I always lay out my posters on the floor when they come in to take them in. How do you all like my new carpeting?

Great topic!

Looks good, Z. thumbup
When new acquisitions arrive at my joint, I lay them out on a designated area of the carpet, and usually leave them there for a few days, so they don't go straight from the shipping tube immediately to storage. I also like the vintage aroma from a lot of them. 8)

Oh boy I will excel at this thread.... give me a few minutes...
-
Does cat pee count?
Now you know why my posters aren't on the floor
-
I'll let the littlest one answer that, Z...

Great Matias :D
-
Oh, she is... :)
-
All of mine get some floor time upon arrival.
In lieu of posting them all again, see my pics in the collection thread (http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,5661.0.html).
I think my next house will have glass floors with posters underneath. That should make optimal use of walls, floors and ceilings (which need those spiffy hooks). ;D
-
Oh, she is... :)
Mine has not yet finished her poster training initiation :)

Que guapa Matias...!!
Great topic!

At this moment in time I have Ava Gardener on my floor... life size...:D

I tried this once until I woke up the next day i found the some footprint creases all over it, never again. My mum probably thought it was new flooring!

You will to have ask Smirnoff or Guinness as to why but I bought an auction lot of Airport posters from heritage a couple of weeks ago. Here are some of them on my floor. I do like the first movie but after that its a pathetic series of flicks.

You married Zorba?
-
Not married but the gf does live with me. The posters have grown on her...but I get what you are saying.
Her: "How long are those staying on the floor?"
Me: "Til the next ones get here." :P
They are moved pretty quickly. 8)

Now that you mention it, it IS a photo of a photo. Old apartment, back in the 90s. I don't know how I had the place to spread out 6-sheets, the new apartment here is bigger but only good enough for 3-sheets :)

They sure are huge, but make a statement for sure.
Currently I have three 6 sheets (linen backed) on my walls (no frames though)

Awesome, Steve.. I have other framed pieces up on the walls right now ... so the wall space is kinda crunched... but it's good to know you have that many up.
It might be time for a swap out, for me.

I will just leave it on the floor ;)

I've got one of these (international 6 sheet), but I don't recall all the silver (white lettering & border)... It's been in storage for a quite a while, but I did have it displayed for a few years. Now that I think about it, mine also came in 2 pieces, so I am wondering if there were for two different releases... I could be completely wrong about the lettering, but I am certain about the two pieces.
Looking at Bruce's history, he has sold one of each, although both were in two pieces. Comparing the images they look identical except for the silver layer. I like both versions. Functionally speaking, the white lettering stands better (silver against the dark background would tend to blend, particularly at a distance).
No matter. It's an image that absolutely works best in the 6 sheet size...
-
Great six sheet there, Jeff. thumbup
-
Thanks, Brandon.
cool1
I will look again, to see if this copy is stamped either "Foreign" or "Domestic" on the back. I don't recall seeing either, but was more focused on the front imagery.
Is it possible that the sliver/no silver variation in the 2 styles could be representative of each version?
-
Great poster for six sheet format....
-
Great poster Jeff, don't put it on the wall….someone may try and Drive up it.. ;)
-
Great poster Jeff, and in wonderful condition, too!
-
Thanks, lady and gents. I was happy to find it, although it came from a smaller auction in the mid-west, that took FOREVER to ship and then were not great at all about replying to emails about when it might go out. That silence part was moron1
But it all worked out, in the end. thumbup

Thank you.
I have left instructions with my son to ship her to the Waines Museum if I should perish on the road before amending my will.

One condition: you need to purge by flame (and post it as a youtube video) that ugly-ass ENDER'S GAME quad before she ships.

P.S. - Quite the necklace. What's Spanish for 'hubba hubba'?

Rosa, should you ever make it stateside around Christmas, let me know.
We have a yearly Christmas party called 'Merry Christmas 1963' and literally change our entire house to that period. The bar tender serves drinks famous in that period, guests arrive in their 60s best...its a great time. You would probably dig it.

Ted, did you ever consider that Olinka might enjoy it on the floor? whip

With two kids under 4, this pile of posters on the table is the new "floor" for me!
What you are looking at here is a stack of 234 Hungarian posters! There are about 50-ish A2s sitting on top of roughly 180-ish A1s, and a single A3 for Catch-22 as a cherry on top. Can't wait to go through this stack! Still working on my website, the goal is by the end of the year... stay tuned!

Wow...looking forward to that too Matt!

WoW it looks like a Xmas Tree!
Loving the psychedelic looking one!

