A few to start-- these are true works of art, of a bygone age. The detail speaks for itself, when one considers that each color of ink was printed separately to every poster done in this fashion. A few of these are in other threads but to have them together in one place to scroll thru, seems appropriate.

These are absolutely gorgeous posters Jeff. I often think who were the men that made this stone lithos. Not the designers of the posters but those who actually drew the stones...
-
Matias, I agree.. those men and women who actually drew the artwork on the stones, as well as those who did the actual printing were true artists and masters of their craft. I, too, am in awe.
I am in the same kind of awe of those artists that did etchings on copper plates (Rembrandt, Manet etc) for the same artistic reasons.

I think it's important to remember that "stone lithography" is really a misnomer for most movie posters, since the use of stones in printing had pretty much been completely phased out by the '20s, due to the obvious difficulty of handling large rocks and the inability to acquire those same large rocks. Zinc plates (which could be used on a rotary press) had taken their place, but happily achieved the same magnificent results (minus the stone "fingerprints").

Yes! I could use some help! Once it`s done, we can discuss what part of the poster each one gets:

Sounds good....
I just want a VERY small piece of the poster.. maybe 3 inches square... that way, there is more than enough to go around! ;D

I like the deep, rich colors, too, Ted. Something about it makes me think of THE CATMAN OF PARIS OS artwork (which I also find to be VERY cool). Maybe the color and stance of the primary image are what "hit" me. (It might be the clawed hands, too). I see that both are Republic Pictures, too.

Always worth repeating. And, in relation to this poster (and to a query by Paul Waines) about extreme closeups or magnified images of a stone litho poster, Poster Mountain published this page about an INVISIBLE MAN OS they recently looked at, and compared it to another original copy owned by Ron Borst. There are some great magnification images on the page, as well. The photo detail is remarkable:

Why does the conclusion say nothing about authenticity?

Why does the conclusion say nothing about authenticity?
Chris, I found this on the main page, where PM states it as Authentic:
And this more complete description of the examination:
U.S. One Sheet, stone-lithograph, Universal Pictures, 1933 H.G. Wells, Carl Laemmle, Gloria Stuart, Claude Rains Universal Horror Litho by unknown (probably Morgan), #1265 Measures: 27 3/16" x 40 15/16" Linen backed and expertly restored. Microscope images shown at lower right were taken directly from the "Invisible Man" one sheet in the Ron Borst collection.
Imprinted with the PMCS silk screened "fingerprint-tag". Visual evaluation using light table, black light, microscope, digital photography and microscope photography. Side-by-side comparison with a one sheet from the Ron Borst collection using photography with a digital camera [Nikon D90 with 12.3 megapixels], 50mm lens, and a microscope camera [AMSCOPE MD600E]. Consultation with the previous owner and conservator. Minor consultation with Dan Strebin and Ron Borst. Comparative examination courtesy of Ron Borst, his poster was taken off his wall, removed from it's frame and transported to our laboratory . Documentation by Lindsay Simmons and John Davis of Poster Mountain Inc.
This poster was neither conserved nor restored by Poster Mountain, Inc. U.S. one sheet poster mounted to a substrate of cotton canvas and Masa paper with a water soluble adhesive. Paper losses: 5 in the top border, from left to right measuring approximately: 2.5cm, 2.5cm, 3.3cm, 3cm and a thin loss 7cm to the upper right corner. Right border losses: upper right measuring approximately 2.5cm and at the center fold, 0.5cm. In the lower section above the text "A UNIVERSAL PICTURE" there are approximately 4 oblong losses, the largest is in the center measuring 7cm long and 2cm high, the smaller holes are approximately 2cm each. These losses have been filled with a compound or paper. A tear beginning at the center fold inside the woman's hat and continues approx. 18cm to the right. This poster was previously folded laterally 5 times and once vertically at center. Due to these folds the border in these areas is partially broken and has been in-painted. The border has been spot-airbrushed in all areas where losses and breaks occur.
Cosmetic restoration using a combination of airbrushing and colored pencil is evident in the H, G and S, of "H. G. Wells'", the woman's hat and coat, the Invisible Man's neck bandages, in the replacement of the upper border crop marks, and in large oblong area directly above the words "A UNIVERSAL PICTURE" in the lower section. Side-by-side comparison with the one sheet from the Ron Borst collection highlight the similarities in plate impressions as well as the differences in color depth and value. The Borst poster reflects a much lighter ink pressing with less black and more yellow. The difference in the cyan (blue) in and around the words "A UNIVERSAL PICTURE" is believed to be the result of a careful local cleaning of the litho stone during the cyan print run.

