Title: Video posters?
Post by: paul waines on March 03, 2010, 03:34:31 PM
Just wondering what everyone's opinion of Video posters is? Being a film fan first, and a collector second, I got to know quite a few of the video rental guy's, who quite often offered me some of the posters. Like most collectors I thought second rate junk. Most of these posters were sellotaped, torn, drawn on, etc no one was bothered about them. So will this make for future collectables, or just junk from the late 70's, and 80's?

I have brought this up as I have come across some of them, while sorting out my collection. I started selling some a few years back, but give up as they did'nt seem worth the hassle. Here's a couple from the top of the pile.

I love video posters because it's how I started collecting in the first place. I have a huge collection of video posters and still buy them today if they feature different artwork from the theatrical release. I'm not sure they'll be worth anything in the future but some titles can be incredibly hard to find. I've been looking for a UK Ed Wood video poster since it's release and haven't found one yet.

Interestingly I've been trying to get a UK dvd poster for 9, but was told that as it's released by Universal there won't be any as they've stopped printing posters for the rental/sales market. They'll always be an important part of he hobby for me though. This is the first poster I ever bought, cost me 20p!

I'm same...if the artwork is different to the theatrical then I am happy to add them to my collection.

That Wraith poster is beautful. I have now added that to my want list...

I believe that video posters -- ones with diff art -- will be the surprise collectibles of the future.  They are usually used and abused, torn and thrown out.  Many 'movie poster' collectors look down on them, except for those who appreciate their aesthetic value, like Holiday who has many beautiful video posters.

Here are a few video sheets that I have saved and they are getting difficult to find...

I prefer this video poster over the 300 theatricals and Dario Argento told me that this Suspiria poster was his favorite for the movie...

(http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu12/brude2000/300dvd.jpg)  (http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu12/brude2000/suspiria-videoposter2.jpg)

Alex Ross designed this kick-ass special edition poster for Flash Gordon, another hard one to find.
This is just a stock photo, the real poster has full credits at the bottom and is one-sheet size, 27x40.

I have several others, but I don't want to hog this thread...

Suspiria does have a nice image on it. Congrats! No worries on being a hog Brude. Post up the posters you really dig.

re Video posters, there are a lot that are far rarer than the theatrical version, there are a lot that are not. Some have great art, they tend to be frowned upon, but some I think will in their time be very collected. That Suspiria, I love, I prefer the Italian 2 foglio, but thats 2nd IMHO, Id say, 80's Horror and SF, etc, video posters will go up a lot in value, reason, collecting is about nostalgia, and a lot of us, grew up in the video age, and these posters are what we remember, as a kid and teen my walls were covered in video posters, standees on the floor etc.
if you have the bug, you want stuff that you had as a kid and you pay, so, thats why I even collect video covers. One day someone will say HEY HAVE YOU GOT (insert title)?

heres a few Video Posters I have,

Great stuff all.  My Pulp Fiction video poster is currently hanging right next to my desk.  The "quotes" are too big but I like the picture of the main cast.

Great set of Video Nasty posters!  Like you Paul, I am a movie fan before I am a poster collector.  I've been trying to pick up all the Video Nasties on dvd.  It's a REALLY mixed bag.  Some of them are great, others are very, well, the less said about them the better.  I don't know if you've actually seen "Cannibal Terror," but if you have the opportunity..... avoid.
Title: Re: Video posters?
Post by: paul waines on May 29, 2010, 01:18:59 PM
I had the unfortunate pleasure that was Cannibal terror way back, through the Haze of a pirate copy in the 80's. It was a strange time for the horror fan. How aren't we blind trying to watch appalling copy's of banned films.

As someone mentioned Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and I know this is not a video poster, it's a double crown for the first release in the U.K. They must of thought it was so Horrific it only has words, as a pic would be too much.

Nice one, Mel.  I was an under-bidder on that one, but I am sure you will give it a good home  :D.

I scored this Dick Tracy video poster, which will compliment the movie theater poster nicely  :D.  And I scored a new digital camera today  :D. Now I can show off my posters, including my wild and crazy framed collection, hopefully tomorrow  :D.