Still working on my website, the goal is by the end of the year... stay tuned!
We're running out of time, I haven't started taking the pics yet, have you Matt?
-
Yes, I have believe it or not!
-
How many can you do in an Hour?
-
I was photographing front and back and took 3 pics of each to make sure focus, exposure, etc was on in at least one. The longest delay is waiting for the flashes to recharge between shots and then changing the poster out on the vacuum board. Once I get my rhythm I'm guessing around 30-40 an hour? The first couple are always very slow while I'm aligning the camera, metering for exposure, adjusting flashes and reflectors, etc...
I'll time it next time I'm up there.
-
30-40 an hour.... Your some machine Matt, a few hours a week, I may be done by 2016... ;)
I'm guessing Magnets will maybe a bit longer than your fancy table.
I may have to set my site off with some crappy pics and change as I go...

If you are happy with your colors and the jpegs that come out of the camera, then you are done. But for me, I go to the RAW files and still do a fair bit of post processing in something like GIMP, photoshop, lightroom, etc...
1. Figure of if any skew adjustments are needed (they almost always are) and record the correction as an "action" in Photoshop. Apply this action to all the images from that session using batch processing and then everything will be nice and square.
2. Adjust white balance, sharpening, noise reduction, etc... apply as batch to all the images.
3. Make individual adjustments to exposure/white-level/black-level for each image.
4. Crop each image.
5. Export spiffy clean jpegs for web use.
Here is an example of an exported image after all the corrections:
For a Few Dollars More Japanese B2 (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2019051/P7317192.jpg)
You can zoom in and still read the copyright info on the Kodak grey card along the left side! Not bad for a 16MP sensor. I appear to be getting even better detail than in HA's super size images (http://dyn1.heritagestatic.com/lf?set=path%5B1%2F0%2F2%2F1%2F0%2F10210781%5D&call=url%5Bfile%3Aproduct.chain%5D).

-
While it sure seems to be a lot of effort, no doubt it will be worth it to document everything properly
-
Crikey Matt, I have a feeling your pics will be so much better than mine...Very useful info though.
-
Whether I actually provide pics at that extreme resolution is still TBD. I don't want to help out the bootleggers, but I also want to provide a quality site. I like how Ed's site provides such nice detail -- maybe I'll provide a lesser resolution version of the full poster, and then just do some extreme crops to highlight the detail areas. So the end result would be similar to Ed's site, but it would only require one very high quality photo on my part (it's my understanding that Ed takes multiple photos).
-
I'm a bit more concerned how the site will look at the moment, as great as Ed's site is, I'm not sure you can do a site like that with a large quantity (several thousand titles), it would take too much time to get through.
-
How so? Meaning the write-up and detailed photos for each poster? I agree if that is the case. I'll likely give the full treatment to important posters, but skimp a bit on lesser titles.

By the way Paul, I don't want to intimidate you by making it sound too complicated. I just uploaded the original JPEG file that came out of the camera (download here) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2019051/P7317192%20SOOTC.jpg). In all honesty, it would be 100% fine to just use that. My post-processed version is on the left, straight out of the camera is on the right.
Yes, you can eek out a bit more performance by shooting in RAW and doing some post processing, but it's really not that necessary. Most important is to get nice even lighting and square up the camera with your poster board as best as you can. Then just shoot, shoot, shoot and upload. You can even set your camera to shoot RAW + JPEG. Then in your camera options set the JPEG to a lower, more web-appropriate resolution -- i.e. if you camera is 12mp, your in-camera options might let you also pick from 8mp, 5mp, and say 2mp. If you pick something like 5mp you won't even have to resize after you shoot -- and you'll still have the original RAW file if you need higher resolution options at a later date, or if you decide to start learning about post-processing.
As a reminder, here is a comparison of my post-processed version vs. HA. So basically I got the same quality as HA* by using the JPEG as shot.
*FULL DISCLOSURE: HA uses a slightly lower resolution image than then ones I uploaded so don't judge too much on sharpness...

Once I'm up and running Matt, I'll forward you some pics and you can tell me what you think...