I was commenting on the method to create the artwork, not what it was ultimately used for. None of the 3 images (Karloff, Lanchester or Hobson) look to be photographs or offset printing, imo. What does it look like to you?
Thanks, Sean.

No, this was not used as the insert, 3-sheet, or window card (though all 3 use a similar design and layout), this is unique to the pressbook.
The insert does give the best view of all 3 photos that were used in the design of the pressbook cover, ranging from the tinted-photo of Hobson to the full-on artwork of Lanchester.

Brude
What is especially cool about that Slaves in Bondage poster is that almost all the known posters on this (and other 1930s sexploitation titles) are actually from 1940s "roadshow" re-releases (when wily promoters would take movies like this to small towns and show them only on Friday and Saturday nights, just like the midnight shows of decades later).
This is one of the only first release posters on one of these titles I have ever seen!

Ted, the poster for Unholy Garden has one of the most beautiful female portraits i`ve seen (The winner being a Bette Davis drawn by Vargas auctioned by Bruce some time ago).
The background of Black Moon in contrast with the hand`s silhouettes is what I can only describe as stone litho kicking tremendous amount of other printing techniques`s ass , and Most Dangerous Game... I`ll take two of those!

Here's an image I tracked down (not the greatest) for the US one sheet for LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT (1927). The Argentine version, which has been posted here more recently, is virtually identical. While the MGM name appears at the top of the Argentine version, Chaney's name receives top billing on the US paper.

Stone Lithography
Stone lithography was the first printmaking technology that allowed a traditional artist to work using traditional techniques, and to create prints that could rival an original painting in terms of detail, mood and color variations. Stone lithography was extremely popular starting in the early 1800s, and even though more modern methods have replaced the majority of its uses, it is still practiced today by some artists and lithography studios.
The basic idea used in stone lithography is extremely simple:
1. The artist draws/paints on the stone with a greasy substance. For example, a litho crayon is a soft waxy/greasy crayon. There are also litho paints and pencils. The stone picks up this greasy substance and holds it.
2. The stone is moistened with water. The parts of the stone not protected by the greasy paint soak up the water.
3. Oil-based ink is rolled onto the stone. The greasy parts of the stone pick up the ink, while the wet parts do not.
4. A piece of paper is pressed onto the stone, and the ink transfers from the stone to the paper.
For a wonderful article that shows step by step examples of the process of stone lithography, see How Stuff Works
Stone lithography was used heavily during the early years of cinema. Several changes to the lithography industry caused the elimination of the use of this process.
Large slabs of limestone had to be used which were extremely heavy and bulky. The majority of these were imported from the Limestone pits of Bavaria. The bombing of World War I destroyed a large number of limestone pits, so an alternative had to be found for a large number of lithographers.
Some of the major lithographers turned to using a zinc plate instead of the limestone from necessity. Even though it gave the final image a slightly grainier look, it became the dominant printing process in the U.S.
By the late 30's, another major change was in the works with the movement to offset presses. This process is VERY distinguishable from the stone lithos.
Since lithos using zinc plates were not marked any different, most collectors consider these posters as stone lithos.