I see you've got the "punched hole in the face" Madonna poster too.  Anyone else have one of these?  The Ebay seller (backlotbooks aka Sabin Gray) who sold one to me claimed he was a former Disney employee at Burbank who rescued them from the trash.  Can anybody verify that happened?  It has the serial number on the back and appears to be an original.

Updated: Just checked. He's still selling these for $69 (http://cgi.ebay.com/MADONNA-Mind-if-Call-You-Dick-TRACY-Advance-POSTER-/350327876151) - I think I paid much less a while back.
Title: Re: Video posters?
Post by: Neo on June 15, 2010, 12:38:12 AM
I got mine from Bruce for $79 about 6 months ago.  Serial number on back, as you mentioned, and I am confident that it is original.  There were some posts on MPF about the holes, which I thought were pretty interesting.  Sounds like a believable story, but it would be cool if someone could verify it.

The Ebay seller (backlotbooks aka Sabin Gray) who sold one to me claimed he was a former Disney employee at Burbank who rescued them from the trash.

Funny you should mention that bit about him rescuing those from the trash, because I smelled the poster when I was taking a picture of it, and it had a funky smell, which I thought was strange  :-\.  I guess it just adds to the history of the poster  :D.

Thanks for the comments, I'm not sure.... If you count video, and non-original cinema stuff, Excluding Lobby's etc... Around 4000+  I had most logged onto a spread sheet a couple of years ago, but got a virus on my laptop and lost all the info, at that time there was about 3000+. I do need to start again, but it's a daunting task.

Here's a couple more, it's nice to look at stuff...

Ha, Yea Pieces. Notice out on Video before the Cinema... this was similar for the Evil dead, it was released simultaneously on Tape and the Cinema hence the confusion over Video posters and the Quad.

In those days it was a battle between Cinema, T.V. (mainly Sky) and Video, who got a film first...

Some really cool video posters in this thread.  Those TCMs are sweet, different designs from their theater counterparts.

Posting the same things in numerous threads is something I'm pretty good at with my humble collection, so here's a couple of mine that have most likely been seen by everyone here.

Fargo.

Snuff and Dracula are AWSOME, that version of Dracula is perhaps my favourite, never sure if its that or Nosferatu (herzog) or MARTIN for all time fave vampire films.
Snuff is a terrible film, that i hold dear, after reading about it for 20 plus years and FINALLY seeing it on dvd ten or so tears ago, sure a let down, but still it is what it is.

Paul, where you finding all those posters?

I think some video posters are better than some theatrical ones, I actually would pay more for 'some' as they seem harder to find and the art is a lot different too.

Look at the New Nightmare posters, I would rather have the video poster for that one.

Just scored this rolled Dazed and Confused video one sheet.  Not in as good of condition as I had hoped and the measurements are not the same as the folded one I have.  The paper is a little thinner also (if memory serves me correct since the folded one is now dry mounted  hitself).  The new one is 26 11/16" x 39 11/16".  I need to get me a microscope for further examination.

This Edward Scissorhands video poster is a lot better than the theater versions IMO.  I scored one from Bruce last year, framed it, and gave it to the woman who cuts my hair.  For a while I had told her that she was like Eward Scissorhands in the way she cuts hair so I figured it was apropos to give her the poster as a Christmas present and she seemed pretty stoked about it.  She says it is the focal point on a wall of frames she has at her home and when people walk in that is the first thing that they look at.

This one brings back some bad...errr...painful memories.

The prized gem of my collection.

Mike, I have them in a draw for Video/other posters.  Picked them up from a couple of Video shops in the 80's.

I was going to sell them a few years back to buy "proper" posters, but they didn't go very well so I thought I would rather keep them.

If as Ari says a future collectable, condition will be the thing as they were just sellotaped up and more often than not tore down.

Ted, I think the Mag was called, Science & Fantasy film classics. It may have been issue 3, out of a run of 4....

THAT'S IT!
I knew I'd seen it before and I think I still have it somewhere...

