Title: Favorite Purchases of 2021
Post by: Monster_A_GoGo on December 16, 2021, 02:46:48 AM
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgJJz1fQpcHCuWVPqcpbPMyh4zpVWCqbrGvvkHNGM1cqordhlrt5xK17KEjTDD0DdmcfOw9YflH0rJS-SW3qLw-_8dw0OVHHP_DJOZSPGyeFFvcCIRmQ1dZzxxXWpX-wzARXHZ5hW_urvFa7GSoVWvtzyFfug5MaM2h7qL_jymS7h963-L0jx1mvbp8=w640-h360)
It's that time of the year again--the END. While 2021 was a better year than 2020, it still had a lot to be desired. But that's not to say it was a bad year for poster acquisitions---at least from my perspective. I didn't buy all that many---certainly far fewer than in previous years. However, in preparing this list and looking back on what I got in 2021, I was really pleased with what I had scored.  The ones I've added to this year's list are my favorite pickups. Some things will be noticeably absent, such as my original STAR WARS or CHINATOWN or even the obvious horror hit HALLOWEEN KILLS. While all of those are nice (as are many others I picked up as well), the ones below are the ones that really "did it" for me. Take a gander, if you will. They are in reverse order--with my Number 1 poster pick at the bottom.

20: HELP:
Not the most exciting poster ever...but an original release Beatles poster? (And for a very fun film to boot?) I'll take it! Yahoo!

19: FROGS (Italian 2F):
This is a fun, colorful poster of nature gone wild. As I pointed out when I first shared this purchase, there's not a single frog to be seen on it. Despite the fact it played as FROGS in Italy, I don't think anyone there knew what FROGS meant. "Frogs" in Italian is "rane". Who knows what they thought they were seeing...

18: DOOR TO DOOR MANIAC (aka FIVE MINUTES TO LIVE) (rerelease):
The more I stare at this fun, old image...the more I think I want this hanging up in the house. Apparently this is a re-release of a movie called FIVE MINUTES TO LIVE. AIP picked it up, slapped the new, more exploitative name on it and came up with this far more interesting poster than the original release.

17: YOU:
I had forgotten I had gotten this one. It may not look like much, but I had been after this one for DECADES! It's an exploitation dream come true!

16: INNER SANCTUM:
Fun old school-style poster for a so-so thriller from a no-budget studio who was trying to ride the coattails of Universal's INNER SANCTUM series years earlier.

15: HOTEL RESERVE:
Wow! Great poster art on this one. Very cool for that alone.

14: TARZAN AND THE HUNTRESS (rerelease):
A Weissmuller TARZAN poster...even though it's one of the Sol Lesser TARZAN's? Even though it is a rerelease?--YES! I will take it. GLADLY! Whoo hoo!

13: JUNGLE CRUISE:
A poster for a Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in my top poster list? While I'm not a fan of most of the action star's movies--and I haven't even seen JUNGLE CRUISE yet as I write this--this poster represents far more than a Dwayne Johnson movie. It's the return of painted art to sell a movie--and it is such a nice result. Really. I saw this poster and had to have it--despite having little interest in the film itself (although I do like the ride it is based on...).

12: MOTHRA:
For the longest time I thought I had one of these. I think I may have gotten confused with RODAN. Oh well. It's super to have this one sheet from the GODZILLA monster series. Whoo hoo!

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgrC_G5vjdpUOpMN9OQ37roGroqmP7L4sWirCOkCDxvbBwBEzyVVY2qiaophwRjsptFlWrBwLfR3lnPvbT22wIyuTpv0sC4KRcAl9rJZA_COECtZWapG2IJUWderBAa5p0459PDNdfmxNJNiykcH1lkF7enn9iUd4cfHwqxqfKCSyKXaEyAwuzGqSIM=s16000)

11: QUEEN OF BLOOD:
Golly, it seems like I bought this ages ago--but no. I was just this year. This is such a cool AIP poster for such a so-so movie. I'd rush to the theaters if this poster showed up in theaters today. Zowie!

10: BLACK HOOKER:
Oh my god! I cannot believe I finally actually have one of these blaxploitation gems! The film is supposed to be utter crap--but the poster? WOW!! A trash exploitation classic!

9: SPOOK CHASERS:
Wow! How delightful to come across this old school gem. So kitschy kool. Who-oo-oo!

8: THE INCUBUS (aka INCUBUS: IL POTERE DEL MALE) (Italian 2F):
WOW! Great spooky poster for this fright flick--much nicer than the US one sheet.  LOVE it!