Just a quick note:
MANY dealers (some who know better) sell Aussie daybills as STONE LITHOS that are not, they are HAND LITHOS a different process, so if you see something like this listed as STONE litho remember its not ;)
-
And to be clear on the difference:
from the web. (I don't recommend the person who wrote this - but Its easier that typing myself ;)
From the 1940s to 1960s most Australian movie posters were produced with far more human involvement/assistance than other techniques therefore daybills from this era are often referred to as “hand litho”. This unique process is recognisable by its rich texture of colour and subtle tones.
“Hand lithos” were made using flexible zinc plates that were rolled around a large printing drum. The term ‘hand litho’ comes from the fact that the inks were applied to the plate by hand by the printers/artists who worked from tracing drafts they either executed themselves from reference material supplied by the distributors, or where the distributors contracted art studios (like Richardson for example) to execute the artwork.
Some collectors classify them as the same. Also for some reason some dealers think that listing the poster as ’stone’ litho raises the value.
It’s fairly easy to tell the difference between them - simply put a hand litho next to a stone litho daybill and the differences are obvious. Stone lithos have a finer grain to the inking, a greater subtlety to the shading and colors, a finer line to the black plate art, and so on.
Prior to the 1940s stone lithography was the most common movie poster printing process in Australia. This process was replaced primarily due to World War II.

OOH, Yes....House of Frankenstein. Come on Matias, if they were both for sale and you could only buy the one. As nice as the Muni is, you'd be going home with Dr Niemann... ;)
A quick question about that Frankenstein teaser.... Whale didn't want the audience to know what the Monster looked like. He even delayed it in the film, with Karloff coming into the room backwards. So why would they put that image on a teaser....?

Good question. I've also heard that Whale had Karloff back into the room to underscore the monster's adaptation to his new found life...like taking baby steps. He walked through the doorway because he was still getting acclimated to life and his surroundings?
Here is what I have heard was the teaser...a similar approach was used two years later for THE INVISIBLE MAN.

I bought the Frank teaser and set of lobby cards intending it to be the centerpiece of my third Christie's auction.
A fanatical collector came to me and told me he would offer me a bunch of great posters in trade for it, and I could auction those instead.
He put together the package and I agreed, and we did the trade, which I feel confident is the largest poster trade ever and I auctioned what I got.
When we exchanged the items. I offered to flip a coin for a second trade we were making for two $1,500 posters, and I won, so I got to keep both.
I offered to flip on the posters in the Frankenstein teaser trade (and I absolutely would have done it!), but he could not bring himself to do it.
Nowadays, I would not flip for $100.
Years later, I offered the teaser in one of my Christie's auctions, and it did not meet the reserve.

Jeezum crow....
How many of these teasers are known to exist?
-
Just the one, since 1990. so there has been a long time for a second to show up, but so far, it hasn't.
-
Thanks for that info, Bruce.
I have a few more questions that maybe others here would like to know also...
Do you have any pictures?
What kind of condition was it in in 1990?
How much did it sell for?
What might it be worth today? More than METROPOLIS?
Is the current owner a celebrity or a private collector?
and the answer to this last one, you can PM me: What is the new owner's address and when does he/she leave for work? wynk
-
I have some pre-restoration photos somewhere, but I don't know where.
It was in "very good" condition, folded with wear on the foldlines and some minor other wear, but nothing much.
It was paperbacked by an incredible restorer who does items for museums (very few movie posters) and they do what every restorer should do, only touching up the exact defects and not touching the rest at all.
I traded it, so there was no sale price. It did later end up changing hands, in a very complicated transaction. I don't know if the current owner wants it publicized that he owns it.
As to its current "worth" it is absolutely "worth" what someone would pay for it. It may well not change hands for decades.
I am sorry for the secrecy, but whenever I am told something in confidence, I honor that, as long as those involved are still alive. In a similar vein, I know so much about the cheating that went on in Las Vegas in the 1970s. When the last principal player passes on, I would like to write a book about what went on.
Bruce
-

You should write a book now, change the names and slightly modify/combine/blend the events/facts/persons so that the individuals can't be identified.
-
Thanks for that info, Bruce.
If you come across those pre-restoration pics, I for one would really like to see 'em.
While the METROPOLIS poster currently holds the record, I would think that the FRANKENSTEIN teaser (or the 6 sheet) would be the new champ if/when they ever come to auction.

