Well?
This will always be my dream poster. It is a poster that CONTINUES to stop me in my tracks and fascinate me. Honestly, I would trade my entire collection just to have it on my wall. And I would probably have to, because this one is EXPENSIVE. Well, it was 20 years ago when it came up for auction ;)

I could stop collecting if I owned it...For me, there is no better.
-
For me, it does not exist.

me neither as a practical matter, but also not a value matter - there is very simply no poster worth as much as my collection in total. If you say "what TEN posters...." Maybe.. just "maybe"

Do you mean monetary value or sentimental/personal value Rich?
-
German Metropolis with the credits.
If you've got one, mine are all yours, so do get in touch.
The problem is it's like the "What's your favorite poster question?", my standard response is always "The next one." The thrill is in the chase for me, I suspect that would be the case even with a Metropolis on the wall.

there is no poster that would have MORE sentimental value to me than the ones I have Chris.
in order for someone to make me want to give them all up, I would need a special incentive.
the only incentive there would be is to get posters worth more $ than what I have, that could be easily sold into an all-cash position at a higher value than what I already own
of course, I recognize I am in a unique situation.
I've been doing this for almost 5 decades and in that time what I have had in my collection has sated nearly every wish I have had in the collecting arena and in every field I have collected.
my wishes have been - for the most part - granted!

Franky six-sheet would do it for me...

None. It takes too long to build a collection, and time, at least to me, cannot be bought or traded.
If there is a poster I'm dying to get, I'll find ways to get it or let it go.

Franky six-sheet trumps time, patience, searching, bidding, etc., etc., etc.
It is the holy grail of this hobby.

You have some collection then, Rich!
Personally, I wouldn't swap my personal collection for any single poster.
However, I would swap my duplicates for the Metropolis US one sheet which we all know does not exist, or at least has not been found yet, but that is purely for financial purposes as that poster would be worth an absolute fortune! ...Now that is the holy grail, Ted! ;-)

The Frankie 6sh is tempting, Ted.. and it is "a grail," as you say..
But what of other Uni horror 6 sheets (as yet, not seen since the 30s or known (yet) to exist) that possibly could still come to light? The idea of "the hunt" or discovery or find, is almost more the thrill (in general terms).
I'm meaning a 6sh for Dracula, The Mummy, Bride of Frank, et al.
That being said, might one of those titles also be worth a "collection" trade-in, for The One?)
It is all in the eye of the beholder, methinks. ;)
-

Oh but it does and it has (or so the story goes)!
-
How does the story go?

How does the story go?
Ron Moore supposedly tracked one down for Kirk Hammett as recounted in Too Much Horror Business.
He found the guy who allegedly sold it, tried numerous times to contact the buyer via telephone etc and eventually went to his home in person.
The "buyer" wouldn't let him in and did not confirm or deny its existence...

All Sounds a bit too suspicious to me... :-\ ( Just my opinion, of course, all). ;D

Tend to agree.

I did and trust me it took quite sometime to come down off that high and decide to start collecting again...

Not a chance. Why swap for one when I have many..? I have £10 posters in my collection that I enjoy as much as some in the £1000's...

Maybe so and I love the little devil but it's not my holy grail (and I lean heavy toward the Unis). Don't have much in that way but my collection is my holy grail. So adding posters is like adding jewels to the crown. The grail just keeps getting fuller and more satisfying all the time.

exactly
however, I understand that people like Lynn, Paul and myself are advanced collectors who have been doing this for a very long time and people with less experience or smaller resources (at their point in life yet) may see some rare or expensive poster as a grail to them, and it is. Collecting is a growth experience. As the years go by and you see more stuff or own more stuff, emotional values of some item you couldn't afford or find before might diminish. Would it be nice to have a Metropolis 1sh or a Mummy poster on your wall? Yeah! But does it mean more than the hundreds or thousands of items you already own?? Not for most people.
-
I wouldn't trade for one poster, even if a million dollar piece. I know I would get bored of looking at it after a while - maybe a year or three. Then what... Id rather rotate having something up the wall that looks fresh, makes me want to look at it
Lynn, Paul and myself are advanced collectors
Oh no... here is another 5 years of fodder...

I wouldnt trade for one either unless it was a million dollar piece. :D
I would for maybe for 10 posters.
I wouldn't be able to choose one anyway. There are so manyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

I already have it on my wall...
and Uni Horror blows. :P

Well , I'd love to own a US King Kong '33 but that's just not gonna happen and I'd rather keep the ones I've got.
Horror of Dracula locandina or 2sh is awesome......but I'd never trade my whole collection for it , as beautiful as it may be ;)

I would trade my entire collection for the Mummy 3S or Metropolis 3S or a combination of some of the other three sheets here:

If this lumbered into the room, all you noble collectors would be tossing your collections to the wind.
THIS is the grandaddy of them ALL.
Sure, I love Metropolis, but this poster beats it hands down.
Not only is it an UNBELIEVABLE piece of art, but it is from one of the BEST movies ever made.
I could write a book about this poster.

The Frankenstein 6S is a typical movie poster. The Metropolis posters are fine art, so I'd take them.

