Title: Forum Version Upgrade
Post by: 50s on January 25, 2014, 12:48:40 AM
Maybe time to consider an upgrade of the forum software from version 1.1.19 to 2.0.x before an outage/problem happens and the forum is left without any support, except for upgrading.

Anyone feel comfortable offering this kind of help to the Admins before things go pear shape? Backing up the site and going through the upgrade process?

Here is an email I got today:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SMF 2.0.7 Released
Simple Machines is pleased to announce that it has released an new patch to the Simple Machines Forum 2.0.x release line. This brings our released version to SMF 2.0.7.
You can view the full announcement, including download links, here:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=517205.msg3658547#msg3658547
Unlike previous patches, this is a bug fix release, not a security release. This does not detract from the importance of installing this release. Although a number of other defects have been remedied, the primary update of this patch brings full compatibility for PHP 5.5, which is becoming a more common problem, as hosts are now beginning more widespread adoption.
Users of the 1.1.x versions should be aware that some of the issues which are fixed in 2.0.7 are still present in 1.1.x. Given some of the issues facing PHP applications on PHP 5.5+, providing full support for 1.1.x will not be entirely possible, as some of the features being deprecated from the standard PHP installation cannot be replaced either manually or in a patch in the 1.1.x line.  In any case, 2.1 is in heavy development - once 2.1 is declared stable, 1.1 will be completely unsupported. As such, we would encourage you to consider migrating to the 2.0.x release line - we will offer what support we can to those preparing to upgrade.
If you are running version 2.0.6, you can update your forum to version 2.0.7 using the package manager. As usual, you should see the upgrade notification in the Admin panel and in the package manager, which will allow you to download and install the patch seamlessly.  If you don't see the notification about the update, please run the scheduled task "Fetch Simple Machines files".  You can also download the patch for 2.0.7 from the customize site (http://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/) by downloading the: smf_patch_2.0.7.tar.gz patch file, and then installing it from the package manager, like any other mod package.
If you use older versions of SMF, you can upgrade by using the full upgrade archive for version 2.0.7 from the downloads page here:
http://download.simplemachines.org/
Be aware that using this upgrade method will require you to reinstall your mods with ones designed for the 2.0.x line
You can also view the change log for the latest release, as usual, on the downloads page: http://download.simplemachines.org/
If you are having problems downloading the patch from the admin panel, you can download the package from the upgrade patches page (http://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/) and install it like a mod, as instructed above.
Please refer to the Online Manual for more details about:
* Upgrading: http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Upgrading
* Patching: http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Patching
Please do not reply to this email for support requests, or use the release topic for support requests.  You will receive a much quicker and better response by posting in the relevant support board on our community at: http://www.simplemachines.org/community
Thank you for using SMF! :)
Kind regards,
Simple Machines Forum
Steve, this needs to be looked at by T & H very soon - send them a PM with this info.
We have mentioned upgrading etc before, but now it really must be done.
if we're going to ask T&H to upgrade this forum software, I say we should all chip in to help them with the costs. They already provide this wonderful forum free-of-charge and at some point they deserve a little help, if they want it.
Maybe T & H LIKE the forum exactly as it is. "must be done" seems very presumptuous to me!
Sooner or later it will be outdated and need to be updated. Just a matter of time.
Not really, Bruce.
The forum will suffer in the long run - Steve just pointed out some stark facts that happen to be right on the money, and that also came direct from SMF.
Nobody is getting at T & H; definitely not.
It's just a necessity for the future of the forum.
Rich, I understand what you're saying that T & H provide the forum for free, but it doesn't *shouldn't* cost much to run.
Hosting can be had for cheap, sometimes including a free domain and the SMF software is free (unless you purchase a designed theme); updating is also free.
it could cost a couple hundred to upgrade software and even if it's just $50.. if they want financial help, I for one am happy to offer it
I get plenty out of this site, be it as a collector or dealer. I don't mind chipping in
I don't see any additional $$ charges mentioned anywhere in the Simple Machines thread, but I haven't made it through all 7 pages yet.
I think they would've stated that at the outset, eh?
I'm sending this thread to T&H now.
Thanks for the info, Steve!
Don't worry guys - someone (or someoneS) here is/are going to mess up royally and T&H will make good on their threats to shut 'er down in a fit of blinding e-rage
Just a matter of time...I have foreseen it
I don't know why they would, surely that sort of ruckus is only a very recent happening, isn't it?
The last round between Jeannie and Bruce started with all the advertising hoopla.  Jeannie said what was on her mind.  Bruce said what was on his mind.  Then others started chiming in, including Carson.  It reached the point that Bruce was talking about leaving "to keep the peace"
The key sentence, which I should have made bold, in the SMF email is:
"In any case, 2.1 is in heavy development - once 2.1 is declared stable, 1.1 will be completely unsupported."
