Title: Star Wars Triple Bill
Post by: Dread_Pirate_Mel on May 25, 2012, 09:12:22 PM
Only 18 originals of these are floating around (nine theaters, two each).  One of them is coming up for sale - I ain't saying where/when - so I went ahead and created a basic authentication for it on MPC. (http://moviepostercollectors.com/MPC_Authentication_Star_Wars_Triple_Bill.html)

Remember Animal Farm - "four legs good, two legs bad"?

For the Triple Bill, remember, "three lines good, two lines bad."

And remember the fake is from the "Plitt Carnegie."

This "Pitt Carnegie" bootleg just popped up on Ebay, from Rokmodataol (Rick Toler), who does disclose it may be a bootleg:

THIS IS AN INFAMOUS "BOOTLEG" POSTER. THERE ARE A LOT OF FALSE URBAN MYTHS ON THE INTERNET BY SELLERS AND COLLECTORS WHO JUST REPEAT WHAT THEY HEARD AND IN SOME CASES THEY HAVE EVOLUTIONS AND RELEVATIONS IN THEORY DEPENDING ON WHAT THEY ARE SELLING OR BOUGHT.

THIS POSTER SUPPOSEDLY WAS MADE FROM A NEWSPAPER PRINT, IF THAT WAS TRUE THEY DID A BANG UP JOB OF MAKING IT LOOK LIKE IT DOES. ONE STORY ON THIS POSTER HAS IT AS VERY THIN PAPER, IT IN FACT IS AS THICK AS THE THICKER 1 SHEETS FROM THIS TIME PERIOD.

I PERSONALLY NEVER WAS OFFERED A QUANTITY OF THEM AND I DO NOT KNOW WHERE THEY CAME FROM. THE PERSON I GOT IT FROM BOUGHT IT AT THE COMIC-CON THAT THEY SHOWED UP BEING SOLD BACK IN ABOUT 1985-86, THAT PERSON IS WELL KNOWN IN THE BUSINESS AND TOLD ME THAT IT WAS NO DOUBT A BOOTLEG. THAT PERSON AND ASSOCIATES WERE MAD ABOUT IT BECAUSE IT WAS A BOOTLEG, THIS IS BEFORE THE WIDESPREAD URBAN MYTHS STARTED ABOUT LOTS OF MOVIE POSTERS. WHAT STUMPED THEM THE MOST WAS THAT THEY KNEW THE 41" PRINTERS AND COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHERE THEY WERE PRINTED. THE WRENCH I WILL THROW IN THE WORKS IS THAT A LOT OF MISPRINTS, TEST POSTERS AND REJECTED POSTERS ETC WERE TAKEN BY EMPLOYEES OUT OF THE PRINTERS AND WERE TRADED AND SOLD DURING THE 70'S AND 80'S. A LOT OF THE TEST PROOFS HAVE SHOWED UP LATELY, WE CUT THE COLOR BARS OFF OF THOSE SAME POSTERS IN THE 80'S LOL. THESE POSTERS COULD HAVE BEEN VERY EASILY BEEN A TEST POSTER THAT WAS REJECTED BUT NOT THROWN AWAY. I HAVE ALSO SEEN POSTERS THAT WERE MADE TO BE SOLD IN FAN CLUBS AND THEN NEVER SENT TO THE CLUB.

NO MATTER WHAT IT REALLY IS, IT IS RARE NOW DAYS

Completely unrelated to the prior post, I did speak by phone with a guy who has a positive original (and who knows of two others) who is looking to sell it. Unfortunately, his is dry-mounted.  He thinks he's going to get $10,000+ for it but I'm thinking more like $1,500 since it is mounted.

Is that your $1,500 being offered?

I wouldn't pay more than $200 for a re-release text-only poster, even if only 18 were printed.

The seller referenced in the previous post has put up his mounted copy for sale on Ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/150831995123?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_987wt_1006).  He's playing the "reserve" game.  He thinks he's going to get $15,000 for it.  Supposedly a few of these were sold in the late 1990s for $5000+.

I highly doubt anyone is going to pay $15k+, or even more then a a few thousand if he's lucky.

While it's definitely a rare poster, possibly the rarest - 18 of the style and 2 of the specific theater are the only ones ever made - it's still a re-release. And a text only one at that. The only people I think would be interested in it are the Star Wars completists. It's also dry mounted, which hurts the value. And the seller listed it as local pickup only, with no shipping option. Maybe he assumes that the only people who can afford his reserve can just jump on their private Gulfstream and fly on up to where he is to pick it up? He listed it on eBay, which probably wasn't the smartest move - assuming he actually does want to sell it. Lastly, there are a few other uber rare SW posters coming up for auction soon. Ones that are almost as rare, but much more desirable.

Personally, I have my doubts whether the seller actually wants to sell it. His listing details/description and unknown "VERY high" reserve almost seems like a ploy to use eBay as a valuation tool, rather then a selling one.