Gertie is the "first cartoon to feature a character with an appealing personality" according to Wikipedia.
The first full-length animated film was made down here in Argentina in 1917, directed by the same guy that drew this poster:

Matias,
This is awesome. What a great poster.
The allure and mystery surrounding absinthe, is fascinating to me; (the green fairy, being made with wormwood, its being banned in the US for so long).
Even the ritual of preparing a glass for consumption, with the pouring of water over the ice, thru the strainer, making the absinthe turn cloudy, in the process. cheers

I have drunk it many times, its actually very refreshing and tasty, the drunk you get from it is very good also.

haha no when I was drinking I didnt care about what was in it (or didnt go out of my way to find out/be sure). I knew local beers and wines that didnt use animal ingredients and spirits but didnt think about it too much, I dont drink alcohol any more.
re Stone Lithos, do people get pissed at sellers on ebay who list just about any daybil (or whatever)l as stone litho? or do you click the link just to see?
Some sellers have been repeatedly emailed about this, and year after year still the same.

Look how close the left side of the window frame is to Keaton's left leg and arm, once the facade has hit the ground. It looks to be no more than a foot away (if that). The dimensions of the window, I'm sure, were built larger than it appears, but Keaton looks not quite centered in the opening; he could have moved to his right another half foot, to be so.
Very daring, (and well rehearsed) as that facade was solidly built and heavy. :o
-
Keaton and Harold Lloyd were just incredible. I always preferred Keaton because he looked so sad while at the same time managing to do so many funny and incredible stunts. Masters both were/ are.

What's the policy on posting in-progress auctions? Came across one of these Stone Lithos, know nothing about them, but was going to post in case someone was interested. Are people only interested in some of them?
-
Oh boy, can of worms, depends who you ask.
There's a thread for it, MID AUCTION WTF or something, but be warned if someone was watching it you'll get the wrath of poster satan poured over your innocent soul.
Personally I don't have a problem but I think I'm in the minority here.
-
Yeah, that's why I asked. Still has 3 days and no bidders yet. I asked here since it was a Stone Litho, but the thread you mentioned is probably the right place for it, if at all. Thanks.
-
Just please keep in mind that some members here may have already found the item too and by posting it publicly you could create unnecessary competition. There is no rule against posting in-progress auctions (mid-auctions thread). However, as a general rule of thumb I don't do it and prefer to send PMs. Its a small enough community here that I nearly always find a taker after 2-3 messages tops. If you take the PM route then there is really no difference waiting a few days to post the result in the 'post' auction thread.
If you check the stats on the first page there are currently 5 times as many anonymous guests online as there are members. There is probably a good chance then if you post it publicly one of the members here will *not* end up with it...
Food for thought.
-
but I think I'm in the minority here.
Just here? ;)

Haha no need for a wink, I am just about wherever I go, reason I loved Newtown.

I was in Newtown last night, started to drive off and a cockroach walked across the inside of my windscreen. It's a tidy car, the blighter must have gone in as I opened the door! Never had one in there before, eww

Ahh that's probably my little friend stinky, say hi next time. 8)

Poster satan will definitely get you!
-
Thanks, Harry. All very good points. Your statement, along with a little 'how would I feel if it happened to me', and of course Brude's +1, made me see the light. So without further ado, here is the post:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0
Hah, just kidding. ;)
I will refrain from posting the auction, but if anyone is interested, PM is your friend. Again, I know nothing about these Stone Lithos, so it could be an undesirable (is there such a thing? ;) ).
-
Dont forget, too, that many of the exquisite, vintage stone lithos shown in this thread, if for sale (BIN) or up for auction, can be listed for thousands of dollars each.
One seller, benito, who we all have commented on and complimented in the same breath, seemingly has an endless treasure trove of such posters. Yet his prices are in the stratosphere. ;)
-
Well according to BBC NEWS, Benito's stratospheric prices are falling down (in Russia). Sorry, bad joke. This girl can't help it. ;)

Good articles!
The jack gallery articles are pertinent, too, because this was the company that produced all of the S2 litho movie poster reproductions, many of which have been highlighted here on the board.
From the jackgallery about product link:
S2's fine art lithographs are crafted on the same flatbed presses used in the legendary ateliers of Paris. To our knowledge, only seven of these presses remain in the world. We are the proud owners of five of them. Unlike contemporary computer-generated reproductions, lithographs crafted on these presses contain pure color and subtle variations in texture that rival the nuances of painting.

