Title: Actors - Then and Now
Post by: erik1925 on April 05, 2013, 12:16:53 AM
Time ticks on. So i thought it might be interesting to see some of the greats (those still around) from back in the day and today. Or even those that are no longer with us.

First is Lauren Bacall. The B/W is a random studio publicity shot. The other, from May 2012, was taken by photographer, Andy Gotts**. Bacall will turn 89 in September. Older, yes, but doing so gracefully.  thumbup

Great pictures.  "Time ticks on", indeed.

I saw something similar recently, with a bunch of famous people: http://www.ebaumsworld.com/pictures/view/83202198/ (http://www.ebaumsworld.com/pictures/view/83202198/)

Oh my...

But I will add, Simon & Garfunkel and Peter Frampton seem to be the only ones who have aged well and maturely...all other rockers seems to be trying to hold on to their youth, and not very well...

I watched AMADEUS (1984) again, recently (a great film, imo). It's hard to believe it was made 30 years ago, already. Anyhow.. it made me wonder what Wolfgang was looking like these days...

And Joan Collins looks mighty fine for being 80, I gotta say. And she says no knives, either. I read one comment where she would rather layer up the makeup than to ever go under the blade to have work done.  8)

Exactly. Another thread might be 'film actors and what they have done to their faces/bodies'.

Although the phenomenon isn't new. Apparently many of the old (female) screen idols used to have all their back teeth removed to give them the appearance of sharp cheekbones. :o

Got to be right Jeff, Remember Karloff when playing the Monster had a dental bridge he removed to suck his cheeks in, to give a more corpse like appearance.

Got to be right Jeff, Remember Karloff when playing the Monster had a dental bridge he removed to suck his cheeks in, to give a more corpse like appearance.

But Karloff removing a partial denture, tho, for teeth already lost or gone, is different that what Lyn was saying, namely that actors or actresses had teeth removed specifically to give that more sharp cheek-boned appearance. Not saying some may not have done it, but the idea that all of ones back teeth were removed fort that purpose sounds rather extreme (and uncomfortable).

Pain for one's art. :-X

Re having back teeth extracted to enhance a screen look:

Lyn, Is this urban myth or truth? Ive never heard or read of this rather drastic measure taken before... or are you referring more to UK actresses, possibly?

The short answer is that I don't know for sure, though seem to remember reading in an (auto)biography about it being done regularly under the old studio system, and very few starlets objected. Marlene Dietrich did deny that she'd had it done at one stage, but then she denied many things that turned out to be true.

But, given the promise of fame and fortune, coupled with the ambition and desperation of young actors, it wouldn't surprise me.

Times have changed, and keeping natural teeth wasn't seen as hugely important in the 1920s/30s/40s when a set of dentures could provide a perfect smile. In the UK at least, dentures were often regarded as a desirable alternative to uneven teeth and toothache. Many perfectly healthy complete sets of teeth were extracted to provide ordinary people with a 'Hollywood smile'.

Indeed it's fairly unusual to find elderly people in the UK with a full set of their own teeth, because at one point dentures were extremely fashionable and many jumped on the bandwagon,  thinking that new plastic gnashers looked great.

I've also read that many of the early male leads were given a studio makeover in the Golden Era which involved a full set of dentures.

The father of a friend of mine worked in film distribution in Brazil.  In the mid-late 90s after his movies started going straight to video in the US, he was still very big down in South America.  My friend, still in high school at the time, was super excited as his Dad invited him out to a company dinner with Van Damme.  He said he was star-struck going into the dinner, but it quickly faded when he showed up super strung out with some floozie -- and the 4-5 trips to the bathroom to powder his nose didn't help either.  He said he just sat there in disbelief and couldn't wait for it to be over.

I stopped at the store on the way home from work tonight and saw one of the "people" type magazines on the rack, while waiting in line... I NEVER would have guessed, in a million years, that the actress on the cover was Renee Zellweger!!  :o

Talk about a complete change! Who would even recognize her, at this point?

WOW.. is all I can say. I preferred her "before" look.  faint2.gif

I agree with you Brandon, on one feeling better about oneself. I was more meaning someone like this, in the public eye, and recognized and enjoyed by fans and the public as she was. Similar to Jennifer Grey, tho not as overt. Her surgery had a tendency to ruin Grey's career. And people wanting to see the "old" Renee in a new film may not go, or, like Grey, she may no longer be hired as readily.

But it is a personal choice, as you said. Not even a question there.

I agree with Stew.

Plastic surgery is a very personal thing, of course.  I say that if it makes someone feel better about him/herself, good for him/her.

I used to think that Brandon but I do wonder if that is the real outcome after such a radical surgery. I still see the value when this surgery is able to help people with severe abnormalities (from injuries, illness, etc).
But  I now wonder if it has gone too far to the point of being more a harm rather than a benefit.

Of course I like the fact that I have a choice if I want to improve my appearance, but it seems to me that it is a choice that comes sometimes at a very high cost.