I would absolutely love to find a collection of hoarded video posters from VHS start up to about 90'. Gonna be a LOT of garbage in there, but there would be some gems that is for sure.

I did expect more video posters to be posted than there is. Either people are keeping them quite, or like me thought they wold be worthless, and didn't pick them up....

Didnt pick them up, I have a LOT more, but as said I need a new camera (its regrettably lost) BUT what I have left is one good one (Demons) and a LOT of things that nobody will care for, a hundred or so GREEK VIDEO POSTRS for GREEK FILMS.  Very odd, but this greek video store in Australia was closing down, and selling everything, I bought there posters, they are ALL crap, never heard of any of the movies, not one has nice art - call me nuts - I paid for them. not much, but probably 1c each was to much.  COMING SOON. ZORBA THE CRAP (there is one that has the best camel toe I have seen)

It is even more of a creeper when you realize that writer/director Victor Salva went to jail for molesting the adolescent boys in the cast.  Ever notice how much time they spent running around in their underwear?

Ye gods, man...I forgot how right you are.
According to IMDB, Salva described it as "a dark time in my confused young life, but also a time when I took responsibility for my own arrested development and the ramifications of growing up in a deeply dysfunctional family."
I just love the way -- in the above quote -- that Salva claims to take "responsibility" and then -- by the end of the sentence -- blames his issues on his "deeply dysfunctional family."
I love it when they man up...
He did direct some fine films like JEEPERS CREEPERS and POWDER.
Just leave the little boys alone, Vic.

Yeah Brude, I've always thought this was a killler little horror movie. Sam Rockwell was great playing the douchbag older brother, you spend half the movie laughing at him. You could tell way back then that he was a talented actor.

Yeah its hard to watch the movie now and not think about the sick shit that was going on behind the scenes when the movie was being filmed. Very sad. I wonder if that is why you don't hear more about this movie, its almost like it was kind of swept under the rug.

OK, so call me crazy. BUT I happen to love PAPER, so many years ago, hmm, about 15 years ago, at a guess, a video store was closing down, a GREEK video store. Now this store I never rented a tape, all were in greek, despite my name, I don't speak greek. Regardless. they had wall to wall posters, and they really were just colour photocopies of the tape covers, blown up. He as a good greek, was selling the posters, me as a paper addict bought them.
They are really crap. I find them interesting. THEY ARE legit posters, they were USED (unlike these Alamo stuff), they were printed (albeit from the local photocopy place) but MADE to be used. The movies?I have no idea. But want rare? well I will bet my bottom dollar these are all ONE ONLY examples. And worth.... NADA.
Rarity does not equate value.
Anyways enjoy or not.

PS sorry for bad pics, they have no value and I can't be stuffed spending time on good pics.

PPS ferq you all, Id take these interesting worth nada crap over pulp fiction anyday (oh wait its rare - bah humbug)

Thats cool Ari.

I can read Greek at about the third or fourth grade level and made out some to much of it. I just dont know how to translate some of them.

From the ones I can translate well enough my favorites were. "One bride for all", " My men and I" and "Come now that my husband is away".

Recently?  I have had that one for a little over a year I think.  I believe I actually got it from Ted.  There have been one or 2 on ebay since then.

Oh, and that Road Warrior is rockin'!

Yeah, one was on there that ended a few days ago. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&rt=nc&nma=true&item=130531779939&si=5UQW6AbygSoWlx9tLGmHkC%252FBsKg%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT)  Apparently the one I mentioned in the recent auction did not have any bids, so if anyone wants to send the seller an offer he/she can't refuse, now's your chance to score it.

As mentioned early in the thread, I have only bought them when it was the only way I was likely to own a Poster representative of that film, case in point, this was in my price range whereas the original Quad routinely costs a Texas Chainsaws worth of arms and legs...

I like it though, and I would be happy to buy more if I wasn't trying to be strict with myself about being in this for the quads. This Achilleos for Heavy Metal I bought because I had gone to all the trouble of travelling to a convention and this was the only poster available I liked. Once again though, I do really like it.