7: CRY OF THE WEREWOLF:
Even though this poster has some issues, I am thrilled to have scored this obscure (I'd never heard of it) old werewolf movie poster. It may not be Universal horror...but those are hard to find. These obscure old ones are almost as cool--and nearly as rare in some cases.

6: FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN (Military re-release):
Speaking of Universal horror... A military re-release of this classic monster mash? Twenty years ago, I would have turned my nose up at this---now I am dang thrilled to have it. Whoo hoo!

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0nNmsMY0XS0/YUgAmDkMSdI/AAAAAAAA3tE/xISt_AWPfms0qR4jHuTBWayo4N_0kgxQQCLcBGAsYHQ/w430-h640/Frankenstein%2BMeets%2Bthe%2BWolfman%2Bmilitary%2Brerelease%2Bb.jpg)

5: THE HORROR SHOW (International):
Wow! A collection of moviedom's best pre-80s horror icons on one poster! Too fab!

4:ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY (Half sheet):
Despite the size (I avoid half-sheets), this is a great score! It's got a voodoo zombie, skeletons, great verbiage, a wild title, and (Hello?) Bela Lugosi! YOWZA!

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhb-WG1BzQDjaV-zqBf4u-OJNIcWwtFR5socqjA_DYTymnODrcAGHIEr8PqF9-HN9Q05QbwqGpx0crhW_HoxSR_C7M5w-iP6dgQaiokH51W4MS8uAuj6q71Dh00SMP1ICjb9siYqFJVr_yKm_v8Fpw5jpBL_74694EthLDhS6mqESEIEWb1mtP4y1Eb=w640-h504)

3: THE CURIOUS DR. HUMPP (LA VENGANZA DEL SEXO) (Argentinean):
What's not to love about this wild, bizarre-O poster? Soooo wonderfully weird. LOVE IT!!

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F1jIHbwmldo/YG6fO9I_ZQI/AAAAAAAAuxo/8xtynFx-vRkGI-HxZl0NXdCZyLIbEADrACLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/THE%2BCURIOUS%2BDR%2BHUMPP%2BArgentinian%2Bbbbbb.jpg)

2: EXORCISM (LE NOTTI DI SATANA) (Italian 2F):
Stunningly spooky and sinister art for this mostly pedestrian EXORCIST knockoff. Oh, I dig the movie--but the poster art is far better than the film deserves. Just---WOW!

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CAYPRXgLNfM/YFLJrxK9qYI/AAAAAAAAta8/EK6zlfsvMQQIUF1UEcrZFbdfHLLAwPq2gCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/0111%2Bitalian_1p_exorcism_EB10747_B%2B%2Bbbbb.jpg)

1: RETURN OF THE FLY:
While the original movie is better than the sequel, RETURN OF THE FLY's poster is far superior than the original's one sheet. Yowza! And, yep! This is it. My favorite acquisition of the year. Whoo hoo! (Just BARELY beating out LE NOTTI DI SATANA/EXORCISM.)

Great post, I love that Italian "Frog", and "Hotel Reserve" is quite lovely.  Oddly enough, I also purchased "Cry of the Werewolf" (a pretty cool poster for a rather minor title) this year.  I will take a look at what I bought in 2021 and will post my favorites too.

Lovely posters, MAGG! Exorcism and Queen of Blood are my favourites - beautiful art.

I'll have to try and get round to taking some photos of a few that I got this year so I can contribute.

ANTOINE1973: Oh my stars! YOU got a CRY OF THE WEREWOLF poster as well this past year? That's crazy. I had NEVER seen one before (or heard of the flick) until i got mine. YES--find your stuff and post your faves from this year!

TOB: I'm glad you like some of the posters. Yes, please take some photos and share your favorite purchases. i'd (and everyone else) would love to see them.

REDMAN: Wow! That IS a jewel. Polish posters can be so odd--in a cool way--trying to figure out what movie they are for. But yours---I knew EXACTLY what it was before spotting the "Walta Disneya" blurb. That is a beauty. CONGRATULATIONS!

THIERRY:  I'm glad you like what has been posted so far, but... you are usually all over this. Post your favorites. Let's see 'em!  :)

Wow, I was looking back through my purchases and I bought way more than I remembered this year!
...And I keep telling myself I'll stop or slow down.  faint2.gif
Anyway I think I had a good year as 2021 brought me two true treasures that I thought I would never find...one didn't seem to exist at all and the other eluded me for years after I mistakenly passed on the only other one I saw a few years back.

