Just got this rolled "Follow Me" from 1969 from Cinemasterpieces. Very cool to have a 41 year old poster that is rolled. Anybody else want to share a picture of one of your older rolled posters?
-
Don't have pics handy of my personal stuff that is both older and rolled, but I am always amazed as to what shows up from time to time that is almost unheard of in anything but folded condition.
Case in point: I have seen firsthand both a rolled White Christmas OS and Dr. No OS (first issue) in person.
And no, they were not on linen and no, they were not gently folded initially and subsequently stored flat for decades. I am talking true blue rolled one sheets that made it out of the NSS printing facility unscathed.
I know a source who owns and has has also seen crazier stuff rolled that just seems impossible...I am going to check in with him to see what the titles were since I am not remembering right now and don't want to misspeak.
-
My friend/acquaintance had a set of the first three James Bond/Sean Connery quads in unfolded pristine collection - I just couldn't afford what he wanted at the time - I think they were subsequently bought by a London dealer for his private collection.

Cool stuff guys. I just randomly ran across this extraordinary poster - a rolled 1961(!) advance DOUBLE-SIDED (!!) poster for Breakfast at Tiffany's. That's thirty years before double-sided posters become common. Two have sold at Christie's and Heritage for big bucks. It "was evidently produced to be used at the premier roadshow engagements of this film."
-
Yeah, most of my rolled late 60s/early 70s posters were special type posters -- aka my Van Hammersveld Get Carter, etc...
I do have a few rolled, regular NSS issue posters that I consider pretty rare though. Chief of which is probably my 1978 Dawn of the Dead -- not the special 16mm poster which is often found rolled, but the regular NSS issue.
-
Dawn of the Dead, thats a great score rolled there, Harry.
Another one I saw firsthand was a Vertigo OS rolled. My jaw hit the floor, I couldn't get over it. The back of it had some very light notes written in pencil about printing preferences and changes to get all of them 'looking like this one-FINAL'. How cool is that...
(As an aside, I really like notes and such on the back of posters if the writing isn't through to the other side of course...love the historical aspects of these things and the story each one tells...I think about stuff like that...very dorky I guess.)
I have a rolled Logan's Run OS, straight from an old NSS source who pulled it off the press and took it home because he liked it. Now I get to like it...ha. Not the biggest deal in the world, but still kinda cool. I have many older Moore Bond posters all rolled. Some rarer 80s titles rolled that are tough as hell to find...some other stuff. I just need to dig through my tubes and finally start to flatten some stuff.

That is pretty insane. Definitely a one-off piece.

This is the grandmother of all rolled posters:
The man who ran the press at Morgan Litho was so impressed he took home one of each style, and almost 60 years later his son consigned them to me, and I sold this one (with the solo Dietrich) for $46,200!
It looked unbelievable in person. No foldlines, no backing, no restoration!

What else did this consignor have Bruce?
-
While Bruce clearly holds the floor for the present, I do have a rolled OHMSS quad, which I love.
But I will hand back to Bruce now.
-
The consignor's dad had taken home one of each style from The Devil is a Woman. I auctioned the other one a year later and it went for $13,800.
He said his dad told him he just thought the one with a single image of Dietrich was a wonderful poster, and he took that (and the other style) straight from the press (he apparently worked by the presses, but I don't know what he did exactly) home, and they stayed rolled in his basement! Apparently he never had the urge to take anything else home, before or after. Imagine if he (or the studio) had thought to keep one each from EVERY movie, rolled off the presses!
The images do not come close to doing the posters justice. The colors were so rich and vibrant, because the posters were never displayed in any way. And no fold lines really helps the visual appeal in person.
Bruce
-
The colours look pretty bloody gorgeous in the images.
Lovely.
Nice story too.
-
Those posters are Fantastic Bruce, it must have been a treat just to see them in the flesh as it were.
-
Yes, but their presence has also ruined this thread! :P
Hey guys... I have a rolled 1979 Alien NSS!
(crickets)
-
Still haven't heard any admiration for my rolled Logan's Run, THE poster to beat in this thread thus far...come one, someone pat me on the back! ;)

