Title: November 2021
Post by: crowzilla on November 02, 2021, 07:42:46 PM
I guess  finally get to start one of these threads.
Not how many unrestored copies of this are left out there, but this is one of them.

Very nice, Crow!  The 1939 Style D art is really cool.  Was this art used for later releases as well?  Nice to see. Okie

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Dracula (R1951) and Wolf Man (R1948) one sheets in nice condition, unbacked and unrestored in Bruce's Halloween auction.  I should have bought them many years ago, though isn't that a story we all share?! Here they are via Bruce's images. Now comes the great poster shuffle to see where they will be framed and hanging up!!!  Best wishes to everyone, Okie

Thanks for the nice words all (and Redman bite your tongue, this poster should never be backed).

Okie, great pickups and for a very good price, was surprised they didn't end higher but they will look great on your walls.
And no, that Style D art wasn't used for any other release.

All of this stuff is so amazing, it makes it hard to follow up with something more affordable to all.  So I will try.  Got this B1 for John Carpenter's The Fog a couple months ago but never posted it bc it's on my website.

I still think it's a great poster, so don't crucify me.

Yeah, I'm a 5 minutes walk to the beach and it's been so foggy the past week.  I don't really leave my little coastal town, but I did today, and 10 minutes inland and you get warmth and sunshine.  So you're not wrong.

It's 10pm, I'm all alone downstairs and I think I hear noise outside.

Heeeeelp!!!

I have purchased quite a few posters since my last post, but I've been doing a terrible job at keeping my purchase archive updated and sharing on here.
One that I feel I must share though is - I got my very first linenbacked poster. It's the original Thierry hates "French Grande" for Marilyn Monroe's 1954 film "River Of No Return". It's my favorite movie by Marilyn so I just had to get a poster for it. Unfortunately the original US releases are out of my price range for now (not planning on spending $500+ on ANY poster right now) but I managed to get this one at quite a steal compared to what it's going for.
It's beautifully restored - you really can't see any flaws unless you're looking very closely for those original fold lines.
I have to say though...that I'm not really a fan of linenbacking now that I've got my hands on one. I guess I feel it kind of...takes away from the original poster in a way? I mean, to me, it doesn't feel like it's truly an "original" anymore.
Other than that I am very excited about eventually getting it framed and displayed.
It's the oldest poster I own for now. I'm keeping my eye out for posters of some of my favorite classic films - some of which are surprisingly affordable. I probably won't start actively buying again for some time though.

Loving that The Fog poster of T’s.
Here’s a couple of Locandinas I’ve picked up recently to boost my ever growing collection of smaller sized posters. Particularly enjoying Burton’s pissed off expression for Villain :)  The Logan’s Run one… it may be a bit yellowed around one edge but I was simply drawn in by that design work.

On my end, a couple of posters, including this Dial M for my Hitchcock collection.  It's linenbacked, which is unfortunate, but I've always loved this Martinati design, so I'm willing to make a transgression.

Fantastic artwork and I make an exception for linen-backed two and four foglios because it's a lot easier to display these larger posters. The only drawback with this one is the image - my wife wouldn't allow me to put it up if I was lucky enough to own it.

Hahaha that's exactly what my wife said ;)  I don't get it.  I was actually - a rarity for me - hoping to put it in the frame, but she said absolutely not.

Great Kiss of Death, Chris.  I own the French version of that title which I absolutely love.   notworthy.gif

Snagged these 2 in the auction on Saturday. Gone with the Wind was my grandparents first date in London right before my grandpa entered combat in ww2. He was from New York and happened to meet my grandma by chance. This movie sparked their life together. After 76 years of marriage my grandfather passed away on November 11th. We laid him to rest in military fashion on November 19th, the day before the HA auction. I delivered his eulogy and was able to land a few Gone with the Wind puns as I told his epic life store.

I won the “picture frame” version for what I thought was a good price. I like the “dancing scene” one even more and I was shocked if sold for as little as if did, so I picked it up as well! And it’s unrestored. I will likely frame the “dancing scene” and keep the other one stored properly. A few months ago I knew I was going to bid on one as it’s a very sentimental film for me.

Sorry for the long story. I’m happy to have a small community of people who like this stuff and get it.

I recently picked up these GWTW lobbies. They are trimmed, but only the blank border. It is pretty incredible to own something from when the movie was released initially.

That’s awesome! I actually saw these on eBay and passed due to the trimming. The price was pretty fair if I remember correctly! I really just wanted to throw down on the heritage auction. I sold off a good bit of what I had to compete.

I agree, it’s awesome to think of these things being displayed in late 1939 in a theater!

Thank you!

I read an interview somewhere that basically said something to the effect of “Gone with the Wind has its historical issues, but the bigger problem is that it’s just a very good movie”.

Couldn't agree more.  I'm about to buy a large French poster for the title, probably the only poster of its kind left from the original release.  It was re-released in France in 1954 but my poster predates that.  Still arguing the price but will post when/if I get it.