The Vals (1983)
I know I posted about this one back in September, but every time I look at it I still can't believe it's real and that I have it. It's the truest treasure in all of my collection as I just love the movie so much.
(https://i.postimg.cc/30X81RmL/valsonesheet.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/30X81RmL)

Tuff Turf (1985) Video Release
Here's another one of my favorite 80s movies - one of the first I ever watched from that decade. The reason I love this poster specifically is because it features my favorite character from the film who isn't on any of the other posters. This was also used as the cover for the original home media releases.
This is the one I didn't claim when I had the chance years ago - and I always regretted it. I searched every day for another copy. During the wait, I picked up many other posters for this film - theatrical and foreign video releases - but they just couldn't match this one.
I don't have it in my hands yet so here's a photo from eBay, but I'm very excited for it. It's rolled - which is nice- but there is slight damage to the top left. Shouldn't be too much of a problem when it's framed though! I'm just so happy to finally have it!

(https://i.postimg.cc/KKCmyL5q/tuffturf.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/KKCmyL5q)

There were a few other great purchases but I don't have photos of them on me at the moment.
Here's to hoping 2022 will be just as good as 2021! ;D

Malcles' La Belle et la Bęte is a work of art.  One of the best posters ever made in my opinion.
I love Soubie's War of the Worlds.
I need to find the Barbarella quad.

Tough one, 2021, as I suppose it's been for most collectors.  There hasn't been a lot out there.

I bought 750 posters but couldn't find 20 haha.  So 10 it is.  The 10 that mean the most to me (for sentimental value or otherwise) in no specific order.

Jeepers! I was so excited about this post, I completely forgot to comment on it. I had NEVER heard of THE VALS before---so that instantly went on my watch-for list (I am also searching for an affordable DVD version). TUFF TURF I remember coming out--but never saw. Your post put it back on my radar...and also on my watch-for list. (And i did spy an affordable version on Amazon. Ha!) THANKS for posting. CHEERS!

Thanks dude, MUCH appreciated.  That Alien has been on my front page for months (that says a lot on how slow it's been).  Super cheap... like $120 or something.

I didn't list a bunch (US Dr. No or Lifeboat come to mind), but here is one I completely forgot about.  Not for everyone I get it, but I like it.

Goodness gravy!!!  It is just incredible to see so many great posters and several members posting!

Monster:  I think many of your favorites have that cool, great, in-your-face art that screams come into the theatre!!!  Yeah, that Frogs without frogs is awesome! Do I see Thomas Hart Benton influence in part of the Inner Sanctum? You did darn well collecting and even moved!

Redman: Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo!  Such a beautiful Cinderella poster you have.

Heather Mason: I don't remember Tuff Turf at all! Who's your favorite character? Thanks for posting it.  I really liked Kim Richards all those years ago in the Witch Mountain movies. It's really nice to hear The Vals meets one of your poster collecting dreams!  I'm curious what the girl standing up in the car is holding high up in her right hand?

Antoine:  So many great ones!  How do you do it?!  I'm still pretty partial to your Black Sunday, Devil Doll, Jungle Woman, and La Belle et la Bete style A. What a 2021 you had!

T: 750 in 2021!!!!  Hail to the chief!  Wow, what a big finish to your year with Forbidden Planet, Dial M, and GWTW.  That Bardot made my heart jump. My wife and I watched Holiday Affair recently and enjoyed how relationships were portrayed at that time Leigh/Mitchum style, though the price for that toy train was shocking. Beautiful Anna Karina art and nice to see again you went big on The Shining! One more thing: Rita...

I'll post my favorites, too.  Okie

okiehawker: She's holding a shopping bag for a store called "Judy's". I've never heard of the store before but I wasn't around in the '80s so it might've been popular in malls back then? Funny enough, on one foreign release of the film she is instead holding onto the "V" for the film's title while in another foreign released she is completely replaced by the Statue Of Liberty! Definitely wish they had posters for those!
As for Tuff Turf, my favorite character is "Ronnie", portrayed by Olivia Barash. I just love her outfit/hair in the poster as it just screams '80s and she is not on any other poster!

Monster_A_GoGo: The Vals is definitely one that has been forgotten to time. I believe it was just overshadowed by the other Valley Girl film at the time which was simply titled "Valley Girl". Funny enough, that one had the working title of "Vals" while this one had the working title of "Valley Girls". If you are looking for the DVD, I highly recommend you avoid the double feature DVD that is available right now. I bought a copy of it myself because I love the movie that much, but the quality was AWFUL. It was a blurred, pixelated mess...like they just ripped it off of YouTube or something. If you are able to track down the original Canadian DVD, it is a much better picture quality. I've seen it as low as $20 so you might get lucky. If not, it is available for free on YouTube. It's a bit lesser quality than the Canadian DVD, but still better than the double feature DVD.
Tuff Turf is definitely much more affordable and more widely available - I hope you enjoy it if you decide to pick it up!