Sorry for the terrible pic, it was taken over 2 years ago before our new camera...its in better shape than it looks, even.
Too bad Bruce's consignee didn't see this one before they handed over Marlene to eMovie. I would have traded straight up.
-
Wonka it is cool...Ofcourse I liked the movie and was an Agutter fan back in the day.
-
rolled poster fans will be in hog heaven for my next 2 auctions

I have a Follow Me one sheet like Mel (same source), which is the earliest rolled US one sheet I have (69). I have about five rolled titles from 1970, but one of the jewels in my collection is my Dirty Harry US one sheet. I have the 80s (early 90s?) restrike and never thought I'd own a rolled original (71) so I was very happy when I located one about a year ago. It has a few light creases in the bottom half, but is in excellent shape overall.
Wonka: That Logan's Run is a beauty - love the artwork. I have a rolled advance, but it loses the lower chunk of art.

We originally had 6 or 7 of those rolled Follow Me one sheets. I think we only have 1 or 2 left now.
Check out this color progressive proof set that we also had:
A few years ago we acquired a collection of rolled one sheets from 1968-72 that included a ton of lesser known titles, as well as several awesome ones. We had bullitt intl., barbarella intl., a clockwork orange X, dirty harry, yellow submarine, etc. etc. We still have several left, mostly of the lesser known titles. They came from a studio exec. who had the privilege of going to the nss printing facility and just taking whatever he wanted, so he did! Most things he just took one of, but sometimes he took several if he really liked the poster.
We have also dealt with several sources that have had rolled one sheets from the 70's, These were guys who used to work at the print shop and they saved some stuff over the years. Gore graphics in California had a lot of light-fingered employees!

Rolled posters......................I don't know if I should post this, though remember as we get older we get wiser.
I was at a film fair in London in 1979 a dealer was offering 3 Bond posters for Ł21 which I thought was too much. He came after me later and offered them for Ł18 which I accepted. One of them was a style "c" YOLT that was rolled. As I still lived at home space was an issue, so...........I..........Folded it.

A couple of years when I was starting out I bought some metric IKEA frames (700mm x 1000mm (27.5" x. 39.25") and folded and trimmed several one sheet posters to fit them....

Harry.. it's a commercial art print that was released simultaneously with the film's release. Kicks ass without the titles and credits

Is that the one from eBay a few weeks back that came with a Rocky I 1-sheet as well? I was very tempted on that one! By far the best II poster I've seen.

definitely is the best of all the Rocky posters followed by the Rocky 4 poster where Stallone is wrapped in a flag

1949 Casablanca re release rolled 1sh
Certainly not the oldest or prettiest, but still pretty cool, and 62 years young.

I really like the sort of wax wash effect on the Casablanca and the muted red is excellent.
Great post..

There is some debate about the correct year for this poster on MOPO, but it looks like it is from '49 and that there were two versions:
http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=660&Lot_No=28289
http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=640&Lot_No=28813
-
It is definitely from 1949. Heritage has sold both versions. The other one is basically the same image with a bit more color and it is definitely much nicer.

This is my Rolled 1st release Quad from 56.

Just found my framed Marnie languishing in a corner of my bedroom... it's in the condition I found it, pretty gnarly, but I'd never noticed before there's no evidence of folding.

It seems like more pre-1980 quads can be found rolled than pre-1980 one sheets, which are almost always folded. Is that correct and any reason for it?
-
I also so have a Frankenstein and the monster from hell, and a One million years B.C./She D/B that are rolled also. I know there was extra posters printed of these two, as well as Dracula has risen from the grave. As at the time if you wrote to Hammer they would send you a poster. Hence quite low prices for these titles due to the extras printed, and I know Quite a few of these were never folded.
I think you are onto something there Mel, maybe Terry know's something. "Calling Quadbod". Makes a change from Quadbod calling.
-
I'd argue that that wasn't the case based on 15 years of collecting. I've found pre-1980 rolled quads are significantly harder to find than rolled pre-1980 one sheets, but I'd be interested to see if Terry agrees.
-
I do have several rolled Quads, and have hardly seen any rolled 1shts, pre-80. It does seem right, though I've only been collecting for 37 years. ;)

Did anyone here nab this rather beautiful rolled quad for Rosemary's Baby that went on ebay last week? If so, congrats! I had a go, but alas, my pockets weren't deep enough. Lovely poster that looks to be in amazing condition.

