Title: Do stamps on posters bother you?
Post by: eatbrie on September 27, 2011, 08:19:02 PM
There are a lot of things that bother me when it comes to the condition of posters, but stamps are not it.  Unless they are, of course, smack of the middle of a poster, to me, they add authenticity to the piece.  They tell a story and let me know that the poster had a life.

Do you mean postage stamps or ink censor stamps Thierry?

I dislike the censor stamps eg Canadian censor stamp on a US poster, so I dont buy them with the stamp

I dont mind the (tax?) postage stamp on the belgian and italian posters, actually I prefer to have them on there, because it does add that bit of additional interest, so long it is placed unobtrusively.

I'll second that I don't know what you mean. If you mean snipes, then I hate them.

When I eventually get this backed the tax stamps stay, the dogmad rating snipe goes with extreme prejudice.

Like tax stamps on Belgies as well if not directly over faces or naughty bits.  Not particularly keen on ink stamps anywhere, but will tolerate (and discount for) if necessary.

I like the stamp on the back of the pulp fiction posters that indicates they are authentic.  Good stamps like that are really helpful.

I have a Kiss of Death title card with a big fat Quebec censor stamp right over the title.  It's somewhat of an eyesore but I am learning to just accept it :-\

That`s an argentinean poster, right?
The censor stamp is from Buenos Aires municipality, allowing the image on the poster to be shown in public places (like the front of theaters). Those stamps don`t bother me, but they truly are too big...

I they are glued on, I take them off. The ink stamps, I will not buy a poster with that. Too paranoid it will bleed into another poster.

Its on a case by case basis for me.  I like signs of use in my posters, but a stamp over a face or in an important part of an image is a non-starter.

I found it interesting that some said the postage stamps are OK, but the rubber stamps aren't.  To me the postage stamps are more intrusive.

I tend to agree that snipes are generally poorly done, a distraction, and something I would have removed during restoration.

And No, I have never had a Canadian censor stamp bleed onto anything else.

If you cut a Canadian censor stamp, does it not bleed?

I guess this question is down to weather you are into Cinema, or films. Or weather you just like nice pictures on the wall.

I'm a film guy first, but enjoy collecting Film memorabilia as part of the hobby. So a stamp on a poster to me is part of cinemas history. I know if stamped in the wrong place it would be annoying, so those I wouldn't buy. Or would want much cheaper. ;D

I'm with Paul.

Unless they are really obtrusive, I actually like them.
And I love the screening information on old Long Daybills...I keep it where I possibly can when I get them fixed up.

I'm with Paul on this thought, too. Unless obtrusive and smack dab over the artwork, title, credits, a stamp shows the history and life that poster has lived, somewhere in the cinema world.

Steve, I think Abbe Lane would be disappointed & sad to know that a bit of blue ink in the upper corner made you look away from her.   girly2.gif

Stumbled into this embossed stamp today.  It is located to the right of the Bat logo at the top.

Got this from Singapore but I am guessing it is a Thai stamp? Any help or anyone have this same poster with the embossed stamp...is it a tax stamp or just an approval stamp?

Hey Jason..

Sorry for the UBER late reply. On the ones i was referring to above, I will have to check what year they're from, but from memory, Im thinking around the year 2000.. but may have been before. But i got one recently, with the same embossed stamp, that is from 1993.