I am of course happy for that actress, I just hope she is happy too.

Faye Dunaway, (who will turn 75 in Jan.)

Yes, she is in no makeup on in the right-hand pic.. but just showing that age catches all of us. (I think too, the "work" she has had done, over the years, makes her look a bit more odd, too, unfortunately, when not concealed by makeup).

She was interviewed on Dr Phil which aired on Nov 18th.

I dont think the Phil show had any input on how she appeared. It sounds like he took her to a hospital, too, on his dime, and once there, she refused to sign the necessary paperwork (denied treatment) and wanted to be taken home. Chances are she wanted no one messing with her clothes or hair, either.  :(

Phil McGraw is a repulsive individual.

I agree with Vivian Kubrick and others.

You are putting Shelley Duvall ‘on show’ while she is suffering from a pitiable state of ill health. Unquestionably, this is purely a form of lurid and exploitive entertainment — it’s appallingly cruel.

Shelley Duvall was a movie star … whatever dignity a mere unfortunate creature might have in this world, is denied by your displaying her in this way.

I recoil in complete disgust. I hope others will join me in boycotting your utterly heartless form of entertainment, because it has nothing to do with compassionate healing.

    Sincerely disgusted, Vivian

I agree. She should not have been put "on display" this way. If McGraw had truly wanted to help her in a genuine way, (paying  for the doctor's visit etc), it could all have been done off camera and very quietly.

I sincerely hope she gets the help she needs and rallies back to some degree.  prayer.gif

Nice side by side there of Ms Hepburn, Brandon.

Even back in the day, airbrushing and retouching was the name of the game. Her face is as smooth and blemish-free as alabaster in the b/w photo. Even her gentle smile lines have been "lessened" to the point of being invisible.

I recall a site or set of photos i saw online one time, where someone found and did side by sides of some of the great actresses of yesteryear (Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Myrna Loy etc). It was the same photo, as taken, and then the retouched photo that would have been sent out to magazines etc.

It was amazing to see, for example, how "freckly" actresses Katherine Hepburn & Myrna Loy were.

The old school "touch up" work is interesting.  Ms. Hepburn certainly looks flawless in those Breakfast at Tiffany's shots.

It appears that there has not been any substantial work to the more recent photo of Ms. Hepburn, in that side-by-side, and that she has truly aged gracefully.

This is more "The Monster" - then and more recently - 1947, that is.

Karloff as he appeared in 1931 in the original Frankenstein on the left, and on the right, when he donned the makeup once again, in 1947, for a (now lost/non-existent) dream sequence from the film, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, with Danny Kaye. Karloff was in the film, but the reason why the Monster sequence was never used remains a mystery.

But Karloff looks amazing in the '47 shot and more like he did in 1931, then he did in Son of Frank (1939), as his face was a bit fuller in that flicker.

I know her daughter and sons. And got to know her from going to her home for dinners, Oscar watching parties she and her husband would throw, that kind of thing. Her husband, Stanley Rubin, who was a producer (River of No Return among others), passed away a number of years ago. But Kathy is continuing to go, go go.

Twins and wannabe actors, the Bogdanoff brothers. Seems they made a little acting name for themselves in the late 1980s/early 90s.

But then their fascination with plastic surgery began. Talk about scary, let alone running into either one of them in a dark alley or on a bright, sunny beach!  :o

Those poor Bogdanoff twins look really awful these days, lol!  I remember when they used to host a cool sci-fi show on French TV in the early 1980s called Temps X back when I was a child living in Paris.  Time sure hasn't been kind to them!

I think time has only played a small part, Ben.

They now look like they could be siblings to celebrity-socialite, Jocelyn Wildenstein.  :o

Well yes Jeff, I was being diplomatic when I referred to time in my comment, lol!

I think I read somewhere that the Bogdanoff brothers claim that their extreme features aren't due to bad plastic surgery but are in fact caused by macromegaly (of course that doesn't explain the plumped lips and cat's eyes!).

Carl Esmond, as he appeared in THE CATMAN OF PARIS (1946) looks like he has a twin sister, living all these years later. I see the strongest family resemblance in the their eyes.  :o

Who is the one in the second photo?

Hey Simon, her name is Jocelyn Wildenstein. At one time, she was married to wealthy art dealer, Alec Wildenstein. When they divorced, she was awarded $2.5 BILLION in the settlement plus $100 M per year for the next 13 years thereafter. She turned 78 in August. Over the years, she's been referred to as The Catwoman, in media stories, too.

JW also loves her plastic surgery.  :o

Words fail me.

I do wonder what drives people to this level of surgery given the evidence to hand of how things turn out.

I also wonder how they manage to look at themselves in the mirror in the morning.

I wish them well in their endeavours.

When she looks in the mirror she probably sees her 1970 self, not the Halloween mask she now looks like. Rather like the plastic surgeon scene in BRAZIL. Some plastic surgeons will do anything for money.