There are some great posters here, I'm glad you've all been able to pick up some stuff you enjoy!

Wow! That is very cool. Not for everyone? Who cares. YOU like it. That's all that matters. CHEERS!

You're absolutely right.  A long long time ago, I used to post a lot of my new gear.  I soon realized that no one really cares, so I drastically trimmed it down to only a few posts a year.  I basically now only post the stuff that is important to me and I believe belongs in a poster forum.  Food for thoughts, if you will.  I know I'll probably be the only one to care, but I also get that we're all different and care about different things.  You and the horror stuff, for example.  I don't know what 90% of the stuff you post is, but I enjoy it a lot and try to let you know whenever I can.

Truly wonderful items, one and all! There has NEVER been more great stuff being sold over a short period of time in this hobby as this past year. It is surely the greatest time to be a collector ever.

Congratulations!

Wow, there’s some fantastic art collected here. Cheers for posting guys. Truly eye opening for a relative noob. I’ve been inspired to move up in size from my locandinas and Belgians in the last few months after joining this forum… so thanks for that  ;)

Kovacs01:  Wow! NICE stuff. I think I have that BEASTMASTER--which I totally dig-- and thought I had AMAZONS...but NOPE! So color me envious of that beauty. WOW! Those are rare, too. You NEVER see them.

Heather_Mason_SH3 Thanks for the info. That double feature with THE VALS...I saw that, but avoided, realizing it was a Frolic Pictures release. (I've purchased several from them---such crappy quality. They MUST be bootlegs, right?)

T: I hear you about posting. I do it now as a record for myself (on my own blog. I just recopy it here to share if anyone is interested.) as, unlike you, I did not start a spreadsheet and if it weren't for the posts, I'd never remember what I have and don't have. But thanks for contributing to the end of the year Best of thing. Your stuff is always top-notch!

BruceH: I wondered if Okie's DRACULA and WOLF MAN had come from your auctions. I guess I know the answer now. Thank YOU for continuing to have such amazing auctions.

Starling: You've always had such nice things to share in the past. Any hope of adding anything to this year's list?

Pelham: Welcome to the board and to the hobby. Even though you are a self-described "noob," we'd still love to see some of your locandias and Belgians. What are some of your favorites from the past year? Share them if you can/would like. Really--we would all like to see them. We were all "noobs" at one time. CHEERS!

Thank you Monster, Bruce, Starling, and Pelham!

Monster: Watch for bat delivery and the full moon out there on the island! Oops, I also should have counted the number of fairies on that Polish poster, eh?!

Bruce: I'll always be indebted to you for the sewer pipe solution! I'm still surprised it fit in my minivan.

Starling: I'll be sure to post a Bordertown hanging picture! I'm with Monster on betting you have something to show for 2021, too!

Pelham: Those Belgians sure had some pretty art on their posters.  Many, many gems.

Kovacs: Do you know who is the artist on The Beast of War?

Heather Mason: Thanks for the answers.  I'm wondering if Judy's was a West Coast store?  I don't recall them in middle America where I lived then. In our malls, we did have the original version of Orange Julius and Hot Dog on a Stick (which I just learned started in Santa Monica, CA).

Okie

Thanks for all the kind words everyone! This year, I was able to add some quality paper to my Dietrich/von Sternberg collection:

Started the year off right with this lobby. Love that lascivious look in Dietrich's eyes. NO ONE does erotic boredom like Dietrich:
(https://i.postimg.cc/rzc3BX4p/lc-blonde-venus-a-CS02896-B.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/rzc3BX4p)

I have had this window card title FIVE TIMES over the last decade if you can believe it. Each time, I upgraded the condition slightly. This is the best condition of the five I've owned, and I got it for the least amount of money by far, go figure.
(https://i.postimg.cc/PpLJhp9m/image.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/PpLJhp9m)

I didn't even know this jumbo lc existed! But as soon as I saw it I knew I needed to have it. Morocco is truly von Sternberg's love letter to Dietrich. Later films get more harshly jaded and visually abstract...and dare I say, exciting?
(https://i.postimg.cc/Mn89Q1Yp/lc-jumbo-morocco-WC31740-B.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Mn89Q1Yp)

More languid sexiness. Shanghai Express:

Last pick up of the year (well...we will see how the emovie auction shakes out haha). This Crawford still is from 1932!! And yet so modern it could be in a recent issue of Vogue. Incredible. A rare instance of Clarence Bull out Hurrell-ing Hurrell :):