I also own this double panel French poster of the Atlanta scene signed Roger Soubie and not the "D'Apres Roger Soubie" restrike, like the one HA just sold.  "D'Apres" means that it is the original design, but not the same colors, thus not what the designer originally intended.  I don't want to clutter this thread with posters I've owned for years, so you can see it on my website.

Antoine: Very nice choices!  I was so very tempted on the Lost Planet six sheet and watched it for many days.  I'm so glad you got it!

T: Fantastic Martinati art on your Dial M!  Am I missing something as it would look great framed on the wall.  What worries the Mrs.?  And, Lifeboat is a classic image.

Kovacs: Nice condition Thai Beast Master!

Riley540: Man, those are two very nice posters for GWTW!  Thanks for sharing your family story, too.

Starling: Forty bucks a card for original GWTW lcs?!  Even trimmmed, that is a great price!  Nice going.

Riley, thank you for sharing that lovely story about how your grandparents met, and sorry to hear about your grandfather's passing.

Thanks Okie, it's a fun poster indeed!  I also have the one-sheet, with a different image in a similarly pulpy style.

I only got a couple of pieces from Heritage (which I will post once I get them), as I already own most of the sci-fi, horror and fantasy titles that they were offering this time.  Also, the few posters that I didn't already have were all linenbacked, which I'm always very reluctant to get unless a folded copy is really hard to find, or if it's a very large size that would be easier to frame that way (say a US 6-sheet or an Italian 4F).

T: Fantastic Martinati art on your Dial M!  Am I missing something as it would look great framed on the wall.  What worries the Mrs.?  And, Lifeboat is a classic image.

Okie

Well, you know that in general, I have no desire to display anything.  I'm down to one poster up on my walls (still the French Laura) and I don't think a woman being strangled and reaching out for help is appropriate for 3 kids)

You tell me ;)

Ah, now I get it, T. Point taken.  I've had wild posters up when the kids were young, though I don't think we had strangling either.

Watch that fog!  Okie

Chris: Yeah, that Kiss of Death is a great image and the black and white art is perfect!  Okie.

Pelham: Logan's Run is one of my favorite movies from that time.  Congratulations!

Answering T's call to post HA wins: I just couldn't resist this World Without End 24 sheet. I don't know that I'll be making 24 sheets a habit, though this one and The Dawn Patrol 24 sheet from Bruce's I talked about in August surprised me a bit.  Big and beautiful!  I'm looking forward to opportunities to display them.  I made a frame out of PVC pipe that sets up and takes down very easily to hang 24 sheets.  Here's also a photo of me in October with the Dawn Patrol hung up on the PVC frame.  Best, Okie

Hahaha that picture is funny.  You standing on that ladder is awesome.  It made me smile.

Also, thanks for posting.  I wish more people would post their HA acquisitions.

Amazing, Okie!  I was very tempted to bid on that World Without End 24-sheet at Heritage, but the sheer size made me think twice, as I'm not sure I would ever get a chance to display it on my walls (one needs a lot of wall space for this beauty!).

It's a really great poster, the Reynold Brown art is top notch, and I love that this copy is not linenbacked (although this would make it more difficult to hang).  I'm glad you got this one, it's a real treasure, please post another photo once you receive it!

Thanks, Starling, T, Hicks, and Antoine!

Starling:  My goal is to keep displaying these large posters.  If you have the opportunity to travel next year, I'll keep you posted on when the posters will be up.

T: Yeah, I'm sure glad the hotel had that big ladder!

Hicks: You sure are right.  When movie posters get to be around 9 feet x 20 feet, I think their mass does cause more gravitational attraction to the viewers!

Antoine: I'm glad I wasn't bidding against you!  I think to make a  poster this large practical to display, it will have to be backed in some way. I'd hate for it to just sit in a box folded up.  The Dawn Patrol is on one big piece of linen, which works well for displaying, though does require a six inch PVC pipe that is 10 feet long for storage and at least two people to hang it. I'm going to think on it a bit on options for backing and displaying. For instance, strong magnets might work with backing the poster in smaller sections. I'm very open to hearing ideas as well.

Best wishes everyone, Okie

This World without End poster is superb… And just gigantic  :o !

I bid on a lot of posters on HA the november.21, and a lot of failures ... Only 3 posters, low priority for me. I will show them if I ever receive them ...

But, I don't know if I will continue to bid on HA because they never answer my emails (bid@ha.com, credit@ha.com ...), especially when I make an international transfer, that the money disappears from my bank account (no answer, of course). I receive much faster their reminder of payment by email (and that annoys me when I send them all the proof and receive no response) and their little cards by mail to thank my bids (even if I'm in France)

It's sad because they have beautiful things, but it's too annoying and stressful to never get an answer (perhaps because my English is so bad)

Yeah, those 24 sheets are great...I love that photo of Dawn Patrol, it's so massive!

I've not seen 'World Without End', but the poster has sold it to me (as has the description on IMDB). I'll have to give it a try...

Thanks, AnthonyFR and Tob!

AnthonyFR: I'm Looking forward to seeing what you won as well.

Tob: I think you'll find things to enjoy when watching World Without End.    I agree, the poster image is sure doing its job to entice us to the movie  theatre!!!