A beautiful, rolled quad for ROSEMARY'S BABY?
Wouldn't surprise me to see it pop up on Ed209uk's Film On Paper site...
Eddie has more rolled quads than any collector I've seen.

That was my initial thought too, Ted! Hopefully Ed did snag it so I can lust over the nice high res images and an interesting write up on his site.
-
Ha! Good guess chaps :)
I couldn't really resist as it's a lovely poster and one that rarely shows up folded, let alone rolled. I particularly like the added detail of the cinema info in the bottom corner. Look for it on the site next year. thumbup

;D Great score Ed, beautiful poster and I think it was a really good price too. Looking forward to seeing it up on your site.

Good for you, Ed!
Great movie and classic design in pristine condition.
I definitely prefer the landscape quad over the one-sheet for that image. thumbup

These are a couple of unfolded quads I bought in the Cameo auction this week, now safely contained in mylar pockets:-
Our Man In Havana (1958)

Anatomy Of A Murder (1959)

Lovely Mark. I particularly like the Our Man in Havana. Any ideas on the artist?
I knew you'd be at that auction! ;)
BTW what was the condition like on the Taking of Pelham 123 quad? I considered bidding but forgot to ask for a condition report beforehand and it went way above what I was expecting.

Way to go Mark. Both quads are excellent.

I've never seen the quads for either of those titles.
Outstanding acquisitions, Mark!
Rolled to boot...WOW...

Thanks guys. I'd have been in competition with Ed if I had seen that pristine Rosemary's Baby quad - one of my favourite films. Sorry, no idea of the artist on Our Man In Havana - it wasn't on my check list but they had put it on display in the window of the saleroom and the light made the colours really beautiful - it was an impulse buy. As usual, many of the posters in the sale had dreadful tears and tape stains - there was another unfolded Anatomy Of A Murder quad which sold for more than I paid for my better condition lot - there was an enormous rip and someone had written literally hundreds of words on the reverse - the winner of that lot will have a shock. I put a tick against the Taking of Pelham 123 in my catalogue which meant the condition was acceptable - I was going to upgrade my folded copy but the bidding went too high.
Mark
-
Ed and Mark, those are superior posters, IMO. Great examples and crazy rare in the conditions they bring.
Havana is off the wall cool, I would probably frame that one. Very nice to be sure.

it looks to me to be the artist Ray, who also is seen on many Belgian posters of the 50s-70s

This is one of 10 rolled (not linenbacked) posters from the 1931 movie Phantom of the West that Heritage sold yesterday for $4,780 (http://movieposters.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=7072&lotNo=83525). (On closer inspection a couple of them do appear to have folds, however).

Another rolled Jaws one sheet just sold for $1200 on HA.
P.S. Please do not call it "unfolded," an unbearable word that should die a horrible death! gun2
(http://WWW.POSTERNIRVANA.COM/0DNE2/2013-05/Jaws%20%281975%20US%201S%20SSR%29.jpeg)
-
It sure looks unfolded to me
-
I dont want to get into the nomenclature but I would have paid $478 for it. That is if I had $478.
Gratz! to the winner. Its a sweet poster.
-
Maybe it never was rolled, or folded, but kept and delivered flat.
Imagine trying to prove that.
-
Unfolded, is when you open the poster out... I'll unfold it and show you the poster. Now it's unfolded you can see it.
So by definition a unfolded poster must have folds. otherwise you would not be able to unfold it.
-
Here's a few I've unrolled to take a pic of...

