ad wasn’t approved because your image is overly sexual, implies nudity, shows excessive amounts of skin or cleavage, or focuses unnecessarily on body parts,” Facebook’s ads team wrote. It still allowed Beber Silverstein to keep the photo on its own page.

Elaine Silverstein, the agency’s founder and chairman, said she finds it bizarre, “when you see so much more flagrant displays of female flesh.” And there is not even anyone at Facebook to call to discuss it, she said.

“It was the right message then and it is the right message now, and it is crazy, just surreal, that some unknown person sits in an office somewhere and says ‘No, that is something that is prurient,’ ” Silverstein said. “I don’t get it. I didn’t get it 35 years ago, and I certainly don’t get it now.”

After years of waiting, I finally found the Vienna travel poster I'd long been lusting after. Couldn't be happier!

Monocle, is the building portrayed in your poster still standing and in existence? (did it survive the war?)

What a beautiful litho.. it looks top shelf!  clap clap

Yes the Opera House is still there in all it's glory, and the modern view has hardly changed at all...

Vienna is a wonderful city Jeff. I you haven't been, I strongly suggest you go. I think I've visited five times now and intend to revisit next year. The last week of November/ first week of December is a splendid time to visit. You get the the Imperial grandeur of the city and the Christmas Markets too. And of course you also have the 'Third Man ' museum. If you love the film as I do, then that is a treat.

What a great museum, to focus on The 3rd Man. And no, Nick, i have never been, but would love to see it some time.

The city looks splendid, so full of rich history, and, of course, once I had seen Amadeus, too, that solidified my desire to want to travel there, and spend some time wandering its streets, at some point.

It's the same for many cities in Europe and wanting to see them. The historical and architectural aspects all fascinate me, since we are all so "new" over here.

Best of the bunch:

I would pick the TWA Greece, as I collect TWA posters with the older propeller driven Constellations. The posters with the jet planes you can consider many as re-issues as they originally showed the prop planes but were updated with the jet planes.

Last post 'bout my inconsistently-poster-disdaining 29yo female cousin:

A few years ago, I saw some horrendous-quality repro Hawaii travel posters at the Air and Space Museum in DC. Obviously the museum staff found some small images of 1950s-1970s travel posters and incompetently "blew them up" and printed them up for literally many many thousands of visitors to "enjoy."

Mightily miffed, I looked high and low on the Internet and found images of 397 decent(ish) travel posters, properly "blew them up" with Alien Skin Blow-Up software and spent many hours digitally repairing ALL of them (many were significantly aged/torn/dirty/etc.).I deposited them here:

https://www.facebook.com/pg/MoviePosterCollectors/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1428399510777321 (https://www.facebook.com/pg/MoviePosterCollectors/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1428399510777321)

And then moved on....

*****

So yesterday I recalled that cuz had worked for eBay (???) in France. So I sent her these images (in XL size):

Crickets? Nope, surprisingly an hour later she replied

She wanted a 24x36 (150 dpi) image of this:
