Title: Favorite Purchases of 2019
Post by: Monster_A_GoGo on December 04, 2019, 04:12:48 PM
Every year, there is an end-of-the-year post about favorite purchases throughout the year. Thierry started it back in the day, but over the last few years I sort of commandeered it and took over. With 2019 coming to  close, I thought I'd get a jump on this year's post. (I'm done buying/posting for this year, anyway). Here, in reverse order, are my Top 10 favorite poster purchases for the year.

10) SHE FREAK:

This was a tough call. It almost went to the poster for the Ray Milland/Rosey Grier schlock epic THE THING WITH TWO HEADS or the cheesy bargain basement 50's thriller THE KILLER SHREWS or maybe even the FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN British Quad. Phew! But this colorful grindhouse classic won its place on the list because the movie is so fun in all of the wrong ways.

9) HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER:

The unofficial third part of the I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF and I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN series (as actors portraying both monsters are in this!). Wild artwork. That knife in the eyeball...Zowie!

8) INVISIBLE MAN'S REVENGE (3-sheet):

Although I also picked up the 3-sheet for THE INVISIBLE AGENT (which came out before this flick), I was a bit more excited about this one. I wish it was NOT a three-sheet though. Oh well.

7) GHOST SHIP:

I almost got this a few years back....but it slipped through my fingers. I can't believe my luck in getting this copy. Finally. This has been on my radar for the last few years, so of course it makes the Top 10 list this year. Whoo hoo!

6) THE MONSTER WALKS (3-sheet 1938 re-release):

Although this is a 3-sheet (and I really have no love for 3-sheets) and only a re-release (the original is supposed to be impossible to find) and the movie is supposed to be utter crap (I haven't seen it), I still dig the old school vibe for this poster. 1938, baby! More than 80 years ago. Zowie!

5) I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN:

How long have I been wanting a poster for one of the I WAS A TEENAGE... films? Virtually all of my life, ever since I was a kid and watched them on TV on Saturday afternoons.  How excited am I to have this finally? VERY! I look at it EVERY DAY as I walk down my hallway. I have it hanging in my living room right in line with the hall just so I can see it. WOW!!

4) I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF:

Several weeks after scoring I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN, I could not believe my luck when i scored I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF as well. While I like the art on FRANKENSTEIN better, this one always seemed the one that would be hardest to get (which proved to be true) and I believe this one came first in the series...so it edges out TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN by a hair on this list (but just barely).

3) THE BLOB:

Zowie! This is a late-year addition. I have been after one of these for years. I remember when they would only go for a bit over $100 ---and were yet always just out of my grasp! Years later this cost me 10x as much. CRAP-O-RAMA!  But at least I have one now...

2) THE UNDEAD:

Holy guacamole! I have been wanting this poster uber-badly since first laying eyes on it many moons ago. I know nothing about the movie but the art is phenomenal. I can't believe it is mine. WOW!!!

1) THE MOLE PEOPLE:

Several years ago, I was the 2nd place bidder for one of these. I had spent far too much money during one particular auction and when I was outbid on this, I just had to let it go. Try as I might over the years to get another, I was always thwarted...until this year. Happy days! This puppy proudly hangs in my living room. Wow! Wow! WOW!!!

That's it for me this year. How was your year? Did you score anything good? I'd love to know. Post 'em here.

CHEERS!

Great stuff!

I love the SHE FREAK poster and have it myself, but can I just say I missed my one chance to see a 35mm screening of the movie - because I had to take producer/director David F. Friedman out to dinner instead! Memory of a lifetime.  notworthy.gif

I haven't seen any of the movies listed above (except for I Was a Teenage Werewolf, which was produced by a friend I long considered my mentor.)  And since I only collect posters of movies I have seen, I will probably never own any of them.  BUT I certainly do enjoy seeing your collectin, Monster_A_GoGo.  It's always a privilege, and these posters are all great.

I'm still looking at a few things before the end of the year, and will see if I have anything to show in a couple of weeks.  I can't think of anything at the moment.

Unfortunately I don't think I bought a single poster this year.

I did however give a talk about Swedish movie posters at the Cine-Excess conference in Birmingham, UK!

Out of interest, what's the connection to Sweden and their posters?

Cine.Excess is an academic conference and film festival on exploitation and cult film:
http://www.cine-excess.co.uk

Here's the abstract for my presentation:

Sex, Saunas and Suicides: Seeing Sweden through the Lens of Exploitation Film

For international cinemagoers, the word “Sweden” was once synonymous with risqué, taboo- breaking movies, and in the 1970s, terms such as “Swedish nymphets” and “Swedish housewives” were used as a draw on cinema posters for films starring actresses like Christina Lindberg and Marie Liljedahl. But the “Swedish” stamp went way beyond actual Swedish exports. Any blonde actress, such as France’s Brigitte Lahaie, could be advertised as “Swedish” in continental productions. Many films were given Swedish-tinged names, for instance Ray Austin’s Virgin Witch which was retitled The Black Mass of the Swedish Virgins in Italy. There was even an outfit in Japan producing “Swedish Porno” (Sueden Poruno) solely for the domestic market, using flown-in actresses and brief location shoots in Stockholm. But where did this start? The roots can be traced to two key films. First, Ingmar Bergman’s The Summer with Monika (1953), which was bought for the US market by exploitation king Kroger Babb and re-titled Monika, the Story of a Bad Girl. Babb devised a head-spinningly hyperbolic advertising campaign, including slogans such “No man could ever hope to satisfy her lust for love” and “The Devil Controls her by Radar”. Second, Luigi Scattini’s Sweden, Heaven and Hell (1968) which became a massive international hit, with its depictions of skinny-dipping blondes, saunas, swinger parties, drug-addicts, and the world’s (supposedly) highest suicide rate. These two films, along with other exports such as I am Curious Yellow, served to create and solidify the image of Sweden for the next decades. This highly visual talk will showcase items from the author’s personal collection of worldwide Sweden-themed exploitation film posters from countries including USA, UK, Italy, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, and more. Together this will create a unique insight into how a country can be viewed through the lens of cinema advertisement, creating an impression that is surprising for, and often even at odds with, that of the country’s own inhabitants.

It was a very fun event and great to meet other aficionados and academics working with unusual cinema!

Okay, so I've been looking thru my stuff and I bought about 1,000 posters this year.  Hard to find favorites.

I've also made the decision that I wanted to complete my Star Wars collection, so I've been on a mini SW kick.  Completely futile, I know, but the search is what it's all about.

So here are my 10 favorite SW posters of the year, and my 10 favs of the rest (in no particular order, but Jaws 7 sheet is probably my fav of the lot).

For quite some time, I have been wanting  one of these Harvey Prever lenticulars for 1954's Phantom of the Rue Morgue.  I had two different ones in my hands during 2019 and here is the one that lives at my house now.  It's tough photographing these glass lenticulars, though they sure look amazing in person.  Okie

All things considered, I think this one could be my fav of the year.  I need to get a better picture, but if you look at it closely, it is almost a perfect replica of Amity's Beach and all the characters are there.  Roy Scheider is on the right.

Hi Antoine, I heard after Prever died someone tried to replicate his process using his negatives. However, the results were described as obviously very, very, inferior.  Have you ever seen one of the low quality attempts?  Okie

Okie, I have never seen any of the lesser quality ones.  The Prever lenticulars for Rue Morgue have a light bulb that sometimes has been lost over the years, does yours still has its original one?
Antoine, I would think those 1950s bulbs burned out or the elements broke long ago. Although, they were made a little tougher back then, eh? I've got a nice low temperature LED bulb that fits perfectly into the original socket. Okie

Nah, all those prints are super cheap as long as you don't buy them from the Ebay scavengers.

I PMed you a link, Paul.

I also really dig IT FOLLOWS (I also need one of those eventually) and the BEAUTY AND THER BEAST (Why does T hate that? Hmm...)

Some of these weren't new in 2019, but are favorites I acquired last year for my collection.

Very nice, Dr Bill. Thank you for adding them. They're pretty cool. I especially liked the CINEMA PARADISO and the REEFER MADNESS paper. Awesome. But all of it was eye catching.  thumbsup.gif

That Reefer Madness is great!  And certainly seems to have taken inspiration from the Frankenstein three sheet

Thanks. Cinema Paradiso is one of my favorite films - I just wish more paper from it was available. Still haven't found any lobby cards.

I was late to discover Tim Pittides and his Reefer Madness is my favorite. The other two of his in my post (wine & beer) are beautiful in person, but pictures of the foils just don't them justice.
