Title: Stellar theater poster examples
Post by: Dread_Pirate_Mel on January 08, 2010, 08:36:32 PM
Don't own these - actually I don't own any theater posters yet - but they look pretty cool.

P.S. Pics of theater posters are hard to find - the best source is ...I hate to say it.... moviegoods.com

That Little Shop of Horrors is great!  The Wicked isnt bad either.  It reminds me of some of the Cuban screen printed posters out there.

Les Mis was the first production I ever saw on stage, so it holds a special place in my heart.  Though, Phantom remains my favorite, and Wicked I love because I took my daughter there for her 16th birthday.  Wish I could get something from the latter two.

But, I do have this bus shelter for Les Mis:

^^ I'm loving the Dutch poster. I collect theatre posters and Les Mis is a particular favourite - such an iconic image.

Love the Les Mis, Backstage.
I have only one theatre poster, this variation on the above-posted Little Shop of Horrors... it's a full 27x40 in size.

I don't actually own any theater posters but had an interesting commission a couple of weeks ago.

One of my friends works for one of the largest marketing/design companies that specialises in West End Theater design. He'd just finished designing all the material for Hair, which has just come over to London from Broadway with the full award winning US cast (which is unheard of I think as the expense is mahoosive!). The only problem was they wanted to give a gift to all the top Broadway Producers coming over from NY for the opening party but didn't have a plan.

Because it's a 60's hippy, peace, love and CND symbol type show my mate thought of my stencil art... to cut a long story short I got the commission to spray a limited edition of 12 artworks to be given to these people (I did three differently coloured versions, four of each). Below is my favourite, the green one, and then a photo of a blue one how they were framing them to give out.

No biggy really, just thought it was related as time was very short and I had to use their existing graphics for the painting.

Nice work AP. I like the way your process captured the feel of the 60s.  Well done.

Not sure if this is the right place for these, but they are theatre posters of pantomime's.   As I was going through some of my bigger posters I thought I would take a few quick pics, and post them.

Emovie auctioned off a set recently.  The colors and imagery on those stone lithos are beautiful.  I especially like the Red Riding Hood

Didn'T know Bruce also sold these, I must keep an eye on his auctions. Like a lot of other posters you really need to see these, as they look fantastic in the flesh as it were.

I do have quite a large quantity of different one's I'll post a couple more when I get to them.

The Tenth Anniversary poster. Unlike almost all other London theatre posters which are printed on glossy paper, this was printed on thin card with gold foil-blocked lettering. It is very rare.

I picked up this one a few years ago from emovieposter auction:

I still haven't hung it because I need to get a frame and it is large at 41x58.  I'm considering masking off a French 1p from Robert.

Just won this from Bruce/EMP.
Apparently, it is from a 1991 stage play.
Whoulda thunk?

The twisted art is by Wieslaw Walkuski.

Yep.  The polish stage posters are works of bizarre art.
I picked this up about 6 years ago
(http://www.emovieposter.com/images/moviestars/AA110215/550/polish_26x38_krol_edyp_stage_JM01145_L.jpg)

Just did a search and translate.  Apparently, this is a Polish production of Oedipus Rex.  I just couldn't resist the image, especially at $4 winning bid.
