I'm having a real hard time finding an Hungarian poster store, or anyone selling Hungarian posters for that matter. I was told by a museum in Budapest that it is still illegal to sell posters in Hungary. Can anyone confirm that? Does anyone have access to them?
Thanks,
Thierry
-
I think that is indeed real about it being illegal to sell them.
From what I hear they are indeed very tough to get even when you are there on the ground. This is in contrast to Ukraine, for example, where I can walk into a movie theater, ask to buy whatever i want and get it in about 5 minutes.
-
Do you know why they would be illegal? Maybe during the Red Army oppression, but today?
-
That's interesting. I didn't know it was illegal to sell movie posters in Hungary - I bet if any escaped they would be very pricey.

-
For my own sanity and safety, I try not to ask why when in eastern Europe.
Seriously though, I have no clue why it would be illegal or if this is just a rumor. I've never been to Hungary but I have heard this.
The Hungarian Star Wars posters (as an example) are amongst the rarest and priciest out there, at least for the foreign / semi-abstract material.
-
This is my MOST WANTED. If anyone has access to them, I have MONEY to spend.
Sorry for being abrasive, but I really want to find a source.
T
-
You and me both Thierry.....crazy Magyars! I am relegated to collecting jpg's of Hungarian material. That is almost as difficult as finding the posters themselves. I sure would love to have one of these, but good effing luck.

You want this one, Thierry?
Sold for $700 last year.

haha, that isnt the one Ben, but it is a great Star Wars poster. If I knew where one was Thierry, I would get it for you, but your guess is as good as mine.
-
Wow, crazy find Bruce.
-
Hmmmm, I suspect there was a deleted post here. If the topic was that Die Hard currently on Bruce's auction, Helmut had one up for months on ebay at $125. It is one of the few Hungarian pieces I have seen that I don't really like. Every time I see it, I cant help but think "dickhead"
-
This is just getting stupid. Jeannie, are you deleting Bruce's posts? If not, who is? What's the deal.
-
No, not I. It would seem that I am not the only moderator who sees a problem with Bruce continuing to advertise his auctions in the main poster discussion threads.
If Bruce doesn't want this to continue to be a problem, all he has to do is post a picture of the poster being discussed, like everyone else would, rather than posting a link to his auction of that poster.
Jeannie
-
Truthfully, it's not Bruce's posts that are the problem, Jeannie. I know no moderator who has remotely the concern you do regarding Bruce's posts. It's no coincidence you don't see Chad, Schan, Cj or myself editing or warning others along side you. I'll pick this up in the off topic section. Sorry to disrupt this thread.
-
I don't think she deleted it. Neither did I. I think we have a ghost....

But, to be sure, I don't have a problem posting a link, but links annoy the shit out of me. I'd prefer that an image be posted, even if the image also includes a link.

Those Star Wars Hungarian posters are my favorites for the franchise, just ahead of the Russian ones. But, it should be known that the originals were monochrome rather than color like the one posted. Those color ones, though much nicer looking were either reissue or rerelease posters (not sure which).
-
Have a trio of new Hungarians on the way. I won't spill the beans, but will post pictures when I get them.
I will say that they aren't overly earth shattering in terms of title and really even artwork, but they are certainly designs that no one has ever seen before.
-
And I HATE YOU!
-
And I HATE YOU!
hey fucker, you dont even know what they are. for all you know, its 2 scott pilgrim variants and a sarah jesica parker sex and the city character poster with some hungarian text. just for that, I am going to send you a rolled up rolled up ET poster packed full of dog turds.
-
I know your taste. I expect the best.
-
I know your taste. I expect the best.
like I said, nothing mind blowing. The art is pretty cool and unique, but the quality and desirability of the titles leaves a lot to be desired. One of them is mediocre film wise but fairly well known. Another is mediocre and not well known at all. The third is a great film, but very obscure.

I don't recommend poster dealers very often, but if you like those elusive Hungarian posters, I strongly recommend dealing with Adam Varkonyl at The Budapest Poster Gallery (http://budapestposter.com/). A great guy and extremely helpful.

Thanks for the link, T. There's a lot of groovy stuff there.

Also in the latest acquisitions thread, but it probably should be cross referenced here.........

I haven't posted many new acquisitions lately, even though I've been on a buying tear. I just don't have time to take proper photos. This was a pretty special batch of Hungarians for me, though, so I wanted to share them even if it's just iPhone pics for now. As Schan said on the previous page of this thread -- the art may not be to everyone's taste, but holy crap are Hungarians hard to find!

Nice Matt!

Thanks Charlie!

Not sure. I didn't even know this Wages existed until it popped up. That is one of the thing I find so interesting about Hungarian posters -- they exist for more films than you think, you've just never seen them.

Very cool. I believe that the Close encounters of the 3rd kind is very rare. I beleive T purchased one awhile back if I recall correctly. As for the rest I am not sure how rare they are. But I like the Apocalypse Now poster. Some very cool art on those.almost looks like the artists were on an acid trip when they done them.
-
Not only did I purchase it, but it is my picture. As are Alien, Apocalypse Now, ET, Back to the Future and Aliens. All my posters.

That is awesome to know that T. If you ever decide to part with any of them let me know lol. But we all know that you never sell anything. So I will take them as a donation from you lol ;D They are all extrodinary pieces. I would love to add them to my collection. Wasn't there only a few known to exist of the CEO3K??
-
Less than 5 according to a longtime Hungarian collector. He's seen 3 in 30 years of collecting. It's one of my favorite posters too. Really gorgeous in person. And no, I'm not selling. Not now, not ever.

Stay tuned... cracking the Hungarian market was probably my biggest collecting goal of 2013. I went from 1 Hungarian poster to 105 at the current count (and growing). Many are for non-western films, but there is some pretty cool and unique artwork for sure. I also managed to land some crazy rare ones too of course. Can you say Hungarian Roman Holiday? :-*
It will be a while though. I'm working on an Eastern European reference site which is where they will ultimately be revealed. Peter's (http://petersmovieposters.com) incredibly thoughtful and clearly heartfelt site was my original inspiration. Then Ed (http://www.filmonpaper.com) upped the ante for all of us in terms of production value. Now I just hope to approach what he has accomplished. That is one of the reasons I've been more quiet than usual lately.
So anyway, stay tuned...

Freakin' great news Matt!! Looking forward to it

Starting now mister! Your site is long over due.

and Matt, in your pursuit, if you run across some nice gambling images or Raymond Chandler titles - even the later ones - please keep me in mind for those

Well, technically I need two sites -- the Eastern European ref site AND my personal site!

I'm crushed.... :-[
Believe it or not, I still get emails on a weekly basis from people asking me if I sell (even though I clearly state that I don't.). I simply don't answer anymore.

Love the color on all of these. The vibrancy and subject matter (or rather the interpretation, much like Polish posters do), is fascinating. It has often made me wonder how and why theses artists come up with often very theatrical or avant garde imagery for film posters. They do what they are supposed to-- GRAB ONE'S EYE!.
And congrats, T, for you having all of these that are shown.
Tre' Nice! thumbsup.gif

That's very impressive Matt. Given your background and the variety/depth of your collection you really should consider publishing a book on Central/East European movie posters.

The only Hungarian poster I have is this one from The Mummy's Hand. I'd sure like some more from the the early horror and SF films, if they are this fun!
-
Mummy looks great!
-
Thanks, 110x75! I was very happy to get such a colorful poster for this elusive title. To me, this image of the mummy is a little scary with a touch of goofy.
