Title: Favorite Purchases of 2023
Post by: Monster_A_GoGo on December 09, 2023, 02:38:42 PM

2023 is rapidly drawing to a close. I may be stepping on Thierry/EatBrie’s toes with this (but I have for the last few years), but it is time to share your FAVORITE PURCHASES OF THE YEAR! Whoo hoo!
Mine are below. However, as on my own posts, I am still traveling with only my phone/iPad and I cannot “right click” on either, so I can’t figure out how to post the photos. So, unfortunately, I have post a link to my personal blog page where my list for the year is made out. Take a look if you are curious:

https://mymoviepostercollectionagogo.blogspot.com/2023/12/the-shock-o-rama-poster-show-2023.html

Now please! Share your favorite purchases for 2023. Let’s see what floated your boat this year!
Cheers!

WOWzer! Some great stuff there. I’d never seen the British version of NIGHTMARE (NIGHTMARES IN A DAMAGED BRAIN). That was a treat. But you have so many other great ones. My fave is the William Castle MACABRE though. Sweet! Congratulations!

Great selection Monsters-A-Gogo! I own all those posters except for Deep Red and Abbot & Costello Meet the Invisible Man.  I recently saw a screening of The Maze in 3D at my local art house cinema (they had a wonderful festival of early 3D movies from the years 1953-1954, where I also caught Dial M for Murder, House of Wax, Creature from the Black Lagoon, It Came from Outer Space and I, the Jury all shown in gloriously restored 3D), it was so much fun!

Mark, I love your Macabre and H-Man quads.  Sweet Smell of Success is one of my favorite movies, it's a fantastic film!

I'll post my 10 best of 2023 in a couple of days.

Hi Antoine! Thanks for checking in and I am looking forward to seeing your favorite purchases of the year. (And I apologize that mine were posted elsewhere instead of here. I’m technically challenged while away from home…)
SO COOL you got to see those old 3D films in glorious 3D!!!! I’m so jealous!!!! I’d love to see them all that way. Good for you!
Cheers!

A fine selection there across Monster, redman and Mark's posts. I love the art and vibrant colours of Miracle in Soho, I had to google to confirm the artist - Renato Fratini.

MARDUKAS: Nice stuff! MY BLOODY VALENTINE is an 80s slasher classic. I love the HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY quad (and want one myself!), the Asian (Japanese?) JAWS THE REVENGE with the image of the woman in the shark’s mouth should have been used more/-to pull in more business. I love the film…but it is a stinker. I’ve never heard of SUTURE. Hmmm… I’m curious now… Thanks for sharing.

Great posters from everyone.  Wow!

Mark, your "Repos du Guerrier" quad is astonishing.  It's beautiful and extremely upsetting since I don't own it.

I thought you'd like that one Thierry.  The US title for Repos Du Guerrier is Love On A Pillow. The UK's "Warriors Rest" title, as used in the UK,  was professionally "painted" on to the poster after it was printed. It looks to be removable and if it is cleaned off the US title will be revealed.

Cool selection, Neo. The Delos Adventure looks fun.

Cool selection, Neo. The Delos Adventure looks fun.

Thanks.  It was one of my most frugal years but I'm happy that I scored these.  Ms. Neumann's portrait in The Delos Adventure is really nice in person - one of the sharpest portraits I've seen on a poster.  Also interesting that it was her last film.

It would be cool if you and others shared some of your favorites of the year, but I understand if y'all don't want to -  difficult to select favorites among all the great acquisitions.

Apologies for arriving to this thread late! I was sick all through the holidays. faint2.gif
Although I had to slow down my collecting last year, I was still able to make many great purchases...probably more than I should have! A lot of rare grabs that are hard to find - again probably why I spent more than I wanted to!

(https://i.postimg.cc/BtvzQHgX/16candles.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/BtvzQHgX)
Sixteen Candles Spanish One Sheet. It is unfortunately linenbacked, but I had never seen this variant of the poster before so I had to grab it! I really love the artwork compared to the more basic US One Sheet. It makes it seem much more like a fun teen sex comedy! Definitely a classic film, but not my favorite of the 80s John Hughes films.

(https://i.postimg.cc/V5TKfTvV/aerobicide.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/V5TKfTvV)
Killer Workout Lebanese One Sheet, seen here under the alternative title Aerobicide. Was very happy to finally grab this one - posters for this film are extremely rare and it's one of my favorite 80s slashers!

(https://i.postimg.cc/ykcyV8wD/bufordsbeachbunnies.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/ykcyV8wD)
Buford's Beach Bunnies Video Poster. Another poster that is very rare but not really worth much due to how forgotten the film is. Yet another sex comedy film I adore so I was happy to finally catch one after hunting for so long. My fiance and I reference this film quite often.

