Title: I propose a new sub-forum: Movie Posters>Genres
Post by: Chop-Top on July 11, 2011, 01:43:46 AM
All the threads, both recent and old, relating to similar types of posters can be merged into this new category and this would keep the General Discussion area, well, for discussion!

It would also make this question obsolete:

Why so many stickied threads in General Discussion?
http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,2155.0.html (http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,2155.0.html)

Threads that would apply (Mods, I did the hard work for you!):

Mods: I've deleted the threads from this list that have already been moved. The list is showing those threads that still need to be moved to the "Genres" sub-forum. As more threads get moved, I will keep refreshing this list:

Then my effort wasn't for naught.  :)

With all the leg work done, it should take the Admin about 15 minutes to move all the threads.

You've got an enthusiastic new member (perhaps guilty of over-exuberance) and you guys are shooting him down?

If no one follows his lead, all his threads will wither and vanish. What's the big deal?

Would you rather it be like some other forums where there is a post every day or two?

If his topics don't interest you, ignore them, or better yet, start some of your own!

Exactamundo. They can talk the talk but can't walk the walk. My request still stands, minus the spoof threads created to mock me. Imbeciles.

Historically these were know as the POST YOUR POSTER thread and generally speaking there was a new one once a week. Think this probably just overwhelmed those that have been around awhile.

There's enough of them now to warrant a new sub-forum. General Discussion should be for discussion purposes, not compiliating. That's just the way I see it.

My two penneth worth is that too many sub forums create confusion and no one will know where to find stuff.

Simplicity is the way forward, to my mind.

Chop

I think this is how most of us feel

#1 too many sub forums means too much work for most of us to surf through. For instance, right now, in movie posters forums, I only look at this forum and FS because I have limited time as do most people. So anything being chatted in a sub forum is lost on me.

#2 I think the forum just isn't prepared for so many subjects as you posted all at one time and it is not the lack of sub-forums but the sudden bombardment of this particular sub forum that has made spagetti out of it.

in other words, it isn't the lack of a sub-forum, but the completely uncontrolled number of new posts - all of some kind of similar variety - that has made all previous threads get lost. I don't think hardly anyone is prepared to start looking for many dozens of images to post in each subject because of other time constraints, which is why to date there were never more than a few threads of this nature, which is manageable for the majority of people who have jobs.

APF is not a democracy, it is a hands-off dictatorship. Thierry and Holiday being the dictators. But they are not Dick-tators, so it works. However, the rest of the members are in a democracy. No one member has more rights than any other and each of us more or less controls ourselves within certain constraints to prevent the forum from descending into anarchy. Carson had tried to shoe-horn the forum into his own presumption of what it should be (along with trying to force himself in as a real dick-tator) and it was forcefully rejected and Carson the crook is no longer part of this forum (at least publicly)

Myself, I do not want more sub-forums created. It will not expand my participation. Indeed, it could wind up having the opposite effect.
I also don't want any single member clogging up the system, which would have the same effect as making more sub-forums

we can keep picture threads alive truthfully only as long as they are manageable. once they get to an uncontrolled level, the group will disintegrate into complete anarchy & result in negatives, not positives.

Yes, my point exactly, so I don't see how adding more of them will make this better.
I'm a huge fan and advocate of keeping the places I need to go to see what others have posted to a minimum.

Well, you have a choice between two evils: organization or less sub-forums. I've made my case, and I think it's pretty clear why.

I think the problem is that you posed a question in this thread, but then didn't wait for an answer before doing what you wanted anyway.  And now you are using your pile of new threads as an (circular) argument as to why we should have sub-forums.  Yes, you've made your case.

Shall we put it to a vote?  As much as I desire a little spring cleaning now and again, I'm not sure this is the way to go about it...

My recent posts aside, how does one currently go "browse" various types of movie posters easily? Considering that is one of the main reasons for this forum, as well as discussion, I'm surprised it's not easier to do without "searching" for an old thread, if one can remember the thread name to begin with. I agree, let's put it to a vote. I don't know how to create a poll, someone else will have to do it. Harry how about you?

Just put the fuckers posts in a sub-forum so I don't have to scan and avoid any post started by chop top or wonka in the general discussion.  Can you also turn them off showing up in the "new replies since you last visited" area?  I personally find them fun but get them out of the general discussion pit; it is somewhat annoying....

Call it "Chop Top's marvelous world of sub categories!"

No offense Top; but I spent all last night looking and posting instead of cataloging my posters. They are addictive and I think they are a good idea, too good.

Forum members should have the right to stop in and buy but make it a special aisle... for those willing to risk the time drain...  ;)

Thanks for doing it Holiday, but it only took me about an hour to find and list them. Of course, I have no idea what is required to move them.

EDIT: I saw you said merge. You shouldn't have to merge anything. Just create a sub-forum under Movie Posters called "Genres" or "Compilations" and drag all of those threads I listed in the OP to that new sub-forum. Done.