It is not an age thing, it is just common sense, don't you think?..If it helps, I can also appreciate Ryan Gossling, you bet I do ;)

On the advice of a friend, Top Hat was the first movie that we let my 2 year old watch (beginning at about 20 months). It's now her favorite by far... more so than Finding Nemo, Ponyo and The Sound of Music, her other favorites. It's funny though as we were dreading the day she starts demanding to dress like a Disney princess. Yet, seeing Ginger in her spectacular dresses has had the same effect!
-
I bet Ginger's are more expensive too Matt - lucky you :P
-
Yup. This silk and ostrich feather number is her favorite! (mine too :P)

I love this and the signature.
-
And it's appropriately placed.. ON her white shoulder. ;)
-
I love this and the signature.
I'm so happy for you. Personally I think when when stars sign items other than photographs they take away from the beauty of the piece. The Astor signature looks terrible on this one sheet.
-
Well, I'm not scrubbing the two Rays signatures off of my BEAST FROM 20 THOUSAND FATHOMS one sheet ;D.
-
......The Astor signature looks terrible on this one sheet.
I agree with Louie. In this example the signature, which is not contemporary to the piece, is too prominent and distracts from the beautiful image. I can understand the thrill of meeting Mary Astor and having her sign it but the signature could have been better placed.
Mark
-
I agree with Louie and Mark.. it's poorly placed and is an obstructive item to the art
ps Lynn: I'm not scrubbing my Harryhausen sigs either, but every one of them is placed better than this

Mark
Actually, I was impressed at how clever Astor (then 75 years old) was to autograph her 'white shoulders,' underscoring the film's title.
And, while the sig might be 'contemporary,' it added something special to this poster's history. I'd bet the bank that this was the first poster for this film that she'd seen (much less handled) since she starred in it 50 years earlier.
And then she got to autograph it for a fan at the ripe old age of 75.
What a head rush she must have experienced at the time it was brought to her.

Both these posters were in the Charles A. Dyas collection (assembled by a theater owner between 1919 and 1932) that I auctioned at Christie's in 1990 and 1991. Both were obtained when he showed the movie at his theater) and both were in incredible condition. I have never seen another example of either poster, and I don't think either has re-surfaced since those sales, but I could be wrong on both accounts.

I stopped in an antique/art gallery, here in west LA yesterday... up on the wall and in a frame was this GIGANTIC German poster (it looked to be the size of 2 french 1Ps, but vertical) for the 1919 German film, called Opium. I never knew that early German paper was produced in this mammoth size. It was stunning! bed1
Here are 2 images (not of the one I saw).. the slightly darker image better shows the page breaks where the 2 panels were joined.

She also said that only 2 or 3 are known to exist. (And that the price was likely due to the fact that the owner probably really doesnt want to sell it... and if so.... there's the price! ;) )

When my mouth dropped open, that's when the ass't gallery manager said the owner had it priced so that it wouldn't likely sell --he likes it way too much, apparently. ;)
But this little gallery had MANY posters they were selling.. OS, HS, inserts, 40x60s and 30x40s. Some linen backed, some not. The bulk of the stuff was from the mid-late 50s, 60s, and some from the early 70s. A huge % were more "throw away" titles. This place was having a sale... and the cheapest thing being offered were inserts.. I went thru a tub of them.. many unfolded, so that was cool.
But the price of ANY insert, regardless of the title, was $100.00. OS were 3-500.00 each, again, on sale! Some 40x60s were priced as high as 3500-4000.00. Again, not for any title that would ever get that at auction. (The gallery primarily sells higher end, 19th antiques and paintings, so this really explains their pricing).

True, Chris.. and interesting to note that emovie had the re-creation done (or appears to have, based on the description wording):
"We had the finest restorer recreate the bottom one-third of the poster, matching it exactly to the high quality image of the poster we auctioned in 1992, so it has been recreated in every detail, and it was done on poster paper, so it looks authentic in every way."
I wonder who this (their) restorer is? dontknow.gif
As Bruce always asks in his descrips: "If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know."
Now we can ask about the artist of the bottom 1/3. ;D

Exactly. And emovie, in many, many cases knew/knows in great detail about the pre-restoration conditions as well as what was exactly done to these posters during the backing and restoration process.
I recall asking Bruce, via the board here once, who did their restoration work (in general). There was never a reply of any kind.

