Title: Ghibli Posters - Reproductions (sold by the Ghibli Museum in Japan)
Post by: Hicks77 on December 20, 2022, 12:59:11 AM
Recently on auction / resale sites in Japan I noticed A LOT of Ghibli posters coming up at very low set prices.
Like $50 for a My Neighbor Totoro B2.
So I dug around a bit and it turns out that the Ghibli Museum's online store has started selling reproductions of the Ghibli catalogue.
These posters are B2, have an eirin mark and look like the real deal.
The description says that the posters were made from the original prints, using Ghibli's "special colors".

Here's a link to the store https://www.ghibli-museum-shop.jp/ (https://www.ghibli-museum-shop.jp/)
You can scroll down to the 2nd Green Category Heading (Interior) and click on that.
(The first green category heading is fashion - shows some bags)

Or you can google translate "poster" , copy and paste the translation into the search bar and it'll take you to the page.

So watch out for any pristine copies being sold; they may be reprints from the museum store.

Thanks for sharing, Hicks77. I saw that they were releasing a set of reprinted posters and wondered if they'd start hitting the market as originals. I might buy one to do a comparison to see if there are any differences (paper type, perhaps?).

I think they have sold reprints of their posters in the past (in a nice black box), so I have always been a bit careful with them and have preferred B1s. At least this latest run seems limited (it is sold out on the Ghibli Museum site), so hopefully they'll go into fans' hands and not too many will be resold as originals.

This is great, useful information Hicks77!  Thanks so much for posting it.

I took a look and they are all options are listed is sold out. At about US$500 for the set of B2s, that would have been about $22 each which isn't that bad.  They are fantastic posters.

Ebay shows on seller  listing the set for nearly $1200.  Lots of listings for subsets and singles.  I agree that soon enough, we will start seeing these being offered up as minty originals, intentionally by some, unwittingly by others.  Anyone collecting B2s needs to beware, for sure.

If anyone actually can do a comparison between the reprint and the original, it would be nice to know if there are any hallmarks of authenticity we can rely on.

I wish we knew how many sets of these are flying around out there.

Thanks for the comments you guys!
And just to muddy the waters even further, there's one up for auction now and the seller was asked:
"Is this poster from the original release or is it from the Ghibli Museum?
The seller replied that he got it at the cinema shop in 2006.
 :o

Collectors have always got to beware and use good sense plus a healthy does of skepticism, and even then, we get burned from time to time.  One of the things we tried to do over the years is make APF a resource for everyone to avoid getting burned.  I still have all the old authentication stuff that I had up years ago, and I should set about getting that back online asap.  But, there's not much new there.  I think it's all online if you've savvy and building search queries.

Have been sorting my posters the last few weeks and had a chance to compare 2 Porco Rosso posters I have.
One I got a few years ago and has been sitting in a poster file.
The other I got about 6 months ago.
At the time, I didn't know about the Ghibli Museum selling reprints of the movie posters.

Pretty sure, that the new poster I got is a museum reprint.
On the reprint, the colors are not as deep, the clouds are not as defined and the paper feels thicker and with less of a sheen than the original poster.
When laid side by side, the difference in the sky and cloud colors are quite apparent.  As well, the main title is a much lighter / orangish red.

In the pictures, the reprint is on the left and the original is on the right.

Luckily, I didn't spend much on the reprint!

Nice comparison photos, thanks for sharing.

It's good that there's a difference! I wonder if a similar differences exist for the others too?

Thanks for the comments Tob and cmcdoge  :)
Tob, I have a Princess Mononoke; if I can snag a reprint for under $30, I'll probably get one just to compare.
cmcdoge, that curve is weird ..... hmmmmm

They used a rolled copy, and it was not flat on the scanning bed when they did the initial scan.