I would have offered help some months ago when out of work for so long up until recently (having the time), but I also haven't coded for a year and pretty much lost all interest now in coding, after realizing you can kiss your social life away doing even a bit of it as there is always something else to code as it never gets done. It just occurred to me just now, as an IT project manager, my main project I now manage has next to no IT component to it... it is setting up a call center/ nurse triage service. It had an IT component but it was pulled very recently. Hmmm, that could look ok on the CV come to think of it as is something different.
Happy to help with advise, like by starting this thread, or other advise... but doing it... I don't really have the passion for IT like I once did and would probably stuff it up. Notice I haven't been in any heated debates about how best to build a website for ages? ;)
Note: the forum could be down or faulty for some weeks if it is not done correctly.
Not sure if it was just me/ my internet connection but I noticed this forum has been down a couple of times for like half a day during what seems like the last year. I assume support was called to help.  If it goes down while out of the support period, the site could be offline for some weeks till some people are found to do the upgrade.
T & H wont accept payment so no use offering. I reckon the forum may be passed on to other member here first, for the new owner to also worry about the upgrade.
On a side note, T & H have been getting pretty annoyed of late as we know with odds and ends. Maybe the Mods can bring us into line more, sparing the bosses? I wouldn't want to be a Mod so kudos to the great job the Mods do here thumbup
There was a a suggestion they upgrade a year ago plus install some mods to make signing up a little more automated and perhaps restrict the bots: http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,5700.msg109402.html#msg109402
Unlike Steve I am no coder, I can muddle my way round code to suit my purposes besides design is different and anyway there is a couple of heavyweight coding geeks who are members here.
The (current version) forum software may be unsupported (going forward) but that doesn't mean it will unstable and as the forum really doesn't operate an add-ons or mods (modifications) then the chances of it dying are probably quite slim. However, and also like Steve has, I would always recommend keeping software up to date, but it's not like it is a requirement just a recommendation.
The upgrade likely requires no coding at all, it really requires someone with system admin skills (backing up databases, configuring/installing software) on to web servers
Title: Re: Forum Version Upgrade
Post by: AdamCarterJones on January 28, 2014, 06:15:09 PM
The only extra costs (asides from hosting and domain fees) that COULD be incurred is if T & H decide to pay someone to backup and upgrade the forum for them.
One of the reasons why MPF offer advertising for companies is because they pay extra fees for some of the software they use hence why advertising fees are used to offset the costs. This place has nothing so the upgrade would be to simply put it in line with current software releases which is only a good thing.
We'll see what happens anyway.
As all will see, the forum software was upgraded to version 2.0.11, hence the new look (and why the forum went into Maintenance Mode a little while ago).
The upgrade was really over due. The look will get teaked.
Trying to remember what functionality we were missing that now should have, I think embedding media like YouTube should be easier
Difference / possible bug:
I edited a post and pressed post (save) and was not alerted someone had posted since, though this time I was alerted submitting this post. Seems just not when editing a post if someone then posts.
Nice to have back:
The time top right of page on home page / unread posts page as I check it to see when you possible president Donald Trump citizens wake up and start posting
If you are writing a new post (or editing a previous post and then hitting save) at the same time someone else has posted something (and they beat you in getting their post up first), there will (and always has been) that alert, in red, that someone else has posted and to be sure you want to continue with your post.
This "alert" feature existed in the previous version of the software, too.
(Unless it's something else you noticed, Steve?)
With the new functionality, is there anyway to have sent PMs appear in the 'sent items' folder by default (as oppose to having to tick the 'save sent items' box)? Thanks!
Hey Tob,
Yes, you can and that option has always been there.
If you go into your Profile > Personal Messaging section,  there is a box you can check, that will automatically save any sent PM to your Sent or Outbox folder.   :D
Hi Jeff I am saying forum version 2.0 does not alert you when editing a post. It does when creating a new post. Version 1.0 alerted you for both
This version does, too. I got the alert just last night, when i went back to add/edit something to a post of mine, and someone else had posted in the same thread during that same interim.
But maybe the function is intermittent. Will keep a watch on it and let SMF know, if it continues.
As I write this post, all the smilies, insert img, link buttons, youtube, etc... all icons/buttons don't work. I am using the newish Microsoft Edge Browser for Windows 10. No problem with the included for backward compatibility IE browser. I suspect the plugin needs upgrading too.
I was just in touch with SMF forum support and their team is aware that there is an issue with the Edge browser and some functionality. They are working on it.
One suggestion was offered, too. To clear your Edge Browser cache on your laptop.
Steve, give that a try, too, and see if it does anything and gets things working. Others have done this, and it has fixed that same problem for them.
And if that still doesnt work, maybe go back to the browser you were using that didnt cause the hiccups?
We upgraded the forum to SMF 2.0.15 today (we were at v 2.0.13). The small updater fixed some small security issues in the previous version. So we are up to date.  thumbup
