Title: Mike's German SCI-FI / HORROR posters
Post by: peckinpah on April 09, 2012, 05:57:45 PM
I love the 'fantastic film' genres. I'll  start with Corman / E.A. POE, Hammer, Harryhausen, Apes, misc. 50s/60s. I wanted to make reference stills of my archive for a long time. So I started...

(4 CORMAN/POE - films had a late release in Germany: HAUNTED late 60s; MASK early 70s; RAVEN in 1979 and LIGEIA (ugly poster I don't even have) in 1980. The early ones are great, I think:

I myself prefer the HOUSE OF USHER 1-sheet, the atmosphere is hard to top I think.

Yes I think we were quite lucky in Germany regarding the quality (most of the time). I love Spanish posters, but the paperstock...
German size 59x84cm are ideal for framing (frames for 1-sheets or Quads are really expensive over here). In Germany we especially love the old lobby cards: on thick 'real' photographic paperstock, superb image quality and large sets, sometimes up to 40-50 different cards! It is much more difficult to collect these, sometimes it takes decades to get a set complete (if so) because they are spread out all over the country or were destroyed for good by the distributors in the 60s or 70s before the scene started here and we could save the material. In the US or the UK one 'just' has to have the money and a set of eight can be added to a collection.

Anyway, here are all German Harryhausen posters (no re-releases included, IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA was not released in Germany, shame). only BEAST FROM 20.000 FATHOMS I do not have, only one copy is known, no need to talk about its value :(

You are absolutely right Mike. A few years ago I was lucky to get 2 of these german lobby cards for an argentinean film (a local version of Lang's "M"). One is numbered "19" so I assumed there was a lot of them left to complete the set. Been looking for another one to show up since then, with no luck  :(

Let me know the German title, I'll try my berst :)

An example for a German set. 20.000 MILES TO EARTH. Took me 20 years to find all 24 cards. The US 11x14 features no image of the Ymir, over here we had him 8x in the set :)

Love the zombies, the german CANNIBAL film posters are what I want to see (well I own or have owned a lot, but they are the best).

ALSO ... Have any MARK OF THE DEVIL variations? I had 3 different German A1's.

OK Ari, I hereby delay HAMMER for more disgusting (partly) beautiful artwork. Growing up in a movie theater and watching ZOMBI HOLOCAUST and ZOMBI FLESHEATERS at the age of 13 must have had some affect on me. Maybe Zombies (and for some: Cannibals) are the Godzillas of my generation :)

I love the posters and the films.
I was similar, had rented All the Fulci's I could get my hands on by the time I was 12 and bought Dawn of the dead by then also. Its good for your health I am sure.

I think so too, at least it works for us :). Great humorous people like Romero showed me early on that some of the nicest and honest people are in the horror (and heavy metal) genre. My experience anyway.
DAWN to me still is the most frightening horror film ever made. With a lot of help by Argento (or rather: GOBLIN !).

Add two more to my want list.

Looks like we are about the same age!
I also saw ZOMBI HOLOCAUST and ZOMBIE FLESHEATERS in the cinema in Germany when I was around 13. Way too young to legally see these films, but our local cinema didn't care as long as you bought a ticket.
Even saw DAWN OF THE DEAD in the same cinema when I was twelve. Made quite an impression on me.

I'm not a fan either. I also miss the fantastic element.
And we all should eat less meat. Especially us non-cannibals and non-zombies, the world suffers tremendousely because too many people want too much cheap flesh.
(Those two posters I can organize, price range is $30 - $50 I estimate.

Let's go home Debbie, HAMMER always sounds like 'home' to me ...

Even though Ollie's only tiny here, this poster is special.  Wow.
The Germans obviously loved their Hammer time.
Awesome selection, Mike.

Thanks ! So far I photographed 800 this week.

All seven first release APES posters + the six first release STAR WARS posters:

Oh, unused, really ? Cool, so they shipped it over to Germany before they decided not to use it in the UK. That makes it special indeed. (it is quite scarce, small distribution company, not much survived on this title in Germany).