(https://i.postimg.cc/Lgdg7z4N/catcreeps.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Lgdg7z4N)
The Cat Creeps Three Sheet. Beautiful artwork on this one. I got the remastered film through Vinegar Syndrome and knew I had to grab a poster for it. Very nearly got my hands on the six sheet as well but had to settle for just this one. Can't wait to frame it someday!

(https://i.postimg.cc/cr0rn1vg/fasttimesaus.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/cr0rn1vg)
Fast Times At Ridgemont High Australian One Sheet. Another classic film that is special to me. I prefer this artwork to the US One Sheet. This one is also rare so I was happy to find one.

(https://i.postimg.cc/SYrQr8nX/fridaythe13thpart2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/SYrQr8nX)
Friday The 13th Part 2 Turkish One Sheet. The artwork here is so much better than the US One Sheet! Had my eyes on it for a while and decided to grab it along with several other Turkish posters for combined shipping.

(https://i.postimg.cc/ZBzys85j/gidgetgoeshawaiian3sheet.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/ZBzys85j)
Gidget Goes Hawaiian Three Sheet. My very first three sheet and it's a beautiful one! Again just beautiful artwork for a fun film. Would love to display it with other posters for the Gidget films someday!

(https://i.postimg.cc/jDGWCHPK/gimmeanf.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/jDGWCHPK)
Gimme An F Australian Video poster. Yet another film where posters are extremely rare or nonexistent, so I was happy to get one! I think the design could have been better but I can't complain!

(https://i.postimg.cc/R6TqP28V/goodgirlsgotoparis.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/R6TqP28V)
Good Girls Go To Paris 40x60. My oldest and again one of the rarest I own. Very fun film and it displays beautifully.

(https://i.postimg.cc/0bjrfWCP/hottubsquad.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/0bjrfWCP)
Hollywood Hot Tubs UK Quad, one of my favorite 80s sex comedies. This one came direct from the artist's own personal collection. Really love the alternative artwork here.

(https://i.postimg.cc/Mc7GThzb/melvingermanposter.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Mc7GThzb)
Melvin, Son Of Alvin German Poster. Like so many others on this list, here's another film where posters can be extremely rare or nonexistent so I was happy to grab this one. Really love the unique artwork!

(https://i.postimg.cc/9rDFT4Wf/midnightlace.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/9rDFT4Wf)(https://i.postimg.cc/3dzrZKRF/pillowtalk.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/3dzrZKRF)
Six Sheets for the Doris Day films Pillow Talk & Midnight Lace. Doris is one of my favorite actresses so naturally I have to show my love by acquiring these! Pillow Talk was my very first six sheet and the film itself is one of Doris' finest! Will be so happy to be able to display it someday!

(https://i.postimg.cc/N9FZVHC9/newyorksfinestrussian.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/N9FZVHC9)
New York's Finest Russian Poster. I just couldn't believe that I was able to find a poster like this for such a forgotten film and can't imagine very many of these exist. Very unique and for one of my all-time favorite films!

(https://i.postimg.cc/4ntW3Pc4/sexkittenshalfsheet.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/4ntW3Pc4)
Sex Kittens Go To College Half Sheet. Signed by Mamie Van Doren. I absolutely love her!

(https://i.postimg.cc/svrwGWPY/sororitybabes.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/svrwGWPY)
Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama poster. Yet another rare one where a long time can go by without seeing one. Really great artwork for a fun film.

(https://i.postimg.cc/jCzhT5VL/surf2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/jCzhT5VL)
Surf 2 One Sheet. An uncommon poster for a fun film with great artwork.

(https://i.postimg.cc/QFnQmK7n/tammytrex.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/QFnQmK7n)
Tammy and the T-Rex Pakistan One Sheet. No idea why the name was changed, but I was super happy to find an alternative poster for this gem of a film!

(https://i.postimg.cc/YjwsYTML/virginhigh.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/YjwsYTML)
Virgin High One Sheet. Another uncommon poster for a fun sex comedy starring Linnea Quigley.

(https://i.postimg.cc/8JgtdrQg/wheretheboyare3sheet.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/8JgtdrQg)(https://i.postimg.cc/47vwWNs7/wheretheboysarehalfsheet.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/47vwWNs7)
Where The Boys Are Half Sheet and Three Sheet. This one is another film that holds a special place in my heart (although I prefer the 80s remake). So happy to have some posters for it - especially the larger three sheet!