Forum: Who gives a shit! You're gonna kill the old timers, man! What am I gonna tell Holiday when WW23 starts?
Top Chop: C'mon Dude, eventually the old timers will get sick of our little game and, you know, create a sub forum.
Wonka:Why don't we just create 50+ new posts in the General Discussion area, Top Chop?
Top Chop: Yeah, what can they do?
Wonka: Really?
Forum: Yeah, and in the meantime, what do I tell Holiday? You know about having to move all the posts once were WINNING.
Top Chop: General Discussion, Wonka, is public domain, the there is nothing they can do. That means that they can't delete them, they can't ignore them, were anonymouse, I don't care about nothing but WINNING!, and I sure as shit *don't want to fucking roll in General Discussion*!
Wonka: Sheesh.
Top Chop: New Sub Forums!
Forum: Chop Top, how are we going to...
Top Chop: New fucking Sub Forum!
Forum: Oh fuck it. I'm out of here.

Agree with this, nothing to debate here from the other side but I am sure an effort isn't out of the question.

Also don't forget the now-moderated F-bomb and cock insults directed to the forum that can be added to the pile of Crazy.

Was that a formal rule? Every single picture posted by others is what they own? BTW, my "Googling" as you claim caused real POSITIVE change to this forum...something you've done as well? The day one of the assholes on this forum, besides Holiday, admits the change was for the best will be the day that fucking pigs start flying. And until that happens expect to see it thrown back in your faces when you post this type of nonsense.

I've seen plenty of people post pictures of posters they don't have. I would wager to say everyone does it. Besides, there's already a separate forum just for showing off WHAT YOU OWN:

Saying you have to post pictures of only what you own in other sub-forums is delusional at best.

I would say there's no "rule" per se, but I will also say that the assumption I made to this point is that, other than those in the unicorns thread, I figured the pics being posted were for posters that are owned.  Otherwise, we only have to go to impawards.com to see posters and throw them into this or that category.

I guess putting it another way, what's the point of posting pictures of posters that you don't own?  It's like window shopping.  Dry humping.  Low Cal Sweetener.  Low fat cookies.  There's no payoff.

I'm not going to make a rule, and I don't presume to even have the right or power to make a rule like this.  But, I know I would consider the fact that if I started posting posters of things I don't own, I would expect that someone in the group is going to question just what the hell I'm trying to accomplish.

I'm sure this can be argued the other way.  At the least, postings by others of posters that caught their eye but that they do not own, may broaden my own collecting horizons to things I have not seen or considered before.

Idle thoughts and ruminations.

Oh, and creating the Genres subforum wasn't a matter of agreeing or disagreeing with anyone.  It was a good idea.  As a result,  not only did I move the threads that chop started, but I moved about 10 other existing threads to the new one.  As a result, General Discussion is opened up. The pinned topics were crowing out the regular topics.  Now, there are more regular topics showing, and I think that tends to promote more discussion.  I don't know about you, but I don't go past the first page of threads on a board.  Once they get to page 2 and on, they are mostly in oblivion until someone is bored and goes digging to revive one.

I've seen plenty of people post pictures of posters they don't have. I would wager to say everyone does it. Besides, there's already a separate forum just for showing off WHAT YOU OWN:

I think it depends.
If theres a thread, say, ADVANCES (which there is), the First post, could just spend a few hours and get an example of all the advance posters ever, and paste the URLS, and thats the end of the thread, maybe he misses one or two. But thats all. OR its more fun, to see what Advances we own.
But of courseif it comes up, likre...

"Hey thats a great poster, I do prefer the style B, wish I had one"

"Oh didnt know there was a style B"

"Yes it looks like this"
(Post borrowed image here)

But a thread like werewolves, theres no  fun (IMHO) in posting random pics from other sources, I want to see werewolves that live in forum friends homes.

Yes, that's it.

Peeepul....go to the Star Wars thread and start from the first post. Starting counting how many pictures were posted that weren't owned. When you get to 10 stop as there's no more need to discuss this.

theres a difference between discussing a particular thing, like starwars as there as so many releases, dates, countries, oddities, fakes, etc etc. But yes in reality, why not look at the SW poster site?

I posed this question once before because some posts did seem like "wow he has that, !baller!..."

My stance on this is:

Only post what you own!

Unless a pic is needed to facilitate a discussion.

I'll have to agree with Raulleaf on this one.  My limited collection may not allow me to post picture on every genre topic, but it somehow seems misleading to post pictures that are not yours in one of these posts. In the least they should be stated as "not owned".

This thread has the potential of becoming the next APF World War.
I think that those with strong feelings should sit back, take a deep breath and re-consider their thoughts before their fingers hit the keyboard.
I consider APF members to be friends and -- while none of the tough veterans here need a white knight -- I take offense to the way they are being treated in this thread.

That's why I dropped all this shit into this off-topic forum.  No one needs to look here in order to enjoy the posters in the other threads.