I am very stoked to see these two collections go on line.
Every collector on this board should have a website, even if its just a flicker, tumblr, photobucket image organizer.
Someplace... anyplace... to document and share all of this sordid business.
Now, howzabout Lyn and Matias, eh?
-
Ted, I've actually had this discussion with my son. He wants me to post the collection also, but laziness and the fact that there are many sites out there with far more interesting stuff have slowed me down.
the "damp with anticipation" made me pass milk through my nose. So subtle but fun knee.
-
Listen to your son, Lyn. wynk
Yes, there are many interesting sites out there, but I would have to disagree with you on others having 'far more interesting stuff.'
Most everything I've seen framed on the walls of your home is museum worthy.
Just think how all of those posters and pics would look on line.
It is a bit of work, but maybe your boy can help?
Make it a family project!
cheers
-
I'm digging the photobucket thing. You can probably put a good 500 pictures on there for free at high res. All you need to do is highlight your pics and drag them onto a folder...easy and fast.
For god's sake, do it for the children!
-
^ Agree. Besides, I do think that seeing a collection all put together in photos or website helps to appreciate it better.

The Thunderball quad is in a 4-inch wood frame with tru vue optium acrylic. I don’t like regular non-glare plexi. So I’ve started using optium acrylic. The camera is directly over the TBall frame, but notice there is no reflection. You can really see the difference in the Barbarella 40x60(optium acrylic) vs. FAFDM 4-sheet (regular plexi). Notice the reflection of the door frame in the FAFDM 4-sheet , but not in the Barbarella 40x60. The Barbarella piece is clear like the FAFDM piece but without a reflection. I will get a reflection if I put either the Thunderball quad or Barbarella 40x60 opposite a window or a lamp, so the optium acrylic doesn't solve all problems.

I'm not sure I'd back it though, it looks jollygood from here.

Thanks but the camera lies, It has a couple of holes in the center fold lines and some staple holes in all corners plus two left\right in the center boarders. Also has a slight tear\crease on the bottom fold line, Still pretty good for a 1975 poster but needs a bit of TLC ;)

Congrats on snagging one of your grails, gargoyle.

Just took another batch of photos and timed myself. It took me exactly 40 minutes to shoot 37 Japanese B2 posters.
Keep in mind everything is streamlined and the posters have been prepped for shooting -- stacked for days/weeks to pre-flatten them and organized by size. The setup took around 45 minutes for the flashes, centering the vacuum board, getting my reflectors positioned correctly, rigging up my camera tripod/boom, tweaking exposure, etc.... I'm supposed to be moving in to a more permanent space soon and will hopefully be able to put marks on the floors/walls to speed things up in the future.

Took this down today, it has settled a little bit in the frame. Apparently I didn't put enough of the tension springs on the back of the frame/board. Plus I am considering matting it. I think a nice white matting would make the whole thing pop. What do you guys and gal think?

I think what would really make you KONG poster "pop" Gingerman, is if it were hanging in MY place. Zowie! That would be awesome!

IMO it would look better in another frame altogether. I know a lot of people like the slim ones I think they are fine for smaller posters. Of course matting will help hide the space between the borders and the frame but personally a larger width frame I think would make it poptastic. Either way - killer poster!

I can appreciate that. Something more commanding perhaps and supportive of such a large poster. Let me ask you this, how far over do you think the matting should go? All the way to the Red/Black edge in the poster?
-

I would not go over the border with the mat to the edge of the art. That could make the poster feel too "closed in" or even make it appear to have been trimmed of its border.
Show the entire poster, Gingerman, borders and all! thumbsup.gif

I like it very much Chris. Congrats. I tend to do as Vick suggested, using a larger frame and looking out for the best matting. But it is a personal choice and yours looks fantastic.
Here is a snapshot of one of my posters as an example. Like yours it has a deep background colour so I wanted something that it would make it pop. And I will always make sure i can see the full poster (borders /edges included). There are good reasons, not just cosmetic, main one is that you can see it is an orginal poster with all the original lettering (printer included)

Be careful with those tension springs is my advice (from experience)! If you use too many (like along the sides and bottom) they can create "tension ripples/waves" in the poster. What I do now, and this is alleviated the problem for the most part, is only put the tension springs under the top portion of the frame - this lets the poster hang more freely without be squished all the way around unevenly by the tension springs. I have also found (perhaps obviously) that coupling this method with increasing the depth of the backing board greatly reduced any settlement or sagging/rippling within the frame. This is for those that do not want to add any hinge mounts or other adhesive method to hold the poster within the frame directly...
-
Jeff All the way up to the edge, just enough to cover the linen. I see now....
Rosa I like that frame color matte combo, what color matting do you think would look good for mine?
Chris I will have to try that. As it is now, the whole thing settled, and you can see the ripple/wave in the photo. I only used a few of the springs all the way around, because I didn't know how many or where to focus them. The board behind it is pretty thick. I really don't want to use an adhesive, also I am not familiar with hinge mounting?
-
Ginger- a medium to dark red mat might look good, with the cream/tan colored poster border giving a nice contrast. That, with the black frame, could look "Kong-tastic!" :D
-
Rosa I like that frame color matte combo, what color matting do you think would look good for mine?
Oh boy Chris, I feel the pressure now :P uhm.. for yours I most likely leave it white or nude colour, just because your poster might look a bit too dark and I would want it to pop. So keep it light but will play a bit with the frame , probably black but a bit wider. Or a tone that matches the overall look..Below are a couple of samples ( the idea is that both have a cream/ crude white matt) and that you can see the full poster. The ones below hide the border which is not what you would want but can help you to see how it could look like with a different frame.
But I do like yours. So enjoy it!!!