I don't necessarily think it's better than the quad, I like it being done as a sort of nose cone art.

Ha, Yea Pieces.

Thanks! I have been trying to remember the name of this film for weeks, just one stuck in my head from the time I saw it on video in the 80's. I had thought it was the Corpse Grinders...but no, it was Pieces. There was a bit about going past a building site? Sticking boobs through a hole in the fence...it's either Pieces or a dream I had. Must go track it down...

Posted this printers proof one sheet of a video poster for "The Girl Next Door" in the Unicorns section ages ago but will post here as well.  Got this directly from Skiper007, who left the hobby two years ago and sold all his posters.  I've never seen another copy of this, so I'm not sure if it was actually distributed:

I used to walk straight past video stuff. Now it seems there's a growing underground, especially for the obscure horror art. Some of the cover sleeves are making hundreds in the U.S. All part of the '80s revival, I suppose.
I was in high school in 1983, so remember all these titles in the local vid shop. What a classic Basket Case was. I hadn't even thought of it for 30 years!  :D

Around 10.5/11 x 5.5 inches. Most are thin paper, but some are printed on thicker card stock. Pretty much same as VHS cover but with short synopsis at bottom.
From memory the art was better than the movie in a lot of cases!

The nostalgia of tapes is getting stronger and all my Aussie movie nerds, want the cover they rented as a kid.
Palace explosive was all our favourite at the time, we KNEW it was going to be "good"

I have the hills have eyes two pictures and also the first, sheesh even the remake.

And legend I have a cardboard standee thing.

I have a life size pinhead hell raiser cardboard standee somewhere, and a Michael Myers that's his mask, about as big as a double bed. All in storage for over twenty years. Must be dusty.

I am pretty sure the ROTLD artwork is specific to the video release ?  I have two sizes. I used to spend my weekends doing teh rounds in neighbouring towns befriending the people who worked at the shops.
I had a huge stack, but most i chucked as they were rubbish, got a few more though i will post later.

I remember the very first time we rented a video.
It was Firestarter with Drew Barrymore.
When we got back to the house it had been burgled and the brand new VHS player was gone  :(

Never did get to watch that tape.

Can't show an actual poster, but this seemed a good idea at the time. DVD/Video store went under, owner had been collecting every poster for every release of every movie they had rented in the last decade or so with a view to selling them on eBay eventually - but when they went bust the wife decided to clear them all, several thousand at fire sale price. I swooped, husband wasn't happy at all and refused to help load them, wife was and did so she got the money too. All are pristine, never hung on the walls but it's going to take a month of Sundays to sort, I've got them over at a friends house who has more room, so maybe I won't start this week...

These are both really great, Sky. That vid poster art for Deadly Friend is very cool. So much better than the US OS art, where the girl in the window is so much smaller against that dark background.

And your Lost Boys is smokin' too!

Very sad news...  I was a big fan of blockbuster finally closing both my mail service and location subscriptions only about 4 months ago after about 13 or 14 years of being a frequent visitor.  The reason? They closed the one near my house.  I wasn't going to drive across town when I could just order it on my TV now...  I do hope that physical formats don't go away all together; I still like the feel and smell of a new DVD/Blu-Ray...

Blockbuster say digital distribution had a big impact on their demise such as the Netflix video streaming (view once, not keep) service, though I would say rampant illegal downloading of movies played a big part too.

Paying for subscriptions to Netflix is one thing some choose to do, but the door is wide open for people to illegally download (and permanently keep) 1000's of movies (virtually any movie that has been made) and view them whenever they like, for free.   Note you can save Netflix movie streams illegally too, though with some effort.

For example, for the purpose of indicating how endemic the problem is, shown below is somewhere in cyberspace where people can download movies (for free illegally). The green 'Seed' column (as far as I understand) are the number of people sharing that movie for other people to copy from them. The number of people who actually have downloaded that movie is far more than that I presume as not everyone shares what they download for others to copy.

The above is what I reckon is a significant contributor to the demise of bricks and mortar video stores.