Looks like 2023 was a good year for you, HM.  I haven't heard of a lot of the titles, but based on the artwork and your descriptions they look like fun.  Interesting how some films get forgotten over time and become more obscure.  Congrats on the wins.

HEATHER: Wowzer!!! You got your first 3-sheets and 6-sheets (I have yet to venture into 6-sheets). Good for you being so adventurous! I love my 3-sheets….and may try a 6-er or two eventually. And nice pickups. I have the AEROBICIDE and FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2. (So naturally those get a thumbs up. Ha!). THE CAT CREEPS….oooo that is fabulous! BUFORD’S BEACH BUNNIES? Never heard of it, but now I want to track the movie down based on your description. So jealous of the SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-A-RAMA. Nice score there. Amazing pick ups for you all around.

There's NOTHING new to see here. I am back home briefly and thought I would actually POST my images (instead of the link to my blog pages). Here are the top 10 faves o' mine that I added in 2023:

Runner up) THE MAZE (3-D on linen):
While not the most exciting of posters (Yes, it’s kind of dull.), it’s a vintage 3-D move poster from the first wave in the 1950s. Yahoo! Despite being on linen, it’s still a great find. This actually WAS included in my Top 10 for the year until another poster came along at the last minute that I like better. Instead of cutting it out, I just gave it the title of “runner up”.  I’m still thrilled to have it.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg35lCgpQMYUvyICiqNNNgvKqGi8FZVnMAhyz8huAQ0p4aFs5DTvQ4PHC2R5AMs7SXCu4MIQAxQchT-Ycvdn82HO2uGhqORvkvFULZ4wSdOzu-DYeA16d13HUKi4tevMnVmpPin97jokxyts1sEIVsCheunrSeVQnsGXfa1CM8VVoMdkt8glhvWrKavPYk/w462-h640/The%20Maze%203D.jpg)

10) DEEP RED:
This should probably be further down the list as I have been after one of these forever. But why dicker? It made the list, didn’t it? Hooray!
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEingdW9yT6gQ4-wpNU8ZgrivVz6KZU99mDnccrkkmSOVInEswaRr5e2a_nT00CG05Knyv9BVPJu23IvB4dKWYSE1p131j-f0IEZ-liZdboHDJTqoX7eCePFwYBbAhcHw8-Tyu8wAouIniNRhfb8pqqjkYQSlOeEJ48AQfVcuPlUSAXVNPxVeSQGeReKM4g/w500-h640/Deep%20Red.jpg)

9) THE LAND UNKNOWN (linen):
Yowza!!! This is such a cool poster. What a nice end-of-the-year score for me. (This was one of the last things I got this year…just in time for my last post of new acquisitions for 2023.) It’s so colorful and has so much going on in it…unlike the actual movie.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMLABUvy95Kpp8el99TsdLDofWcH3n4WDZspR5OdgFqFOlmxb4OyjLnCZRS_q1hCxTizhf-fNo3yzWICxLezK8Xm1HUI0f0bcJDGkc69DWgDyS8Gj9uKh5C84v28TPhnJd-y3lanYq7q5Sp6cazJXDs397R4kPZi3HiIjWYZwXPf3SbMivdSTxbgAJ7Ec/w426-h640/D4EEB207-FB2F-4E61-8BFE-E6D0629B89B5.jpeg)

8) THE BIRDS (linen):
Another poster I have been trying to get all of my collecting life. On linen—but what the flying f*%#!?! It’s now or never. I ain’t gonna live forever…
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjhMz6FQ5AI0e-SkX4nD27fCyjy_NoHrPef69-I5kgIdbSUlrQTFARAGWW9xe6-Elnehi4t8HYc0OIe_uerYnAfEbEXnwSOXTtGUO7wnKQ4MwNQlDE_y-WFtIpYQmLkKPeHHIb4IQIHuK8TpoTFq4sfidMc5hZbjcn8QAYnCy7Puu7ECQi5YB3V_Itkdg/w428-h640/birds_linen_WC37405_B.jpg)

7) MONSTER ON CAMPUS (linen):
Zowie! Another Reynold Brown classic! (Also on linen, but…)
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh63jeB__rabwWjH4Jq3_lQgpeIgQ2W9ivV5Be_wRzPhhPvdeIhl9AuDLFnspoYBcQz7ERnr7Y7UOXw8lxFfKb5ltBmhdgiKryLm2-JCqBK11f4-mysi6VZt3XTWKr8bcLudiw23xHF1V3GyjtRgtd6ET1oiJywPe9NTa-27lJxR-JL7PWtGkYyA4GT/w428-h640/monster_on_the_campus_linen_WC36934_B%20bb.jpg)

