Thinking about the King Kong insert and the $$ loss the seller took after holding a top piece for more than a decade reminded me about an article I read in the Wall Street Journal over the weekend on the art market http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/07/business/record-prices-mask-a-tepid-art-market.html?hpw&rref=business&_r=0 (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/07/business/record-prices-mask-a-tepid-art-market.html?hpw&rref=business&_r=0).
Made me curious, I wonder what the highest price someone has paid for a piece for their own collection and then later sold for a profit?
Not like a DeLuca acting as a buyer and purchasing for a client, but a real collector paying top dollar for a piece and then selling it years later for a profit.

I can't claim a poster that fits the category, but back in 1990 I got a Frazetta painting for $6000 (I got it from Russ Cochran, of West Plains MO.)
it was the Uncle Creepy portrait that was used for a print you could buy through the Captain Company ads in Creepy, Eerie, Famous Monsters etc.
I got it home, put it on my wall. A friend came over, saw it and made me an offer. Made me a higher offer. Made me a higher offer. but I did not sell it
his next time in town (I was living in Cincinnati at the time with my ex-wife) he came over and made me a higher offer and then he finally offered me $17,500 and I just couldn't say no anymore. I had the painting for less than 6 months

I bet she was happy you accepted the offer ;)

I bet she was happy when she became ex.
(Ohh poor rich, I'm kidding)
Hey wait, poor rich? Is that possible?

Probably the dog house

Ben you should know this already, although you are allowed to forget
;D
my comic art gallery was at 3133 Madison Rd, in O'Bryonville near Hyde Park.
we lived just behind the gallery just a corner from that street that rides down the long hill to Rt 50.
then I lived at Grandin House on Grandin rd, also just behind the gallery
-
For shame, Rich.
nono
I know that you've sold Frazettas...but Uncle Creepy?
How could you?
That piece has to be worth a fortune now.

Good for you Rich, although I like Frazetta, I am not a huge fan of his "muscle-man" paintings. I really love his comic work.

Not sure if you told me that before or not...either way, that is a very nice area. That whole section is a perfect location with many cool places to shop and eat. Some of the older houses there are incredible...like something from a movie. We live in Wyoming, which is very similar.
Was the Bon Bonerie bakery there when you were there by any chance? We take our kids there every so often, its fantastic.

yes they were, but I think they were opening up in my final years or even final months in Cincy. My marriage was breaking up, I was closing the gallery & moving to Vegas to become a semi-retired eligible poker playing bachelor
from a miserable time to a way fun time

Well the Grim Game one sheet sold in 1995 for $19,550...and it just fetched $67,000...that's pretty good but it's not the highest...That casablanca insert anomaly that heritage sold for $191,000 could be in the running....the flying down to rio one sheet that heritage sold for $239,000...wasn't that the one that sold in the 90's for far less at auction?!

Where in Wyoming? Sounds like you are describing Laramie. We lived in the Fort Collins area for over 30 years and spent a lot of time up in southern Wyoming.

No, sorry, we are in the Wyoming neighborhood of Cincinnati.

I lived in Evanston, Wyoming for awhile and lived in Rock Springs for a short amount of time. To damn cold there though.

it's been too cold lately. We've had 20s & 30s in Vegas for more than a week.
I'm going to start the Too Damn Cold Party and get legislation passed outlawing Mother Nature

We got snow where I live here in Saint George, Utah. It usually never snows here and if it does it melts when it hits the ground. We have about 6 inches on the ground. We have been down around 15 degrees at night which is not normal either. Normally at night we would be at about 35-40. Some crazy ass weather this year that is for sure.

Oh poor baby. For temperatures like that, I guess I would put on a windbreaker. We have a name for weather like that. It's called October.
Single digit mornings for the last ten days here with wind chills around -20.

Yeah no thanks lol

Well, here on the west coast of Maui....the water was warm, the waves were good, the bikinis are barely covering anything...the only thing cold is my beer...I've been living in Hawaii for 11 years now...and there is no way I'm ever leaving!! ;D

all things are relative Jay. our high this summer was 118. I'm certain you never see anything like that
our temperature "swing" this year has been 96 degrees from 118 to 22

One time in Colorado we had a swing from the low 90s to the upper 30s in a 3 hour period.
When I was stationed in Topeka in the USAF, a stationary front moved through and stalled along main street. One side was in the upper 70's. Cross the street and it was in the low 40's. Stayed that way for a couple of hours.
-
Here in Missoura, it is common to have 70 degrees one day and snow the next.
They say, "If you don't like today's weather, wait for tomorrow, because it is almost certain to be different".

That looks like Laird Hamilton at Peahi "Jaws"...the cliff overlooking Peahi is so far away that you need a telescopic lens....that shot was from a Helicoptor ...some of those waves are pushing about 80 feet and still rideable..
-
incredibly cool - the wave alone is impressive - got to be from a tsunami.
Specoli would be proud.

Believe it or not ....that is no tsunami...just about every November the swells collude on the north shore of Maui...sometimes in December or January....but usually late November...the waves are still rideable at 70+ feet ...they are towed in by jet skis...at 80+ feet it's not really rideable...but they are developing new hydrofoil surfboards that could potentially make 100+ foot waves rideable...for the most part any wave over 50-60 feet needs a tow in...it's hard to paddle fast enough to catch it!!!
-
so back to Sean's question.. does nobody here have any personal stories??
-
Several people were here in Mondo's early days and have made ludicrous profits in just 2-3 years, from $35 original to $1500+ in several cases.
-
I haven't really paid a lot for some of the stuff I sold but what I have sold and made a profit I feel was descent. Pulp Fiction paid $5 sold for above $100. I have a few others I have sold but did not make a huge profit on them.

Yeah it is a bit confusing...
Made me curious, I wonder what the highest price someone has paid for a piece for their own collection and then later sold for a profit?
Is a bought $2000 poster and sold for $2002 of relevence... or is a bought $1000 and sold for $1500 the go?
Please clarify this thread CrowZilla!

In the above example, the $2000 poster would be the winner. The absolute highest price paid for a piece and still sold for a profit.
The Flying Down to Rio mentioned earlier might be the best candidate so far (though surely the seller of the Casablanca insert made a much bigger % profit).

Shucks, bound to happen one day.
I asked because I bought a poster for $aud30 and sold for usd$1000 within a week, and this was when Aussie dollar was close to $usd.50 so, it was big profit % wise. But I got it cheap, so doesn't count.
-
That's one serious flip but now inquiring minds want to know...which poster?

Fantasia daybill. Listed on eBay start of $29.99 no pic, very sketchy description, I took a punt, it was posted in an envelope with no protection and stuffed in my letterbox, haha, but survived AOK.

It would be interesting to see the numbers spent versus the profit made by Dwight Cleveland with his collection, when he finally sold it off. To see what highlights (and Im sure there were many) that made a nice chunk of change, compared to when he bought them initially.
And I'm sure Todd Feiertag is hoping to have an amazing result, too, one of these days, weeks or years, should one of his Universal Horror heavy hitters ever sell for close to what he's asking for them. ;)

What was the turnaround time for this one, Jason? Meaning, how much time between when you bought it, then later sold it for that nice profit.