Dave Lieberman posted this poster to MOPO today. It isn't for sale but is owned by one of his clients that had this backed and restored.
Its a US OS for the 1932 film, Hell's House, with Bette Davis. Almost all the poster material that has been offered is for a later 30s or early 40s RR, which promoted Davis as The star.
Here, Davis has 3rd billing, behind Junior Durkin, as it was still quite early in her career.
And i think this is ONE beautiful stone litho. It just shines!! bed1

What you really want are posters for the alternate Spanish language versions, filmed at the same time for non-English speaking markets, which of course star Señor Durkin.
Actually after seeing this I really do want to get a Junior Durkin item for the collection. He had one of those tragic Hollywood Babylon lives that would fit in quite nicely. (Was 'mentored' by a notorious chickenhawk, and killed at a young age in a crash that only Jackie Coogan survived. Good stuff...)

VALENTINO SCREEN PRINT "The Eagle" (1926)

He indeed looks happy. No doubt about it And a nice heirloom to be able to pass down the generations, that's for sure.
In looking at it, it doesn't look like a stone lito (to me) but more like a silkscreen type print or maybe done in some other medium? Here is the stone litho for the US OS, as a comparison. There is more detail in the shading, texture and rich color on the poster.
But it's still a very cool piece, regardless. And something, I'm sure, that family cherishes and always will.

Beautiful stone litho for the film, 365 Nights in Hollywood (1934)
I dont know this movie. I found a brief synopsis:
Down-on-his-luck film director Jimmie Dale takes a job at a fly-by-night acting school. He is drawn into the plans of the school's owner to bilk a wealthy young man out of the funds he has supplied to shoot a movie starring pretty student Alice Perkins. But Jimmie hopes to bilk the bilkers by actually completing the movie as ostensibly planned.

While the above is litho is indeed beautiful, I was remembering that I had seen another version (same imagery) but with a bit more detail (note the rider on the horse and the horse itself, and the figure on the right, as a couple examples).
I'm thinking this version was the first release OS, that was created. The one above, was a later RR, redone/redrawn, but based on this poster art.
This, to me, is another stunning and amazing poster. It gets two of these.. bed1 bed1

Love the art of Karoly Grosz.
He did most of the best Universal Monster movie posters.
Being his posters are rarely signed, I'd love to find some sort of definitive listing of his works.

Here's a few others he did, but there is so little info available.

I've recently read that Grosz also did this Dracula?

Maybe Crowzilla Sean has more insight?

Seems to make some sense, if Grosz was the Universal horror department's go-to poster artist.
It really is too bad that more US posters went unsigned. I guess staff artists had no place Id'ing their work, and were hired to simply produce the product.
The terrific artists from back then sure need to be recognized more fully. But I'm thinking many poster artists from that golden age will never be identified. :'(

I believe Grosz is also credited with the art on the US OS for The Old Dark House (1932) bed1

Another that Ive always really liked a lot.

one thing i've learned over the years is that stone litho maniac ma500969 always gets what he wants, so while this one's not in the books just yet, it might as well be. Great looking poster.

Incredible, Jeff! I think it's easy to see how artists like Graham Ingels and Berni Wrightson were influenced by this type of art/content (even though they may not have seen this exact poster design). This Belgian poster is beautiful in its art and, to me, powerful for the time and life of its story. Transcends just a movie poster from where I sit. Okie

I don't know who these 2 artists are, Okie, but I'll look them up. Im curious about their styles and subject matter, since you mentioned them.
And it's too bad that the FREAKS poster isnt signed. It would be great to know who did this amazing looking piece, for sure.

I think you probably will know their work, Jeff. See below...
Graham Ingels: one of the great EC Comics artists, whose iconic drawing of the Ghoulunatic "Old Witch" host, spooked many a youth in the 1950s.
Berni Wrightson: Co-creator and original artist on Swamp Thing. Also, Berni illustrated an immensely popular version of Frankenstein.
Okie