I like having it in hand as well. I think in time everything movie related will be digital  :-[ But I guess that is change and we all have to accept it for what it is. I do prefer to have a hard copy in hand though and if they do away with that it will suck.

Yes, PW.  DVDs and Blu-Rays included because the terms "video rental shops", "video stores", etc., did not change even after VHS format was taken over by DVD and Blu-Ray.  Thus, DVD and Blu-Ray posters are called "video posters."

Lovely selection, Schan -- I can see there's a fair few Boris posters I still need to track down! Never seen that Krull before either. Very nice.

I think video posters are underrated. There's some crackers out there with unique artwork for straight-to-video titles in the US I'd love to find (Death Spa or Headless Eyes anyone?!) but here are a few of the ones I have collected (from the US, UK and Japan):

Totally forgot about this thread.  Thanks for bringing it back to life, Schan.  Some really good stuff there.  I collect Struzan, and seeing your post last night reminded me of that Better Off Dead poster that I wanted years ago and completely forgot about.  So I bought it.  Thanks for making me spend money.

Boris is tough man..........I have been working on a complete theatrical catalog for a long time.  There are a couple of hard-to-find ones I have left.  There are a couple of easy ones too, but I am in no hurry to grab those until they are the last ones.  If you check out the artist subforum, there is a thread.......

This poster is vastly superior to the completely bland one sheet.

I have several dozen video posters somewhere. Mostly freebies I picked up from actual video stores back in the day. I tend to like the cheesier the better. My favorite was for Sorority Babes in the Slimball Bowl-O-Rama, which hung on my dorm wall and always made for an interesting conversation piece.

Alternate artwork on this Risky Business UK video poster, with a unique tagline, the car a different color, etc.:

Another one from the UK that ended recently, with a slightly different tagline:

Interesting.  I just checked my website for other variations, but this is a new one entirely.  On the original, the head is from Carl Ramsey while the girl on the car is from Drew Struzan.

Here you have the OS, the OS Intl. and the OS Spanish language.

The Struzan work is classic.  This UK video version is so different, and perfect for a video store, imo.  It would be cool to find out who the artist is, and see their other work.  I'll have to research it someday.

T

Yeah the quad is cool, although I think it's more of a vertical format style.  Maybe I'm just too used to the standard USA formats.   8)  A hardcore Mad Max fan probably shelled out the (relatively) big bucks for it.

What I meant to say is that the price is really high for a poster in such a poor condition.  It belongs in the trash, imo.

A simple, quality backing and an hour or 2 of touch-ups and it would be in excellent condition.  Restored condition, of course; for most Mad Max fans, completists, etc. that would be OK.  It's from before the film was even released, and extremely scarce, pre-certification, for such a popular film, etc.

Yeah they're fun and many are exceedingly rare.  So many different styles the video posters have compared to the theater releases, and many for movies that weren't released in theaters.  A lot of times when I browse through some of them I see something I haven't seen that's cool, wacky, etc.

Bionaut (1991) aka Beasties

Yes, there are a few with even BETTER artwork than theatrical posters.

Point taken.  Yeah, you're right, I never think about linenbacking because it is something I dislike so much.  I would have not bought this poster because it's in terrible shape and I don't linenback.

Why do you say that it's before the film was even released?  Wasn't it released theatrically in Australia in '79, then in the UK and around the world and on home video a few years later?

You're right, I mistyped.  I was typing on my phone and was going to mention the pre-certification aka pre-cert dealio, but got off track and didn't notice it until after the editing time window closed.  I should've added a post to mention that.

Now that I'm on my home computer, I can edit the above, including where I misspelled "mistyped"  :P and add additional context.

There's a pretty strong pre-cert fan base that collects the stuff.  The "video nasties" and their swag, that played a large role in the censorship, banning, etc. of some films in the UK, seem to command a relatively high price.  I was going to say since this Mad Max video poster is pre-cert, maybe some folks would put a premium on it for that reason.  I don't know enough about that genre to say if that's the case, but I'm sure that attribute is a bonus for some folks.

Good eye! That's a cutout of the "Horror Express" vhs cover that someone used to cover a small hole in the poster...  ;D