A 'typical' movie poster?
You are nukking futz.
I don't think either of those Metropois images do any justice to Lang's masterpiece.
On the other hand, FRANKY does it for Whale.
In fact, I wouldn't trade a BRIDE teaser for both of those Metropoliseseses...
FRANKENSTEIN is THE most iconic movie character of all time, rivaled only by Dracula, Kong and (I hate to say it) Vader.
-
John Lennon once dissed Ringo by saying "he's not even the best drummer in the group."
If you asked 100 people walking down the street which of the following is the best poster, not that many would pick the 6S. I do agree the BOF teaser is the best of the lot.
-
It would only be a fair comparison if those people walking down the street could see each poster/image at
its relative size.
The appeal of the 6 sheet is at least partially because of its size and of course rarity (only one in existence)

Well, i would trade Mel's collection for the Frankie 6 sht ;D
-
One thing I don't get about this. Since almost everyone's collection is worth a fraction of the Metropolis three-sheet, why not trade your collection for it, then sell it to Ralph DeLuca for $700,000 or so, and then use a portion of that money to buy back the parts of your collection you like (and you DON'T have to buy all the many "mistakes" you surely accumulated along the way)?

Anybody else ever ponder if collectors really like Uni Horror for the subject matter or just because it is the rarest and most expensive genre in movie poster collecting. I mean other than the fact that the Frankie 6SHT is priceless, I wouldn't even think about hanging it on my wall... Maybe just to say - "And here we have my half-a-million dollar Frankenstein poster (Aren't I better that you - hahahahah)." Which is a stupid reason to hang a poster. I mean you guys have seen the films - yes they were awesome for the time, but they kinda suck now...
So you Uni Horror freaks, is it the value and rarity or does Frankenstein really hit the "G" spot?
-
You shouldn't fiend about it, Charlie.
If it's not your thing, so be it.
-
everyone whom I know who collects Uni-horror loves the ferq out of it
I love the pieces I have as much as I love my Raymond Chandler posters
however, a lot of the 1950s sci-fi/horror posters I have I've been pulling out because even though I watched every one of these miserable films when I was a kid in the 1960s, they haven't maintained my interest

Nope, not a bit. If I had it my way all posters from all genres would be a buck a shot, then I could afford to get'm all. I've never looked the value of a poster as a reason to buy (no speculation for me). If I can afford it and like it, so be it, if it's out of my reach $$ wise that's just the way it goes. I'll never drive a Ferrari either wynk.

I'll pay $20 for Double Indemnity posters

I am not trying to stir anything up... It just seems like every collector seems to be willing to give a kidney for a Frankie 6SHT and since it's not my thing, I find my self questioning whether some desirables are personally driven or group driven... You know, peer pressure.
-
I side with Charlie, T and a few on this.
Seems a lot of people are willing to give up their collection for one poster because it is the most expensive or rare etc. Sure, trade it all for a Metropolis, sell it then start again, but really, that wasn't the point of the question (or why we are in the game).
For me, I don't think there is one poster I would want that is better than all my current collection put together. Sure, there's a few posters I'd give my Matt's left nut for, but give it all up for the ONE? Nope.
-

Umm... I collect Universal horror and I'm not really a fan of the Frankenstein 6-sheet (he doesn't even have neck bolts...). For Frankie posters I think the Teaser is the bomb.
I also don't like the Black Cat title card, and think the Son of Frankenstein insert stinks (among others).
Part of what makes collecting fun - different things for different folks.
-
I personally don't see myself spending more than $20k on a movie poster. I think that would be my limit. Anything above that and I would turn to fine art. It's a personal preference, and I understand if it's not shared on a poster forum, but if I'm going to spend that kind of cash, I will not spend it on printed paper. For $20k and up, you can start finding some interesting (and unique) drawings or paintings, nothing out of this world, but if you're savvy enough, you can bet on some emerging artists, help them out and hope that it turns out to be all it can be. It's a gamble, but it's a gamble I'd much rather take than invest $200k (or whatever it's worth) on a movie poster with an ugly character (IMO, of course) that may or may not mean anything to future generations. Beyond not wanting to dismantle a collection I took years to assemble, it is another reason as to why I would never trade everything I own for one single poster.

I totally am with Lynn on his sentiment here. Personally, I couldn't agree more and is the way I view it, too. Egyptsmiley

I wondered if some of that material was his. Good to know HA is handling it and helping to get it off to new, "horrorific" caretakers. thumbsup.gif

I only have a small collection of posters, but, even with the small collection I own it would be tough to give them all up for one single poster, maybe I'd think about it for this one though:
http://www.originalposter.co.uk/fulldetails.asp?rid=11121
simply because I'm a huge Carry On fan and there is only supposedly only a couple of these in existence, most that got printed were destroyed.

Revisiting this thread that I started 3 years ago, I must say that I just recently got my dream poster, and now I start the task of selling half my posters to pay for it (granted, I only have around 40 posters, so that won't be a huge task). And let me tell ya, every day that I look at that poster on the wall, a poster I thought I could never own, a poster I have been fascinated with since the day I started exploring this hobby, it is totally worth it bed1
Just thought I would give an update.

Oh yeah, forgot about that.
It is a Jezebel One sheet.

Marc, have you ever seen one? Either an image online or in a book?
Jeff, no I haven't. Mr Waines mentioned seeing a 60s release quad a number of years ago but I've yet to see an image.
That has got me thinking, wouldn't there be an image of the quad in the pressbook?
-
Yes, Marc, I did see paul's comment too, about a later RR. Would be fun to eve see what that version looked like.
One would think it would be shown in a UK pressbook. Were those also put out in the UK for all releases, as was done here?
-
Jeff, to be honest I don't know as pressbooks aren't my thing. Maybe a fellow UK collector would know (Mr Waines I'm looking at you)
Heritage have sold the UK half sheet, I've actually made about a zillion offers to the owner on that but to no avail lol.

I think we need to try and track down a Laura UK pressbook, Marc, and see what an original release quad looks like and is all about. Spying.gif
I wonder if this is also super rare to find?