Infolded?
Nonfolded?
Confounded?
-
Non-folded is more accurate, than unfolded, Ari. Go to the top of the class... :)
-
I've taken a lot more pics since this thread started, just been looking through some.
And here's a few more rolled posters... Well technically flat, as I store them flat... wynk

I'm sure there will be a few more somewhere...

Ohhh :D bum-titty bum-titty bum

So by definition a unfolded poster must have folds. otherwise you would not be able to unfold it.

Technically this is an unfolded poster as I believe I see a fold. This poster must be removed and put in an unfolded poster thread
-
If a five star poster accidentally gets folded, then unfolded, and was previously rolled, what's my name again?

Shergar..

That's not a fold Steve it's a crease, only goes up part of the way...
-
Creases are try hard folds.
-
Ohhh :D bum-titty bum-titty bum
That poster is my desk top pic at the moment... ;D
-
Creases are try hard folds.
It didn't try very hard, it barely makes it to the bottom of the R..

Ok, so it is a partially unfolded poster

This reminds me after cutting my own hair for 20 years I finally went to a hairdresser and he said... T'ohhh... the back of your head looks like a sheeps arse

I hate when people infold formerly outfolded posters, because it makes the creases far more prominent.

And BTW that Thunderbirds one is super cool

That is beautiful Paul.
Is there any end to the quality movie memorabilia you have amassed over the years?

Thanks Ted, and Yes there is an end, but where... :-\

Just got this rolled "Follow Me" from 1969 from Cinemasterpieces. Very cool to have a 41 year old poster that is rolled. Anybody else want to share a picture of one of your older rolled posters?

Time warp/loop, got another from CMP, stored away for decades by a printing company employee:

Very nice, Mel. Those old westerns, especially the serials have some really nice images, and they tend to go cheap these days.

Don't own POTW, just posting it. Yes HA has sold a fair number of rolled old Western 1Ss.
I do/did own these:

emp has auctioned 15 rolled copies of this poster over the years. Being a modern poster from 1980, I'm guessing there may be a fairly good quantity of these that are still floating or "flying" around? dontknow.gif

i should know this but i don't. how come rolled posters from machine folded times exist?
was there a short test run first or was it the folk at the printing place just making sure the folding part was turned off at end so they get fold-free copies for themselves?
-
Red, good question. Unfortunately I don't know the answer! I do know in the late 80's to early 90's rolled 1-sheets and folded 1-sheets had separate print runs. The copies meant for folding have thin white borders across the top and bottom of the poster. Why this was done is anybody's guess. As a rule, folded 1-sheets were largely phased out around 1982 or 83 but as you can see in this thread, earlier examples do exist.
-
I think there are several correct answers why there are some unfolded Golden Age and earlier posters, Redman. This can include printers' copies, someone taking a copy home, the poster being used for another purpose than mailed out to theatres (think about where old posters have been found over the years), local print and use, and several other possibilities... Okie

From LAMP:
http://www.learnaboutmovieposters.com/newsite/index/articles/fold.asp
WERE ALL PRE-80's POSTERS FOLDED
"When posters were printed, a batch would be pre-folded for shipping. The remainder, quite often, was stored flat. Then, as more was needed to be shipped, another batch would be sent to the folding machines. The folding was due to the fact that it was the most economical way of shipping the poster to the theater.
If a theater owner would come by to pick up their posters, sometimes they could get a rolled poster instead. This seems to have created a lot of controversy in the poster collecting community. However, the majority of the pre-1980's posters found on the market will be folded. When a rolled one is found, it DOES NOT mean that it's not real, it is usually a cause to take a closer look at the poster to make sure that it's not a fake."
-
this poster (http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/4810653.html) was not fully folded. not sure how that could have happened but bruce gave the buyer the option of rolled or flat-package postage ;D
-
It's a little hard to tell from the photo but it looks like the HELP quad was only folded vertically. Sending it rolled was probably a safe bet. Sending it folded vertically would mean using long awkward packaging.
