Title: Forum's Chat Room
Post by: eatbrie on May 13, 2011, 12:22:45 AM
Do any of you losers ever use the chatroom?

Just wondering if we should keep it or not.

I think the main problem is that you can't see who's in it without entering.  There should be a way to see it from outside.

Holiday?  Maestro?

How about posting a scheduled time when most of us can meet?
That would be neat, eh?

I really, really like the IDEA of a chatroom. But every time I check in, there's never anybody in there. As somebody who is more or less always has the forum open, it'd be nice to have some real-time conversation. But this type of community isn't particularly suited for it. Unless there was a massive influx of people wanting to chime in about what they bought.

I was one of the early supporter of a chatroom for the forum, but after a while i began to think, how many conversations of great importance i may have missed, because i wasn`t logged in at the time; so much valuable info would be lost forever if we all talked in the room, then, forgot or didn`t bother to post anything on the public pages.
This made me change my mind and felt it would be better without it.
Eventually the chat function was given a trial and i did log in regularly, but the chance of any other member logging in at the same time was remote, then when i did bump into a fellow user, the lag was intolerable..not sure whether the problem was universal or perhaps just my provider, but eventually i stopped even checking for users..
So while its there i don`t mind it,but i dont think it would be sorley missed if it was removed.

There should be a way to see who's in the chat room before you get in.  The way it is set up right now, it makes no sense.

I've asked Holiday to look into it, but he's not the most computer savvy person in the world and he's a computer genius next to me.  If any of you guys know how to do it, SHOUT loud and clear.  Otherwise, I'm thinking of removing the chat room entirely.

Otherwise, I'm thinking of removing the chat room entirely.

That wouldn't be cool. It gets a lot of use.
Most nights when I drop in (between 7-11 PM EST), members are there and using it.
Those who want to get involved should open another browser in chat and re-fresh every few minutes.

Yes there were many nudes.

I see where Holiday is coming from though, paying for a chat room where the same 5- 6 guys could listen to me make fun of the same dealer is just silly.

We did have fun though. I enjoyed it alot!  ;D

It's really not that expensive - $50 bucks a year or something like that.  But, I was under the impression that it was not used.  At all.  There were other threads I think indicating that the chat function did not work well.

I don't mind putting it back if you are actually using it.  Just let me know.  I don't even care if it's only a handful of you that use it if you're telling me that you will use it.

Christ, I feel like I'm talking to my kids.  Don't be wasteful!  Finish your food!

I enjoyed using chat. It was great talking to members in real time, rather than on delay via messages or posts. It was a censor free zone and a great way to feel that people are not just bits of text posted here and there, but are really there!

I went in a number of times and it was fun, I had in NSF for a while too, but slowly people stopped using it. It might still be there, I don't even know.

It can be good, sometimes people can talk more openly when it's not going to stay for all to see, which is good and bad. Some of the chats would have been good for others to read, and discuss, but then certain things would never have been said.

But as I mentioned, people can get me on various chat thingies, yahoo, gmail, Skype, I'm sure someone could set up a chat group in one of these kinda program's and make a APF group, or make an indecent one of your own. Chat away. The chat here and at NSF I did have some problems with and often had to force quite and reload etc. but is probably some software update I never bothered with.

I miss chat.  I think you disabled it in November when I was away?
Had a good time whenever we'd congregate...sometimes had as many as six hammerheads in there at once.
One night I couldn't find it and I was forced to step out into the real word for some interaction.
It sucked and I had to hurt people in real life.
What have I become?
 mesmrized
Sorry. Rambling...

The chat room the way we had it set up was useless.  You would have to go in to see if anyone was there.  What i wanted was to have a list of the people visible before you got in.  Alas, neither Holiday nor i knew how to set it up, so we killed it.

Fancy pants, in my day we drank red cordial with ethanol.

Several years ago, I knew a guy that would go on and on about wine and how he knew everything there was to know.  In fact, he pretty much knew everything there was to know about whatever subject you chose to ask him about.  You know the type.  Well, he smoked marlboro reds like a chimney; so, I was pretty sure whatever he knew about wine would be heavily skewed by cigarette influenced taste buds.

We had a party at our house, and I decided to put it to the test offering him a glass of pretty decent pinot noir mixed with equal parts of grape flavored Mad Dog 20 20.  He loved it, drank it most of the night, and raved about it later.  I never told him.

"I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah."

David, you never cease to amaze me how much British T.V. you have seen.  Is it show in Oz often?

I lived in Portsmouth for 2 years as a pre-teen (supported Pompey of course and Leeds in the days of Billy Bremner, Jackie Charlton, Peter Lorimer etc), so I got the Flying Circus hot off the press as it were. We all went to school doing our best Ministry of Silly Walks. When we came home (to NZ) English comedy was pretty much the only comedy we had to watch, certainly US comedy if it existed wasn't on TV that I can remember, the same can't be be said for most dramas however there was a greater proliferation of US made shows back then, although the likes of Poldark and the Onedin Line were favs, and although I never liked Coro Street, I used to watch the Eastenders in its early days.

Back in the day all my friends lived week to week for the Monty Python show (gawd we almost worshipped that show), The Goodies, Some Mothers, the Liver Birds (sigh...Sandra) and Rising Damp and so on. Then later with The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin (most excellent), Citizen Smith, Turtle's Progress (short lived but really enjoyed it) so yes I have seen a lot of British TV, either in England or at home here in Australia or NZ. The old stuff is still shown on satellite TV  - Are You Being Served?, Dad's Army etc etc - there is a UK TV channel on Foxtel, I was hooked on Life on Mars and my wife records all the Prime Suspect shows for watching.

Same in Australia, guess it's a colony thing, when I was a lad (I am a women now) we had two tv stations, and abc then mostly played British stuff, or Aussie, but comedies were British.
Different now with all the stations and American shows dominating, but most Aussies of a certain age or older will have grown up with English television as the staple.

Lots of Brit ex pats in Perth ( and South African )
I personally don't like Perth.
I have lived there a few times and it's too hot, and too middle class (very clean and straight) although that part is changing, for the worse.
Big mining boom in the west and the divide between rich and poor is very exaggerated now. If you aren't part of the mining boom your paying more rent, more fr food and bills etc but not earning the big bucks those involved are. I wouldn't like to live there myself. Though of you have a trade and can work on the mines, you could retire after a few years.
It's a bit of a city that's not, has the bad points of a city, but not the good, but at the same time, the bad points f a country town, but not the good.

BUT people d love it, so I'm probably wrong. I like a proper city like Sydney or the country, rather than inbetween.

But really, two plus weeks in a row above 40c and you want to swim for Antarctica.

They are both retired, in fact they are both 90 this year, and put there longevity down to moving  to the better climate. Certainly makes you think... I maybe moving there in the next few years :D.......Though if it means giving up Quads and starting on Daybills.... :-\

I imagine it would be a good place to retire, another trouble though is its so remote, but if you don't mind that, it's close to all sorts of very different places, from dusty desert to rolling hills and rugged coastlines, just not close to any other cities.

As for daybills, well Perth once had more cinemas and drive ins per capita than anywhere in the world apparently, so there must be some finds to be had somewhere.

Not a crush for, don't swing that way, but GAN was my hero, the episode he died I cried. Rewatched again last year, and felt the tears welling again.

SOLILOQUY

To chat, or not to chat, that is the question:

Whether 'tis Nobler in the mind to suffer
The Slings and Arrows of outrageous Fortune,

Or to take Arms of POSTERS against a Sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them: to die, to sleep, TO COLLECT

No more; and by a sleep, to say we end THIS HOBBY OF OURS