Outstanding posters, there, Mike. clap clap
And also a cool way to show size comparisons between the 2.
And Im TOTALLY loving the Black Sunday Italian 4F on the right. That imagery is a knock out of the park.

What happened to him/her? She/he hasn't posted here or the other places in almost 3 years, but was apparently logged in here a couple months ago.

Mike logged in a few months ago to say he still was around and would be posting some new stuff soon.
We can only hope, as he also has some really amazing pieces in his collection. And he frames things up right, too! thumbsup.gif

This framed, limited edition, signed animation cel, for The Incredible Mr. Limpet that I picked up today, was floor bound - but just long enough to snap a pic or 2.

Yeah, Steve, you can see the clear sheet (the hand painted cel showing Limpet) which is overlaid on the background, underwater lithographic image.
It's a multi-layered piece, is maybe the best way to describe it.

Great looking subway, there, Matt.
Looks in awesome condition, too. (Has it been backed?)

Yes, on linen to address some tears, handling wear, and some torn corners -- the worst of it was a missing lower left corner that extending into the top of the T in Thunderball. However, the art was completely intact and in ROLLED condition with original colors. It looks amazing with all those years of neglect and dust/dirt cleaned away!

Since I came across this photo and have it handy, thought to post it here. This isn't currently on the floor but framed up.
Youngest daughter, aptly named Scout, looking at the source of her name and her mother's fav film via three sheet. Took me over 5 years to nab it in this format.
Mario did a great job on this one as well...

Always wanted a TKAM poster. That 3 sheet is especially nice.

I/we prefer the 3sh as its the only art that depicts Atticus hugging Scout.

Apt point, should have clarified only larger-ish format what included The Hug that would look best on the wall it was intended (which is pretty big).

I can only imagine what your daughter is thinking. "WTF is wrong with my father" comes to mind, although she'd probably say "You're so silly, daddy!!!" and run off to play outside.

Because he’s a poster collector.
And also because he’s a Celtic fan, although there is no competition from my Lakers. They did beat the Warriors last night though, and that pisses me off a little.

Haha, both kids have been brought up knowing they aren't allowed to approach or touch a poster if its on the ground temporarily or flattening somewhere.
I have a bunch of similar pics of them respecting the invisible barrier between them and some random poster.
So many Lonzo/Lavar Ball jokes but I will save that for another day for Thierry. GO CELTS, and good riddance to GSW, the biggest bunch of pompous whiners I have ever seen on any sports team at any level.

I got a couple packages from HA today. They hold my stuff for a long time, so I sometimes forget what's in it. It's like Christmas in April :)
I'm really excited about the Bardot (at the bottom) and just put a few more on top for a quick snap.

Thanks. Yes, that Bardot is exceptional (or so I think). I didn't even know it existed until I saw it at HA. There was no hesitation on my part, I had to get it, regardless of the price. I'm sure people who collect specific artists can understand that. Thankfully, I got it for a good price :) Here it is in its full glory.

Nice Italian for "For a Few Dollars More"!
I have the locandina with the same image on my wall. I can only imagine how awesome the larger size looks in person.
I can even see some linen there! I concur the poster is worth breaking your no linen rule :)

You got that right. I am 150% against buying linenbacked posters. I will very rarely have a poster linenbacked (just had 2 of mine done by Mario last week) but I will avoid buying one at all cost. Unless I cannot find a poster folded in good condition. I’ve let that one go for that very reason so many times, I told myself enough and got it. I had no choice.

That Bardot is crazy nice. Watching her sunbathe from behind the trees almost lifesize like that... superbly executed.
Gotta by in my top 3 Thierry posters.

Steve that looks great on your floor. It will look even better on a wall.
It nicely checks both the racing film and girlie poster boxes.