6) THE MAD GHOUL (linen):
Somehow I had never heard of this flick until this green and blue beauty of a poster caught my eye. Yes, it’s on linen…but I still love it.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg_119Dk8xylqp98Di6N9NpmF8kFF8zfFucicjwfi8C9xssogAeW6ime82KzlywTFuYxLdZOIUcIa-T93kes5r9ftTO-5QCYbQWCOUEo6PT4K4NEbAe4j6Mv4Lm717xrlRhrp2KUhqTwRgpoug1Q9kHdE27UsfRZkk6fL0Ye59YM6LfxLNUsBaGXgP/w432-h640/THE%20MAD%20GHOUL.jpg)

5) ISLE OF THE DEAD (re-release on linen):
Yowza! I so am thrilled to have this creepy portrait of Karloff on this poster. I said when I originally posted this, despite this being a rerelease—I have always preferred this version to the completely different original release poster.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw13tedXeG7s3-IGPg0Q9a755j3nTr7Z4Db_f4jIvnXsT6YgPD7-Saie6TW02F0lQUGwLGi_s-m9O9Oz7IhYMN_jWffv_psL79bg5zf0Sk_nQPkV46neV-QNfkDbwRHF_7j74wClmf65oCk9wW07yYcylKmkL726edgezKLXO1DnnI5wGOqWXw-3HNFvQ/w434-h640/isle_of_the_dead_R53_linen_WC37406_B%20bbb.jpg)

4) THE RAVEN (linen):
FINALLY! I have one. Do I need to continue my search for one? “Quoth the raven, nevermore…” (Well a swell one without the linen would be sweet, but…)
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwGLgArbYTCUKZlMjOXcvkDIzXxNNkg-Nj-RPVB7MHz1k_ZXJb8zsyTNRChuVF0DoJ_UgWmW001a1oViftKOwV1DIY858XzEUyl0SCrIIbioVT23FzFKUkTyXl38CFyVlzmRiW-KDIiiRbSCQ5PAQ51O6DJCe34TOWGR3-d2A4JsHqLsg_tASbkjRv68M/w422-h640/CC20D849-EEFF-4110-B2C7-948D885D91FC.jpeg)

3) THE INVISIBLE MAN’S REVENGE (linen):
Universal horror? Even if it is just the 5th (and last—until he went comedy with Abbott and Costello) and not scary at all, I will gladly add it to my collection.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJq33360WXWHYYqT-SvE9l192rEn8hvp-7pkJpNqwBVTIYhJc8rTa5a6UQbXjSO0SYmD74wi-pdUvO-C3XZuaUBFIymk8vF7p-FB4urLh5Q04xFgaYKsr7CVVCvFNrtGAUIlLmSLQbtwFf5JbYh3dCZF7Oi9OICJn3C5O55FCSSEKkcYFpksLEcDL35pA/w428-h640/Invisible%20Mans%20Revenge.jpg)

2) ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE INVISIBLE MAN (linen):
ANOTHER linenbacked poster… Blah! (If you are keeping score, only 1 of the 10 in this year’s list is without linenbacking…) It is such a nice, colorful poster. I love how the Invisible Man is portrayed as well.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMzMzKQbIk0xLjMA4EHnnnuuvKoMLgJSUC5L-VCBLnJeC399fUZ08amNbAu1MNb4wu9o8XAGsQN8TQZRx4juFfeSRgSVk1XpCyIERWgsWgpJkrm2FpmeHNJq5QACJUa7fK8suz8G0UsJ9nMGJmaxkCwMk-LdN_WmmvxVmoKBpecJfxhm9PHOpuonDpySw/w422-h640/D67A1F66-1DB6-4F5F-B21F-0411A620A7D7.jpeg)

1) SHE GODS OF SHARK REEF (linen):
While the movie may not be all that good, getting this poster excited me more than any other this year. This year was the year of the tiki bar. While my bar is NOT done yet. I need an electrician--but that will have to wait until next spring as I am “wintering” in California this year (mid-October through mid-February). Yet this poster was framed and up on the wall (on the wall on the first landing leading down to the tiki room). It's sort of a welcome to the bar and sets the mood. (My bar is called Monster-A-GoGo's Gruesome Grotto!) Hot diggity!

That’s it. What exciting things did YOU find this year???

Happy hunting in 2024.

CHEERS!

I'm a little late to the party this year, though wanted to comment and post a couple, too.

Monster: Is this perhaps your best year ever, even though you say you aren't collecting as much?  Those sure are many great posters you displayed for classic horror and suspense movies.  Who's really the Mad Ghoul here???!!! Nice going!