OK, more SCI-FI :)
Some 50s first release:

With the exception of THE BLOB and TIME MACHINE, I don't have the really expensive $1000+ German genre posters
like FRANKENSTEIN, BLACK LAGOON, TARANTULA, FORBIDDEN PLANET and certain others, but I'm more
than happy with what I got. Especially since I'm rather into lobby cards :)

I'm afraid I will stop uploading posters.
Maybe some day this forum gets a technical update and it will
be possible to download files directly from the PC as possible elsewhere.

PICTURE TRAIL suddenly deleted files (I have already 3 accounts there,
they fill up too fast) , the 'EDIT' option here is no longer active on my postings,
so I can't repair ...  just a mess.

But
Many thanks for looking and commenting !

Yes, but I had already uploaded 800 posters with Picturetrail. I could only invest so much time because I'm in-between projects, now this mess here, just time wasted.
Maybe I'll upload some other genres/talents at Bucket and post some in the other threads..

I feel your pain.  I just learned Imageshack cut their unlimited free uploads to 500.  I've got about 5,000 pictures that I was using my movie review site over the last 5-6 years that are all going to vanish here starting May, luckily I'd been re-uploading a lot of them to Google over the last year and changing most of the links on the blog but it's a pain, probably still have about 25% of my site's pictures linked to Imageshack.

I'm not into programming but I was told it is not such a big deal to equipe a forum website with a 'DOWNLOAD FROM YOUR PC' option. It would save so much time and trouble.

Problem is that the image is then hosted by the forum and stored on its allocated disc space.  It isn't fair to make Holiday and Thierry pay more in disc charges so you can show off your posters.

Yes, I didn't think of that. I didn't know who is financing this forum (others founds ways). I just thought a poster forum without many visuals is like a discothek without music. I got carried away anyway. I go back to work now, I never wanted to 'show off' in the first place anyway.

I would love to see what you would do if you DID want to "show off"!

I for one was honored to see so many wonderful posters and I am sure many others feel the same way, so you in no way "wasted" your time in sharing them.

I second what Bruce has said.
I want to see more of your posters and I want to see the ones that Picture Trail deleted replaced.
Seems to me your special collection needs it's own web site gallery.

OK, I'll continue for a while. I emptied the picture trail accounts to 70%, hoping that files stay there asap. I will upload here those I had already uploaded there. One proble I have with Bucket: 90% of the images I uploaded have to be rotated after uploading! Anyway experienced this problem ? I don't really have the time to rotate hundreds of images all individually by 90 or 180 degrees (takes hours).
Also I really preferred the size of the p-trail images, much better to look at in forums. Those from Bucket are much bigger.

POE / CORMAN (I'll mix in some lc's and foreign posters):

Never seen this one before. I used to have the US 1 sheet, but this baby leaves it in the dust.
Very nice.

You really think so ?  It's great to hear that.
Here in Germany I never met anybody who likes it (me neither I'm afraid).
The film was great :) But the poster is quite scarce, the lc's are even harder to find.

found another one:

I just watched SPINE - TINGLER, great feature length documentary, highly recommeded.
Since Castle & Amicus were included, here's the rest of my German CASTLE (Horror only) / AMICUS posters:

Love the Godzilla/Japanese stuff.
Especially the H-man and the 1st release King Kong vs. Godzilla, don't usually see those

A new HAMMER entry, and a few BARBARELLA surfaced recently, so I picked one up up for a 'nice price':

Love the Nekromantik. I have been looking for one of those for awhile now. I was bidding on the one that was on Bruce's site but it got to high in price for me. If you know where I can pick one up for a descent price or you have an extra you want to part with PM me.

That price wasn't too bad really, I doubt I could organize one for less than 70-80 (Dollars)..

I was trying to put in another bid from my phone started to slow down and would not load the page I needed fast enough. I will find one eventually.