You nailed it, Enki. But there is always the tiny chance of a Hail Mary bidder (which 99.9999% or eBay sellers with sky high prices hope for, but never find.

I seem to remember a sale in the mid '00s that went for somewere around $5600 to $6000...  There was an MPT or NSFGE thread about it...

Now he's asking $20,000, 15 times the high bid the last time he tried to sell it.  :P

Cheap at twice the price! Obviously, another person looking for a Hail Mary buyer, like Mrs Miniver.

No, he really thinks he will get that much.  He's not a collector and really doesn't understand that this is a text-only, re-release poster and MUCH better rare Star Wars posters (the concert poster, the ESB "international, etc.) sell for much less than he's asking.

Well the hard reality will hit when it's been listed for 3 years without a nibble

I would say this seller is more like mrs miniver. Wanting to use ebay to simply "show" what he has, without ever really wanting to sell. As we all know, his listed prices are a testament to that.  :o

Actually, the high bid was $760, so it's actually over 26 times the high bid.

I think he really does want to sell it too, but his expectations are just way overboard. Before listing it, he (according to him) spoke to many people who told him how rare it was (which is true) and how they are very valuable and never come up for auction (also true). I assume some of these people gave him ridiculous estimates on the value, so now he is confident that someone is going to pay him $20,000+ for a text only re-release poster. He doesn't seem desperate for the money, so I imagine it will either sit on eBay until he gets tired of relisting it, and then he'll either come to his senses or it will disappear back into this closet for a rainy day.

On the bright side, maybe some of the other examples of this poster will begin to surface and maybe those owners will decide to let the market decide the value.

I could see some property developer or other mogul going for that $300K lot. It would take years to collect all those, if you had the time and patience to seek them all out.
$300K is spare change to some people.
$3 is spare change to me ...  :'(

I could see some property developer or other mogul going for that $300K lot. It would take years to collect all those, if you had the time and patience to seek them all out.
$300K is spare change to some people.

True, but doesn't that take some of the fun out of it?

I mean, part of collecting (IMHO) is the fun in trying to actually find the items and score a good deal. If some die hard Star Wars poster collector had the money to just buy one lot with every single poster in it, then what? Great, they have them all and their 'quest' is over, but it took zero effort (outside of actually getting the money to pay for them) and I imagine the 'thrill' of having them all will be over pretty quick. On the other hand, if someone spends years and years (or decades) building up that collection, the effort will make them appreciate it more. I think this applies to all collectibles.

I'm not talking about a collector. Just someone who wants the bragging rights, or nostalgic experience, of owning such a vast collection.
One click and you own it, could be tempting to the right person. I think that's what Miniver is looking for.

$300,000 is nothing for plenty of people.

Here's a USAToday article about $100,000 monthly rentals for swanky homes. (http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/housing/story/2012-06-24/cnbc-high-priced-rentals/55764944/1)

Heaps of people with cash to blow.
Star Wars especially is a great draw card.
We had one guy in Aus blow $27 mill at casino in 1 night. Walked away and laughed about it!!

I just don't see someone buying that entire collection just because they have the money and want bragging rights. I could see that scenario on a single poster (or maybe a small handful) that are very, very, very valuable. But having a ton of posters that range from common to rare just doesn't seem (to me) that interesting of a purchase for someone to blow their disposable money on. Sure there are a few very rare posters in that collection, but they could be obtained individually for far less.

People with that type of money, who want to show off their stuff, want individual items that are easily displayed to impress their friends and colleagues. No one is going to fill an entire room in their mansion with random Star Wars posters for that purpose. Trying to display such a collection would really be inconvenient. For that amount of money, that could buy something much more impressive in the Star Wars collectible arena (like an original screen used Yoda puppet, or something else that was actually in or part of the movie itself).

Just like rich people who collect cars. Someone might not blink an eye dropping $1,000,000 on some super rare antique car, but I don't see them spending that amount just to have one of every single model that Ford ever made.

I think the only hope of that lot ever selling as a complete unit is for some die-hard Star Wars poster collector to win the lottery and be just completely reckless with the proceeds.

If you had $50 mill in the bank, would you buy them?

Me personally? No. I could think of better things to do with $300,000, regardless of how much I had to spend. And if you only have $50mil, and you would be willing to spend $300k on something like an overpriced set of posters, you won't have $50mil for very long.

I would definitely be more willing to buy some expensive posters, but I would still rather put together my own collection than by one already assembled.

Outside of the idiot "nouveau riche" people who win/inhereit/etc. their money and lose it all in a matter of months or years, the people who do spend crazy money on stupid crap (like the earlier example of the one who lost $27mil at a casino and laughed) do it because they have a steady stream of more money coming in. Just like the Saudi princes whose families get billions a year on oil revenues. They make more money then they could possibly spend, so they have no cares in the world.