Redman: Yes, so nice to see your Lady and the Tramp Polish poster.

Marklawd: Wow, all original folded quads!  You really did well. All the incredible color and depth on Miracle in SOHO really caught my eye.

Mardukas: That Jaws poster is right in your face scary!  Man, Salem's Lot was spookier than I expected when I first watched it back when it was on TV in 1979.  I hadn't seen the video poster until you posted it.  The use of just three colors works well for the design.

Antoine1973: So much incredible movie paper you got in 2023! Makes me long for the collecting days of yore and wishing I would have been more brave. Incredible!!!

Neo: I love Fifth Element! I wonder how Delos Adventure gal keeps her machine gun dry?! Nice adventure you had collecting in 2023!

HeatherMason: What a cool mix of posters you got. I think the 16 Candles Spanish is so much better than the US paper and it's painted! I really like the Cat Creeps 3 sheet!  Your Pillow Talk six sheet would sure look great framed and up on the wall, eh?!

Here's a few I bought last year:

(https://i.postimg.cc/rzKfhpBg/Captive-Wild-Woman-1-sht.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/rzKfhpBg)

A nice, unbacked one sheet for Captive Wild Woman. See, Antoine, I'm learning.  Really, just got lucky.

(https://i.postimg.cc/T5yMfMtb/Strobel-s-Aeroplanes-poster-smaller.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/T5yMfMtb)

Forgive me, this isn't movie paper, though it is one of my very favorite poster acquisitions from 2023.  Charles Strobel was famous for his early aeroplane and airship shows and also in the early air races. Strobel also owned and named the Toledo Mud Hens baseball team. Since this poster is quite fragile, I will have this important early aviation poster linen backed and restored to help ensure it lasts for several more 100+ years.

(https://i.postimg.cc/fk2tWcRj/Heaven-on-Earth-1931-one-sheet.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/fk2tWcRj)

I just love this beautiful stone litho poster for Heaven on Earth. Glad I got it the second time around.

(https://i.postimg.cc/Sn7zhw2j/Son-of-Frankenstein-1-sht-Argentinean-1939.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Sn7zhw2j)

Well, I thought I took a picture before I framed Son of Frankenstein, though can't find it. I really am so happy to get this Argentinean original 1939 poster.  I was surprised to remember I bought this earlier in 2023 as it seems so long ago for some reason now.

I raise a glass to several really good friends, who were also collectors, that passed away in 2023. I'm glad for the memories of good times together.

Happy Mardi Gras and Carnival everyone!  Okie

Well shut the front door… Zowie, Okie! You only posted 4… but those 4 have my jaw dropped all of the way to the floor. Yowza, senor!! While CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN (with Aquanetta!!) and SON OF FRANKENSTEIN are, of course, my favorites here, the vintage airplane poster and especially that gorgeous HEAVEN ON EARTH one sheet are freaking fantastic!!! Bravo, sir!

MAGG, I don't know how I missed The She Gods of Shark Reef. What a great title and wild shark film artwork.  Added the film to my queue.  8)

Well done there, Okie.  You always have such interesting history and important pieces to share here.  Heaven on Earth is stunning and the one with them old school aeroplanes although not move related is amazing.  Good call on having it preserved for future generations.

Hey Neo. Glad you like the poster, but… Don’t get too excited about the movie. It’s not all that good. Hopefully you find a good quality transfer if you do decide to see it.
Cheers

Fantastic 4, Okie!  Captive Wild Woman is my favorite poster in this less-than-stellar trilogy (the title font alone is awesome, and the classic lady-and-gorilla composition is iconic).  I haven't seen That Heaven on Earth but I this stone litho is truly magnificent (it caught my eye when I first saw it at Heritage a couple of years ago before another copy popped up at Propstore last year).

MAGG, She Gods of Shark Reef belongs to the very small category of movies I've never seen that I own paper for (hard to resist such a great Reynold Brown image after all!).  I usually make a point of having watched all the films that I collect posters for.  With She Gods, I've always suspected that the movie itself would be disappointing so I haven't made any effort to seek it out, so I'm glad to hear you confirming that's the case.

It’s not horrible. It’s just not very good. The best part about it is the Reynold Brown poster! Glad you’ve got one, too. It’s awesome. Cheers!

Thank you, Monster, Neo, and Antoine!  Antoine, I believe the Heaven on Earth one sheet is the exact same one that both HA and Propstore auctioned. So, still the only one I've ever seen.  Neo, some of those early air shows were filmed, so there is hope a short film was shot way back then.  Gosh, if only that early film stock had been more stable...    Okie
